May 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  Hikes during the month of May will be split between the Red Rock Canyon Area and the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains (usually referred to as the Mount Charleston area).  Information regarding assembly locations and directions to those locations is immediately below.  Some of the Red Rock area hikes will have a secondary pickup location if they are south in Cottonwood Valley or on the west side of the escarpment.

Red Rock Canyon Area.  Our main assembly point for hikes in Red Rock Canyon, Cottonwood Valley, and the west side of the escarpment is at the Red Rock Casino on Charleston Boulevard just east of 215.  To access the meeting spot, turn into the casino property at the signalized intersection directly across from Canyon Pointe, turn right directly in front of the casino, and immediately turn right into the lot.  If traveling east on Charleston from 215 you can turn right at the first entrance and then make an immediate left.  We will be parking at the north end of the lot along Charleston Boulevard.  Whenever Red Rock area hikes start from Highway 160, there will be a secondary pickup point for south side participants.  That location is at the gas station at the intersection of Highways 159 and 160.  Generally, this will be a brief stop which will occur about twenty-five minutes after the departure from Red Rock Casino.  When hikes begin at or near the community of Blue Diamond, south side participants can drive directly to that location.

Mount Charleston Area.  For hikes north of Las Vegas in either the Mount Charleston area or in the Sheep Mountains the assembly point will be at the Santa Fe Station Casino.  This property has two parking garages, one on the north end of the casino close to Highway 95 and one on the southeast side closer to the intersection of Rancho and Lone Mountain Road.  We always use the third level of the southeast parking garage as our meeting location.  This garage can be accessed from Lone Mountain Road traveling in either direction at the entrance near the theater addition.  It can also be accessed from Rancho.  If traveling northbound on Rancho turn in at the signal and turn left to access the garage.  If traveling southbound on Rancho pass the signal and turn at the entrance that directly accesses the garage.  This second option is used if you are getting to Santa Fe using northbound Highway 95 and taking the Rancho exit.  Drive up to the third level and turn left - we will be meeting right there.

Times indicated for each hike are departure times and are strictly observed.  Usually the group will begin arriving as much as one-half hour prior to the scheduled departure time.

Please pay attention to the difficulty ratings for each hike offered and do not attempt hikes that are beyond your abilities.  New hikers without recent hiking experience MUST begin with the 8:30 AM Saturday hikes as these are the only ones that guarantee a fairly leisurely pace.  Strenuous Tuesday hikes are only open to qualified experienced hikers.  Be sure to wear appropriate clothing, footwear, and hats and bring sunscreen, water, electrolyte replacement fluids as needed, and food or snacks for each outing.

Questions regarding general information should be directed to Chris Dempsey at dempseylv@aol.com or by telephone at (702) 823-2355.  Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the listed coordinator.  Refer to the club roster for contact information.

Starting this month there will be a number of early hikes offered in the immediate Red Rock area on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  The exact destination and route for these hikes will be determined on the morning of each hike by the participants.  The general parameters are between 4 and 6 miles, no more than 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and a moderate rating.  These hikes will be listed on the schedule as "Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug."  One of the goals for these hikes is to be back at the vehicles by 9:30 to avoid as much of the heat of the day as possible.  For those who become regulars on these hikes, Doug will compile a list of names and e-mail addresses to send out occasional notifications of any short term schedule changes.

Thursday, May 1 - Little Zion.  Here is one of those classic bushwhack hikes that we haven't had on the schedule for some time.  This strenuous out-and-back trek starts from the end of a gravel Forest Service road in Lovell Canyon and follows a series of drainages up the back side of the escarpment to an overlook behind Spring Mountain Ranch.  An undulating trail then follows the edge of the upper ridges to an open area with spectacular sandstone slabs and features including an arch in the making.  Total distance is about 6 miles and elevation gain is around 1,400 feet.  High clearance vehicles are needed for the drive.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 7:30 AM departure.  There will be a quick stop at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 about 7:50 AM to pick up any south side participants.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, May 2 - First Creek.  Easy to moderate is the general description for this 4-mile out-and-back hike from the signed trailhead along Highway 159.  The first mile is very level and leads to a hidden waterfall in a grotto area that provides a sharp contrast to the desert setting forming the approach.  A set of trails then continues upstream along the creek and includes some choppy terrain and a bit of scrambling reaching a seasonal boulder waterfall near the entrance to First Creek Canyon.  The return to the vehicles will follow a snack break on the sandstone boulders.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, May 3 - Two Peaks and an Arch.  This is a 4-mile scramble in the northern section of the Calico Hills that visits the arch near Sandstone Quarry, the main Calico Tank, and Calico II Peak before backtracking down the upper portions of the western side of the sandstone hills.  After descending back onto the Calico Tanks Trail the group will climb on the east side of the trail along Mass Production Wall and stop at Red Cap in the northern section of the hills.  After a break the traditional ascent route will be used for the descent back to Sandstone Quarry.  This hike is rated strenuous due to the amount of scrambling and there is around 1,500 feet of elevation gain.  Meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Saturday, May 3 - Fossil Ridge.  Across the highway from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon is Blue Diamond Hill with its collection of ridges and canyons that beg to be explored.  The later hike for this Saturday that starts from the Cowboy Stables parking lot along Highway 159 will take a look at the first ridge to the south.  This 4-mile loop version of the hike is rated easy to moderate with some emphasis on the moderate as it gains about 700 feet climbing on the ridge above Echo Canyon with a return along the Bunny Trail.  Bring plenty of water as the temperatures in early May can start climbing early in the day.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator -John Stewart.

Sunday, May 4 - Raintree via Trail Canyon.  Our first hike of the year in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains will be an out-and-back trek starting at the trailhead for Trail Canyon and continuing east along North Loop Trail to the base of a 3,000 year old Bristlecone pine.  Total distance is 7.5 miles with elevation gain of 2,200 feet and the hike carries a strenuous rating.  As this is our first effort getting close to 10,000 feet above sea level the pace will probably be somewhat slower with more breaks.  Don't attempt this outing unless you are familiar with hiking where the air is thin.  The assembly point for the group will be on the 3rd level of the southeast parking garage at Santa Fe Station.  Departure for the hike will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, May 5 - Oak Creek.  This moderate 5 to 6-mile out-and-back hike along the creek and into the canyon of the same name is for the most part fairly level as elevation gain is only about 300 feet.  The first (and last) mile of the hike is across the desert floor from the gravel parking lot where the scenic drive exits back onto Highway 159.  As the group nears the creek and the escarpment to the west vegetation becomes much more luxuriant and scenery abounds.  There are six crossings of Oak Creek on this hike and the snack break will be taken on sandstone boulders in the drainage of the canyon.  Meet the other hikers at Red Rock Casino for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, May 6 - Mummy's Toe.  Tough is the best description one can come up with for this strenuous 7 to 8-mile out-and-back hike gaining about 2,600 feet of elevation.  The trek begins innocently enough heading up North Loop Trail from the eastern end and passing both Raintree and Mummy Springs getting to the drainage that leads to the top of the ridge.  Quite soon starting the climb from Mummy Springs the trail turns steep and loose, then disintegrates into a route along the ridge and a final steep assault through the rocks to the top of this distinctive peak.  Once off the trail the unmarked route is quite specific and the group will need to stick together.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM start.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Tuesday, May 6 - Lost Creek Waterfall.  The alternate outing for this Tuesday is a moderately strenuous partial loop hike of 5 miles that is situated in Red Rock Canyon.  The hike begins from the Ice Box parking lot, proceeds along Ice Box Trail a short distance, then turns north on SMYC Trail.  After a visit to the base of Lost Creek Waterfall the group will climb along a steep trail to reach a ledge that leads around back to the top of that same waterfall.  After a break and the following descent the group will probably visit a petroglyph wall and swing around on the eastern section of the Willow Springs Loop Trail to return on SMYC Trail.  The group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 7 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  The early morning summer hiking season in the Red Rock Canyon area kicks off today with a 4 to 5-mile outing that will attempt to beat the scorching heat associated with Las Vegas in the summer.  See the description for the series in the preamble to this schedule.  Pace will be moderate but not too quick and there will be a short break along the way.  The group will meet at Red Rock Casino prior to leaving for the hike.  Departure times in May will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Wednesday, May 7 - No Name/Bristlecone Loop.  For those interested in hiking in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains where it is cooler there will be an alternative this Wednesday.  The partial loop version of this moderately strenuous 5 or 6-mile hike will be done in a counter clockwise direction, meaning the short section of the Bonanza Trail involved on the hike will come before a descent on No Name Trail back to the Bristlecone Trail.  Total elevation gain is around 1,000 feet starting from the top end of Lee Canyon Road.  Participants on this hike will meet at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Richard Hansen.

Thursday, May 8 - Sandstone/White Rock Loop.  The first time the coordinator ever did this moderately strenuous 7-mile loop hike he was trudging along in about eight inches of snow in the top section.  That won't be the case today as we will probably all be sweating from the rising temperatures, so we need to get as much of the 1,500 foot climb out of the way as early as possible.  The route used starts at Sandstone Quarry and follows the Grand Circle Trail over to the White Rock Springs parking area, then climbs past Keystone Thrust toward La Madre Mountain and an eventual descent in a series of drainages.  The group will gather at Red Rock Casino for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, May 9 - Cottonwood Pass Loop.  Continuing our early morning hikes in the general Red Rock area will be this moderate 6-mile loop outing in South Cottonwood Valley.  The trek will start from the gravel parking area south of Highway 160 also used for Badger Pass, which occurs the following day.  It will follow a combination of dirt roads and trails toward Mount Potosi and loop past Cottonwood Pass on the Goodsprings Road before heading back to the vehicles on the Deadhorse Trail in Red Valley.  Early group departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM, there will be a quick stop at the gas station on Highways 159 and 160 at 6:25 AM, and participants will meet the coordinator at the gravel parking lot for a 6:45 AM start of hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, May 10 - Badger Pass.  The earlier hike of the day will be a moderate partial loop effort starting from the Late Night parking area along Highway 160 and heading past the low northern section of the Bird Spring Range to the destination.  After climbing to the pass from the ridge to the north the group will descend down the east side of the saddle for a return to the starting point.  Total distance for this hike is 7 miles.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino and the departure time will be 8:00 AM.  There will be a stopover at the gas station at the 159/160 highway junction about 8:25 AM to pick up south side participants.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, May 10 - Badger Pass.  This is not a typo - the leisurely group on this Saturday will be going to the same destination as the early group, just using the trail that starts from the gravel parking area indicated in the May 9 hike description.  This makes the total distance for the loop hike 3 miles and there is 700 feet of elevation gain.  Rating is easy to moderate.  The shorter version of the hike approaches the pass along the same ridge used in the longer hike, but makes its descent from the saddle on the west side down to Deadhorse Trail.  This group will also assemble at Red Rock Casino and will leave at 8:30 AM, with a quick stop at the gas station around 8:55 AM on the way to the hike.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, May 11 - Southern Calico Hills Scramble.  Although this strenuous scramble is only 4 miles in length it certainly seems much longer when it is finally finished.  With around 1,900 feet of gross elevation gain in the total package the hike will challenge strong club members.  Starting at Red Springs Picnic Area the route climbs to Angel Pass and on to the peak above.  From there it traverses toward the main Calico Tank and down to Calico II.  After following the canyon past Calico I the group will turn left and climb over the ridge, descending along the Grand Staircase.  Instead of meeting at Red Rock Casino participants should drive directly to Red Springs Picnic Area for a 7:30 AM start.  GPS coordinates for the meeting location are 36 degrees 08'49.18" N by 115 degrees 25'08.06" W.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, May 12 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Meet the rest of the group at Red Rock Casino for a 4 to 6-mile moderate hike in the Red Rock area to be determined at the meeting location.  Departure will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, May 13 - Mummy's Tummy.  Plan on about five hours or more for this very strenuous outing that climbs to the top of Mummy Mountain, at 11,542 feet the second highest official peak in the Spring Mountains.  Elevation gain is 3,900 feet and the total distance to be covered on this out-and-back hike is around 9 miles.  The opening segment is along Trail Canyon, which many people consider to be tough, but wait until you get to the scree field above North Loop Trail, where two steps forward also means one back.  Once on the ridge the going is still difficult and includes a Class 3 climb up a notch in the cliffs to the top.  Participants should meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Laszlo Heredy.

Tuesday, May 13 - White Rock Hills Loop.  The alternative to the tough climb of Mummy Mountain is a straightforward loop around the two cream colored sandstone peaks at the north end of Red Rock Canyon.  At 6.4 miles in length the trail hike climbs a net of 900 feet of elevation and is rated moderate.  The route for this effort will start at Willow Springs Picnic Area and proceed in a counter clockwise direction, going through the desert section first to minimize the heat of a typical May morning.  Assembly point is at Red Rock Casino from which the group will leave at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 14 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Meet the rest of the group at Red Rock Casino for a 4 to 6-mile moderate hike in the Red Rock area to be determined at the meeting location.  Departure will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, May 15 - Krafft Mountain Traverse.  Changing up the experience from the April 17 trek across the rose colored peak behind the community of Calico Basin, this strenuous 5-mile loop hike will cross the top of the mountain in a west to east direction.  Starting from Red Springs Picnic Area the group will head up Five Stop Hill and turn right for some serious boulder scrambling climbing to the top ridge.  After reaching the high point they will continue east and follow the tricky descent route to the lower portion of Gateway Canyon.  The trail walk back to the starting point through a world-class boulder field will seem quite tame in comparison.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Friday, May 16 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Here is a final chance for the week to join the early risers and accomplish a moderate hike of around 5 miles in the Red Rock Canyon area.  As with the other hikes in this series, it is intended to get people off the trails by mid-morning when the heat of the day starts to come on.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Saturday, May 17 - Fern Canyon & Beyond.  This moderately strenuous 4-mile hike has a bit of everything and will start at the Pine Creek trailhead along the scenic drive.  The group will hike across the desert, enter the North Fork of Pine Creek (locally referred to as Fern Canyon), and stroll past ponds with an abundance of ferns under a nice shade canopy of trees.  Some people may choose to stay in this spot while others continue up the canyon, doing some Class 3 scrambling over and around boulders to a trickling waterfall.  Elevation gain is around 500 feet.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, May 17 - Cowboy Horse Trails.  The last Saturday Red Rock area hike for the season will be a 3.5-mile hike in the desert across from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon.  Following the dirt paths normally used by trail riders from the Cowboy Horse Stables, the loop route winds through the valley north of Blue Diamond Hill and climbs to the top of a 500-foot hill for a break.  Except for this climb the terrain is quite level, so the leisurely paced hike should probably be rated easy to moderate.  Meet other participants at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, May 18 - Blue Diamond Ridges.  This moderate early morning hike will cover a distance up to 7 miles starting from the gravel parking lot at the Cowboy Stables located on Highway 159 a short distance beyond the entrance to Red Rock Canyon.  How much the group does will be determined by how much the temperature rises.  If it stays cool enough to get in the full hike it will include a visit to the Las Vegas Overlook on Blue Diamond Hill.  Participants should gather at Red Rock Casino, leaving at 6:15 AM for the stables.  The coordinator will meet them at the parking area for a 6:30 AM start of the hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Monday, May 19 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Begin the week with a moderate early morning trek in the vicinity of Red Rock.  The actual hike will be determined by the group at the assembly point.  Generally, these hikes cover a distance around 5 miles and get finished by 9:30 AM to take advantage of any cooler temperatures.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, May 20 - South Sister.  Tough Tuesdays in the Spring Mountains continue this week with an assault of an exposed peak on the north side of Lee Canyon.  This hike will start from the Lower Bristlecone trailhead and follow an old interpretive trail toward the top end of Old Mill Picnic Area.  From there the group will turn left into a steep canyon and access the ridge west of the peak.  The final part of the 1,800 foot climb will include a very steep trail and some exposed scrambling through a cliff and across a rocky top.  Rating for this 5-mile out-and-back hike is strenuous.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, May 20 - Stanley B/Fletcher Canyons.  The alternative hike this Tuesday is strenuous enough in its own right.  Starting from the parking area on Kyle Canyon Road across from the start of the Fletcher Canyon Trail, the group will follow a trail along the Kyle Canyon drainage for about a mile to access Stanley B.  Once past the Leroy Mine it turns into a scrambling route up a drainage to a ridge extending out from Cockscomb Peak.  The descent into Fletcher Canyon is tricky and there is lots of brush heading down the canyon toward the rabbit hole at Obstacle Rock.  There will be an 8:00 AM departure from Santa Fe Station for this hike.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 21 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Getting back to the starting point before the heat of the day sets in is one of the major goals of this early morning outing in the Red Rock area.  Come prepared to offer suggestions of where the hike should be, for the destination will be determined by the participants at the assembly point.  The general mileage range for these hikes is between 4 and 6 miles.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will occur at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, May 22 - Echo Canyon & Skull Canyon.  A bit later start may mean rising temperatures, so bring extra water for this moderately strenuous 7-mile loop hike from the Cowboy Stables parking lot just off Highway 159.  The route will climb through Echo Canyon, follow some of the established trails on the plateau above the northern canyons of Blue Diamond Hill, then descend through Skull Canyon to the valley.  The hike has a small amount of scrambling and the pace will be set faster than normal due to the impending heat.  Those who wish to carpool from Red Rock Casino should leave there at 7:15 AM to join the coordinator at the trailhead .  The hike will start promptly at 7:30 AM from the Cowboy Stables.  GPS coordinates for this meeting spot is 36 degrees 07'17.02" N by 115 degrees 26'01.22" W.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, May 23 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Join the other early morning risers for a moderate trek in the area of Red Rock Canyon.  The actual destination will be determined at Red Rock Casino where the group will assemble.  Normal parameters are between 4 and 6 miles which should allow the group to finish under three hours.  Departure will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Friday, May 23 - Grand Staircase & Guardian Angel Loop.  Starting from Red Springs Picnic Area the group will climb Grand Staircase at the south end of the Calico Hills and descend on the back side to a wash below the Calico I turnout.  Heading north, they will navigate an inward scrambling route to the wash below Calico II, then pass the angel carving on the way to the saddle in the Calico Hills, descending straight back to the Calico Basin side of the sandstone hills.  This 4-mile loop hike is rated strenuous with 90% scrambling off-trail and a total elevation gain of 1,500 feet.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, May 24 - Telephone Canyon.  Our coordinators have joined forces to offer two hikes starting at the same time from the same location.  Kay will be taking the more adventurous route from Robbers' Roost, crossing the upper section of Telephone Canyon and heading uphill to a horse trough and on to a ridge with unencumbered views of Angel Peak.  This loop route is about 4 or 5 miles in length, has some steep sections of trail, and is rated moderate.  Chris will be taking the other group on a point-to-point hike from Robbers' Roost to a pullout along Kyle Canyon Road that is essentially downhill the entire way.  This hike is 4 miles in length and is rated easy to moderate.  Ideally, we will be able to get all the participants to the start of the hike and have enough vehicles at the end of the point-o-point hike to avoid car shuttling.  Hikers will assemble at Santa Fe Station and pick their hike, departing at 8:30 AM.  Coordinators - Kay Blackwell and Chris Dempsey.

Sunday, May 25 - Sawmill Wiggle Route.  This hike will take the Sawmill Trail to the next level!  Adding to the original hike along the higher ridge, the trail turns off to the left and begins switch-backing down to a forest road utilizing part of the large network of equestrian trails.  The group will cross Lee Canyon Road (Highway 156) and drop down into lower Lee Canyon, hike up the wide wash passing a narrow slot in the rocks, and cross back over the highway to the trailhead.  Expect a reasonably fast pace for this moderately strenuous outing that will cover a distance of 6 miles with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet.  Meet at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Tuesday, May 27 - Cockscomb Peak.  After a day off for Memorial Day our tough Tuesday crowd will be itching for a challenge.  They will get one on this strenuous 6-mile hike in Kyle Canyon.  The start of the hike will be at the Trail Canyon trailhead and will follow a Class 1 trail for the first 2.5 miles.  At that point the outing becomes a scramble over Class 3 terrain with exposure en route to the summit.  There is lots of loose rock through these steep sections and some crumbling limestone that needs to be navigated with extreme care.  Vertical gain is around 2,000 feet.  The group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, May 27 - Avalanche Canyon.  Somewhat less intimidating on this Tuesday after Memorial Day is this 5-mile partial loop hike that visits a canyon decimated by a large avalanche back in 2005.  Since there are no official trails into the canyon, much of the debris consisting of downed trees and boulders still lies where the rush of snow pushed it that year.  This version of the trek winds up beneath the cave near Mary Jane Falls and follows the regular trail down through a series of switchbacks.  Gross elevation gain will be around 1,200 feet and a strenuous rating applies.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 28 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Participants for this early 4 to 6-mile outing in the Red Rock Canyon area can expect a moderate hike lasting something under three hours.  Doug may show up with a recommendation of a trail or the group may decide at the assembly point what the destination should be.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Wednesday, May 28 - Raintree via North Loop Trail.  One of our standard summer hikes is this moderately strenuous 6-mile out-and-back hike that follows North Loop Trail from its eastern trailhead off Deer Creek Road.  Elevation gain for the hike is 1,500 feet with half of that coming on the slope  covered by a dozen switchbacks above a mid-ridge meadows.  Come and find out what a 3,000 year old tree looks like and why we hike to it so often.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Richard Hansen.

Thursday, May 29 - Fletcher Peak.  The group will be doing the standard route to one of the peaks surrounding Kyle Canyon on this out-and-back hike of 7.5 miles.  The route is identical to the one of the previous day going to Raintree, except it cuts over an adjoining ridge about a quarter mile before getting to the old Bristlecone tree.  The faint and sporadic trail leading to the top provides some great views of the distant peaks in several directions.  Plan on meeting the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Thursday, May 29 - Lee Canyon Narrows.  This area of lower Lee Canyon is often referred to as Champion Canyon, but Champion is really only the name of the old gravel road running along the bottom of the canyon.  This largely out-and-back hike will follow sections of the road and also include a bypass of a narrow twenty foot slot in a cliff that has given rise to the name of the hike.  Distance will be about 5 miles and there is 700 feet of elevation change involved.  The hike itself will start at the north end of Highway 158 near the junction with Lee Canyon Road.  The meeting location is at Santa Fe Station and the departure time is 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Gail Surgent.

Friday, May 30 - Blue Diamond Canyon #1.  Avoiding the heat of the day will be one of the main objectives for this short hike into the first canyon on the south end of Blue Diamond Hill.  It's not a long hike at around 3 miles but it does involve a considerable amount of scrambling, resulting in an overall rating of moderately strenuous.  There is a good chance of seeing owls in the canyon.  The return will most likely be along the ridge to the immediate north.  The main assembly point will be the gravel parking lot on the right side of the entrance road to the community of Blue Diamond just past the bridge.  Starting time for the hike will be at 6:00 AM so participants carpooling from Red Rock Casino will have to leave there about twenty minutes before that.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Friday, May 30 - Ash Meadows.  Here is a chance to do an easy to moderate loop hike in the vicinity of Calico Basin on the east side of the Calico Hills.  The group will start off from Red Springs Picnic Area heading toward Five Stop Hill, but will only do the first section of climb from Ash Creek before turning left onto another trail.  This trail leads toward the mouth of Ash Canyon where a break will take place in a shaded area close to Ash Springs.  The return will be along the base of the sandstone hills.  Elevation gain is probably only a couple hundred feet and distance is around 3 or 4 miles.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, May 31 - Big Falls Overlook.  This strenuous out-and-back hike utilizes Trail Canyon to access North Loop Trail, then turns left heading toward Mount Charleston on North Loop Trail.  A broad ledge a couple thousand feet above the floor of Kyle Canyon provides a dramatic view of Big Falls and the folded strata that make up much of the south ridge leading to Charleston.  There has been an interpretive sign at this spot and it might still be there.  Total distance of the hike is around 8 miles.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, May 31 - Fletcher Canyon.  This moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike into a side canyon draining much of the southern end of Mummy Mountain is one of the classics.  Much of the route is on established trail with about a third of a mile each way in a very picturesque slot canyon that narrows down to less than five foot width toward the turn around point.  The terminal end where the snack break will occur is at Obstacle Rock.  If interested in this typical Saturday jaunt meet the group at Santa Fe Station with a departure time of 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Diane Dempsey.

April 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  Almost all of the April hikes will be conducted in the Red Rock Canyon area, with information on the meeting location directly below.  Meeting locations and directions for hikes away from Red Rock will be included in the descriptions for those hikes.

If traveling east on Charleston from 215, you can turn right at the first entrance and then make an immediate left.  We will be parking at the north end of the lot along Charleston Boulevard.  Whenever Red Rock area hikes start from Highway 160, there will be a secondary pickup point for south side participants.  That location is at the gas station at the intersection of Highways 159 and 160.  Generally, this will be a brief stop which will occur about twenty minutes after the departure from Red Rock Casino.

Tuesday, April 1 - Bridge Mountain.  The month begins with a very strenuous trek to the exposed peak near the top of Ice Box Canyon.  The plan is for high clearance vehicles to drive up Rocky Gap Road as far as possible to minimize the distance covered by the out-and-back hike to between 6 and 9 miles.  Vertical gain should be close to 2,000 feet.  There will be plenty of Class 3 scrambling as well as exposure to long drops on this hike.  As a result, potential hikers must RSVP to Steve Anderson at banderson54@cox.net at least two days in advance.  Those that are deemed capable of doing the hike will be given information regarding meeting time and location.  As the road requires 4-wheel drive vehicles, it will be necessary to determine if there are enough of those as well.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, April 1 - Gypsum Peak.  The alternative hike for the first day of April will be a moderately strenuous 4 to 5-mile out-and-back trek to the top of the peak south of the community of Blue Diamond and across the highway from the gypsum plant at the south end of Blue Diamond Hill.  The opening portion of the hike is on multi-purpose trail, connecting with the remains of an old gravel road that wraps around the mountain.  Reaching the top from the east side will involve a relatively short section of steep scramble.  This hike has open participation and those wanting to take part should be at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  South side participants can drive directly to Blue Diamond but must be at the bike shop parking lot by 8:15 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Wednesday, April 2 - Hamblin Mountain.  This Lake Mead hike will find the group heading for the narrow peak across Boulder Narrows from Fortification Hill that provides sensational views of multiple sections of the lake.  The strenuous out-and-back trek covers a total distance of 7 miles and gains around 1,500 feet of elevation.  The return leg of this hike includes a trip through a colorful canyon exiting from Pinto Valley.  The meeting location will be in the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy located on Lake Mead Boulevard and Hollywood with a 7:30 AM departure time.  There will also be a secondary stop at Mile Marker 4 of Northshore Road on the way to the trailhead for south side participants.  There will not be an early west side assembly point.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Thursday, April 3 - Gorman Little Grand Canyon & Beyond.  This is a fairly low elevation hike located in a canyon somewhat west of Bishop Gorman High School.  It is also at least partly exploratory as we will be investigating a trail toward the top of the canyon that we came across on our last jaunt to the area, although it appears to head toward the top of the ridge line dominating these hills.  It is hard to say what terrain we might encounter along the way, but bring enough water and fluids to allow for a hike of close to 10 miles.  Because of the distance we should probably rate this hike as moderately strenuous.  Meet the other participants at Red Rock Casino for a 7:15 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, April 4 - Bird Spring Range.  A moderately strenuous hike of about 6 miles with 1,500 feet of elevation gain will start from the dirt parking area about one-half mile south of Highway 160 also used for the shorter Badger Pass hike.  Starting in a northerly direction, the route goes around the north end of a ridge and meets the Badger Pass Trail.  Near this junction the group will begin a cross-country route east up a ridge that connects with the main north-south spine of the small range.  The return will be down to Badger Pass on the way back to the vehicles.  The early assembly point will be at Red Rock Casino for a 7:00 AM departure, heading for the gas station at the intersection of Highways 159 and 160 to meet the coordinator and other south side participants.  The full group will leave there for the hike at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, April 5 - The Muffins & Skull Canyon.  Visiting the large conglomerate boulders known as the Muffins on the north end of Blue Diamond Hill is only the first destination on this moderate 6-mile loop hike with 1,100 feet of gain.  After getting the initial great view of Las Vegas the group will continue south along the eastern ridge of the hill and stop for a snack break at the old Las Vegas Overlook site.  The return leg descends on the trail through Skull Canyon, dropping to the valley floor and the series of horse trails used on the opening segment.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Dennis Rohne.

Saturday, April 5 - Peak 3488 Ridges.  Our club welcomes yet another new coordinator to the fold for a moderate 3 or 4 mile hike through the desert area close to Calico Basin.  The destination is a small peak whose name is derived from the elevation at the top of the hill and shows up as a blip on the contour maps with an elevation change of about 400 feet.  Pace for the hike will be leisurely to accommodate those who like to enjoy the scenery and take an occasional picture.  This group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Vern Quever.

Sunday, April 6 - Landmine Loop.  The name of this trail comes from the mountain bikers who frequent the area south of Red Rock Canyon known as Cottonwood Valley.  This moderate 8-mile loop hike starts inside the community of Blue Diamond and circles around the long ridge on the trails generally referred to as the Blue Diamond Bike Trails.  Total elevation gain is around 900 feet.  A reasonably good pace will be maintained to get the hikers back to the starting point before temperatures increase too much.  The group will depart at 7:30 AM from Red Rock Casino.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, April 7 - Waterfall Canyon.  Although this 4 to 5-mile out-and-back hike is probably rated moderate overall because 80% of it is along Rocky Gap Road, the remaining portion in the canyon includes sketchy trail, portions of slick rock, and a few Class 3 climbs around waterfalls ranging as high as thirty feet.  Since the canyon is deep spring fed, it usually has water coursing down the channel even during dry seasons, and the route crosses the creek on several occasions.  Assembly for this hike will be at Red Rock Casino with an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, April 8 - White Rock Hills Peak.  The out-and-back trek to the top of the higher of the two peaks in the White Rock Hills is only 4 miles in length but has over 2,000 feet of elevation gain.  Starting from Willow Springs the group will head to the northwest side of the mountain for a climb through a very steep canyon and a ridge accessing the top.  The route is very brushy and there is a lot of Class 3 scrambling and some serious exposure.  The hike is rated as very strenuous and should only be attempted by the most advanced hikers in the club.  The group will meet at Red Rock Casino for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, April 8 - White Rock Hills Loop.  Here is another alternative hike to the regular Tough Tuesday outing.  Participants in this group will be circling the White Rock Hills from Willow Springs Picnic Area and may get a glimpse of the first group heading toward the top of the higher of the two peaks.  This moderate hike is 6.4 miles in length and gains 900 feet getting to the snack break on a rock outcropping below White Rock Springs Peak.  Participants for this hike should gather in the customary spot at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Richard Hansen.

Wednesday, April 9 - Red Springs Loop.  In keeping with the short but tough hikes this week the 4-mile loop starting at Red Springs Picnic Area also has quite a bit of scrambling and is rated moderately strenuous.  The route climbs up to a notch in the Calico Hills and descends past the somewhat famous angel carving getting to the Red Rock side of the sandstone hills.  This section requires use of hands in several places.  Scrambling continues in the deep canyon between the hills and the scenic drive but near the end turns back to trail as it passes an area of petroglyphs and a balanced rock.  The assembled group will leave from Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Thursday, April 10 - Black Velvet Canyon.  Much of the route on this moderately strenuous 8-mile loop hike involves multi-purpose trails in Cottonwood Valley that roll along fairly level terrain with the hiccups generally being drainage crossings.  The half mile trail getting into the canyon and the quarter mile of intense boulder scrambling in the canyon is where the real difficulty lies.  Use of hands will be required at several spots and we will stop for a break inside the canyon below a 30-foot dry waterfall.  Departure time from Red Rock will be at 7:30 AM.  There will be a secondary pickup at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 twenty-five minutes later to pick up south side participants.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Friday, April 11 - Seven Pools of Gray Fox Canyon.  While you may have heard of the Seven Pools of Hana on the island of Maui you might not know about our very own version here in Las Vegas.  Gray Fox Canyon is located north of the community of Calico Basin and east of the Red Cap area, so the trailhead used to start the hike is one of those customarily used for the Krafft Mountain Loop.  Distance for the hike is about 4 miles and there is 1,200 feet of elevation gain along with a short but challenging section of scrambling and minor exposure.  Rating for the hike is strenuous.  The group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, April 12 - Red Cap.  This version of the hike to the red mantle at the north end of the Calico Hills will not be the regular route out of Sandstone Quarry.  Instead it will start at Red Springs Picnic Area and climb through Ash or Dragon Canyon past the Ash Canyon Overlook and attack the peak from the east side.  This out-and-back route is about 5 miles in length and has 1,500 feet of elevation gain.  With some serious scrambling involved and some exposure, the hike carries a strenuous rating.  Those participating should be at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, April 12 - Secret Garden.  Join our coordinator for a trip to a hidden spot that she considers her secret garden.  The moderate 4-mile hike begins at Willow Springs parking area and follows an early section of the White Rock Hills Trail.  The group will break at the halfway point before turning around and heading back to Willow Springs.  Pace for this hike will be leisurely.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Marg Biesiada.

Sunday, April 13 - Blue Diamond Knoll.  This 6-mile moderate loop hike begins in the community of Blue Diamond.  The group will make their way up the Tertiary ridge behind the community following a trail along the top that leads toward Bonnie Springs.  After dropping back to the valley floor near the western end of the ridge the route loops to the north and returns to Blue Diamond.  Red Rock Casino will be used for the early meeting point, with a departure at 7:35 AM, and those participants should proceed to Blue Diamond.  After crossing the bridge on the main entrance to the community there will be a dirt parking lot on the right side just before the first houses.  The coordinator will be at that location.  South side participants can drive directly to Blue Diamond if they wish.  The hike will begin at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Monday, April 14 - Cave Canyon & Las Vegas Overlook.  There is some pretty serious scrambling in the lower part of the namesake canyon on this 6 to 7-mile loop hike on Blue Diamond Hill.  Starting from the Cowboy Stables parking lot the group will head into the canyon where one of the first obstacles is a 15-foot dry waterfall that can be climbed without use of rope.  After scrambling around some fairly sizeable boulders the terrain becomes easier to negotiate.  The group will exit the canyon on a trail that leads past the communications tower and on to the overlook.  Descent will likely be through Skull Canyon.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Tuesday, April 15 - Callville Ridge Loop.  It's appropriate that our last Lake Mead hike of the season should be coordinated by our resident Lake Mead experts.  The route for this hike on the north side of Boulder Basin will pass the remains of an airplane crash near a ridge top, hike along the ridge, and loop back through a canyon that includes scrambling.  There is the possibility of coming across desert tortoises and there should certainly be some beavertail cacti in bloom.  The hike is 5 to 6 miles in length and is rated moderately strenuous.  Because of potential heat be sure to bring plenty of water.  The group will assemble at the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy on Lake Mead Boulevard and Hollywood for an 8:00 AM departure.  They will stop at the pullout at Mile Marker 4 on Northshore Road to join the coordinators and any other south side participants around 8:15 AM before proceeding to the trailhead.  Coordinators - Joan & Chuck Hawkins.

Wednesday, April 16 - Keystone Thrust Loop.  This moderate 4-mile hike will provide an opportunity for the average hiker to see up close the effect of a massive Pacific Plate movement some sixty million years ago that forced older limestone rock from the west on top of younger sandstone already in the area.  The hike will start from the gravel pullout at Mile Marker 6 on the scenic drive in Red Rock Canyon, passing the gravel parking lot near White Rock Springs and continuing on the Keystone Thrust Trail.  Instead of returning by the same route the group will continue down through the sandstone canyon to the scenic drive and return along the road to the vehicles.  The group will leave from Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM for this hike.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Thursday, April 17 - Krafft Mountain Traverse.  The intended route for this strenuous 5-mile loop hike is a bit different in that it will not include a climb up Five Stop Hill.  Instead it will pass the south side of the mountain and climb to the peak using the east approach.  Once across the top and the descent to the saddle between Krafft and Gateway Peaks, the group will head down to Lower Gateway Canyon and follow that route back to the east side of the mountain.  There will be plenty of scrambling through a multitude of areas on this hike.  Meet the other group members at Red Rock Casino for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Friday, April 18 - Red Cap & Calico Tank Peak.  This intense scrambling effort will start at Sandstone Quarry, go past the turn-off leading to Calico Tanks, and climb to Red Cap via a Class 3 route with some mild exposure.  The group will the descend past Mass Production Wall, climb to the top of Calico Tank Peak, and return to the Calico Tanks Trail to get back to Sandstone Quarry.  The hike is quite strenuous and has significant scrambling even though the distance is only about 3.5 miles.  Total elevation gain is around 1,700 feet.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, April 19 - Krafft Mountain Loop.  This moderately strenuous 5-mile hike is similar to the one the previous Thursday but it does not include the traverse across the top of the mountain.  The route for this loop hike will follow the trail up Five Stop Hill, descend into Lower Gateway Canyon for a trip around the mountain, then pass through a well-known boulder field on the south side of the mountain for a return to the starting point.  The bulk of this trek probably does not live up to the overall rating but there is some tricky boulder scrambling in the canyon that generates the rating.  Meet the other group participants at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM start to Red Springs.  Coordinator - Dennis Rohne.

Saturday, April 19 - Corn Creek Visitor Center Trails.  If you haven't yet checked out the new visitor center at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge today's leisurely outing will provide you with the opportunity.  The trails from the center wind through ponds and luxurious foliage that takes advantage of the water flowing through the upper sections of the Las Vegas Wash.  Distance hiked will probably top out around 2 miles but it is quite level and carries an easy rating.  There is a long gravel road leading from Highway 95 to the visitor center but it is well graded and should only provide a sheen of dust to the vehicles.  Since this hike is north of Las Vegas we will be using our gathering point for Mount Charleston area hikes.  That location is in the southeast parking garage at Santa Fe Station on the 3rd level.  Participants can access this garage from Lone Mountain Road or from the main entrance to the casino off Rancho.  Look for the group along the south wall on the 3rd level.  DO NOT TRY TO FIND THE GROUP IN THE NORTH PARKING GARAGE.  Departure time will be at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, April 20 - Blue Diamond Cactus Garden.  This 6-mile loop hike is situated on the knoll behind the community of Blue Diamond.  It has an exploratory section because the route includes the possibility of a trail leading down from the sandstone outcropping just north of the high point on the knoll.  The start of the hike is at the dirt parking lot near Wheeler Camp Springs and sections of the Blue Diamond Bike Trails will be involved.  There are several red barrel cacti in the vicinity of the high point on the hike.  The pace will be reasonably quick and the rating is moderately strenuous.  Assembly point will be Red Rock Casino with a 7:30 AM departure time.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, April 21 - SMYC & Dale's Trail.  This moderate out-and-back hike is about 7 miles in total distance.  It will start at the Lost Creek parking lot on the spur road heading toward Willow Springs and take SMYC Trail south, crossing the Ice Box Trail and continuing south on Dale's Trail.  At the junction with the Pine Creek Trail the group will turn right and take a snack break by the old Wilson homestead foundation before returning.  If interested meet the rest of the group at Red Rock Casino for a departure at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, April 22 - White Rock Loop & White Rock Springs Peak.  Starting from Willow Springs the group will head in a clockwise direction around the two cream colored mountains that constitute the White Rock Hills.  On reaching the north side of the second peak they will begin a steep scramble involving Class 3 terrain to the top of the peak.  The descent will be on the east face and will include more Class 3 scrambling.  The 8-mile hike is rated strenuous and has about 2,500 feet of overall elevation gain.  The group assembling at Red Rock Casino will leave there at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Wednesday, April 23 - White Rock Hills Loop.  Here is the tame version of the previous day's hike, meaning it doesn't include scrambling to the top of anything.  The total distance of this moderate loop hike is 6.4 miles and the elevation gain is 900 feet and it is all on trail.  One of the distinctive features of this hike is that it provides an opportunity to see the stark difference between the desert setting on the south side of the mountains and the luxuriant growth on the north side.  Perhaps the fact that the back side generally gets twice the rainfall is significant.  Departure from the assembly point at Red Rock Casino will occur at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Thursday, April 24 - Gass Peak.  Looking down on the city from its north side is the Las Vegas Range and the highest point in that range is a mountain housing air control radar and several large solar panels known as Gass Peak.  To get to the starting point of the strenuous 7-mile out-and-back hike will require driving on a series of gravel roads that seem to worsen the farther one gets from the highway.  High clearance vehicles are definitely in order.  Overall, the elevation gain is probably around 1,800 feet and the view from the top is exceptional.  The meeting point for this hike is at Santa Fe Station.  See directions in the description of the Corn Creek hike on April 19.  Departure time will be at 7:30 AM. Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Friday, April 25 - Sandstone, Gateway & Five Stop.  This moderate 5 to 6-mile out-and-back hike will start at Sandstone Quarry and head east past the north end of the Calico Hills.  After reaching the area behind the Ash Canyon Overlook, it will proceed down a side canyon and turn right into the middle section of Gateway Canyon.  After a short stretch of minor bushwhacking the route will turn right on the trail that leads to the saddle above Five Stop Hill where the snack break will occur before returning to the start.  The group will leave from the gathering spot at Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Saturday, April 26 - Hikes & Spring Picnic at Lone Mountain.  Our club's spring picnic is scheduled for the last Saturday of April at the Lone Mountain Regional Park by the intersection of Craig and Jensen.  While the food is scheduled to be served at noon we hope to provide some shorter hikes in the vicinity of Lone Mountain starting at 8:00 AM.  Three potential hikes are an easy 2-mile loop  around the mountain, a moderate 3-mile hike up the mountain using the north or west trails, and a strenuous scrambling effort coming in from the south.  Currently we are looking for coordinators for each of these hikes.  If you are willing to volunteer, please contact Ann Hoskin at agreensprings@gmail.com.  The gathering spot for the hikes is at the south end of the park on Jensen between Craig and Alexander.  Parking is available there or you may park at the main lot off Craig and walk over to the starting point.  There is a separate flyer attached to the newsletter which details what you need to know to attend the picnic, which is being coordinated by Ann Hoskin and Edwina Labrecque.

Sunday, April 27 - Brownstone Canyon.  For this strenuous out-and-back hike the group will be starting from the gravel lot at the north end of Calico Basin.  The route will climb Five Stop Hill, drop into Gateway Canyon, and proceed up the canyon to its top end.  Once on top of the sandstone behind Turtlehead Peak the route zigzags past several boulders and outcroppings seeking a narrow crevice that is used for the descent to the pictograph wall in Brownstone.  The hike contains quite a bit of scrambling and some exposure.  Total distance should be around 8 miles.  The group will meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, April 28 - La Madre Miner's Cabin.  The total distance for this moderately strenuous hike is 5 miles and the elevation gain is 1,600 feet.  The La Madre Springs trail is used for the bulk of the hike starting from Willow Springs Picnic Area.  Once past the pool behind the old dam the route changes from abandoned gravel road to single track trail that generally gets steeper as it climbs along a small stream.  The payoff is an old shelter located on a ledge that presumably was used by the person who dug several shafts on higher ground above the shelter.  Meeting spot is Red Rock Casino with an 8:00 AM departure time.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, April 29 - Two North Peaks.  It seems like every year at the end of April and again at the end of November we do a hike that features at least one of the North Peaks so why break tradition.  The strenuous 12-mile partial loop hike will start from Willow Springs and head up Rocky Gap Road to Red Rock Summit.  From there the trail leads to limestone North Peak situated across the top of Ice Box Canyon from Bridge Mountain.  The route continues across the peak and along a ridge connecting to sandstone North Peak.  The steep regular trail will be used to return to the road and back to Willow Springs.  Gross elevation gain is around 3,000 feet.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for a 7:15 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Wednesday, April 30 - Potato Knoll.  The month of April ends with a moderate 5-mile jaunt up the hill directly in front of Wilson Peak on the escarpment in Red Rock.  Overall elevation gain for this partial loop hike is 500 feet with over half of that in the short climb to the summit.  The hike will begin at the gravel parking lot on Highway 159 at the end of the scenic drive.  The route also crosses Oak Creek on four occasions, so there is the possibility of seeing running water.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

March 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read the entire section thoroughly before skipping to the actual hike descriptions, as they will not include directions.

The March hike schedule includes mostly hikes in the Red Rock Canyon area with several hikes, especially during the first half of the month, in the Lake Mead area.  See the information directly below for directions to assembly locations for those hikes.  When scheduled hikes are not specifically within those areas, directions to the meeting sites will be included in the hike descriptions.

Red Rock Canyon Area.  Our main assembly point for hikes in Red Rock, Cottonwood Valley, and the escarpment west of these places is at the Red Rock Casino on Charleston Boulevard just east of 215.  To access the meeting spot, turn into the casino property at the signalized intersection directly across from Canyon Pointe, turn right directly in front of the casino, and immediately turn right into the lot.

Lake Mead South.  For most hikes on the south side of the lake the general meeting spot will be at the Henderson Fiesta Casino.  At this location, we will be meeting close to the large outdoor sign in front of the property.  Henderson Fiesta is located on Lake Mead Parkway just east of the junction of I-215 and I-515.  Lake Mead Parkway is actually the eastbound extension of I-215.  There will also be an earlier assembly point for these hikes at Red Rock Casino, with directions listed above, for those wishing to carpool from the west side, and there could be local stopping points after the group leaves Henderson Fiesta.  These stopping points will be listed in the appropriate hike descriptions.

Lake Mead North.  For hikes on the north side of the lake the early west side collection point will be on the top level of the parking garage at Rampart Casino rather than at Red Rock Casino.  Rampart Casino is located on Rampart Boulevard just south of Summerlin Parkway.  The garage is located on the northeast side of the casino and is four levels in height.  The best route from Rampart to the general meeting location is Summerlin Parkway to Highway 95 to I-15 north to eastbound Lake Mead Boulevard.  The general assembly point will be in the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Lake Mead Boulevard and Hollywood.  There will also be a secondary pickup point at Mile Marker 4 of Northshore Road inside the recreation area.

Valley of Fire and Gold Butte.  In March there is one Gold Butte hike on the schedule on Thursday, March 6.  For this hike the primary assembly point will be in the parking lot of Lucky Club Casino, which is located on the east side of I-15 at the Cheyenne Avenue exit and on the north side of Cheyenne.  Participants getting there from Northbound I-15 will have to cross several traffic lanes just after the exit ramp to make a left turn into the property.

IMPORTANT NOTE #1 - Hike coordinators may not always be at either the early or primary assembly points.  Participants will need to monitor the time and set up carpooling to the next meeting location or pickup point when that occurs.  Although most of these situations are referenced in the hike descriptions, others may occur that are not so noted.

IMPORTANT POINT #2 - When reading the descriptions, you will see references to both Lake Mead Boulevard and Lake Mead Parkway.  These are different streets.  Lake Mead Boulevard is an east-west street on the north side of Las Vegas that runs completely across the city.  Lake Mead Parkway is on the southeast side of the city and is an east-west street that starts at the junction of I-515 and I-215 and extends over to the lake.  Please do not mix these up and go to the wrong location.

Saturday, March 1 - La Madre Double Arch.  This strenuous 6-mile outing in the vicinity of Keystone Thrust will begin from the upper parking lot at Mile Marker 6 of the scenic drive that also serves White Rock Spring.  The group will proceed up the Keystone Thrust Trail until it drops into the upper wash, hike up to the fork, then turn right and ascend a steep wash to the double arch.  After a break they will return to the red sandstone above Keystone Thrust Canyon before returning to the starting point.  Meeting location is Red Rock Casino with an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, March 1 - Fossil Ridge.  Here is your basic easy to moderate 3-mile Fossil Ridge hike done in a clockwise direction.  From the Cowboy Stables parking lot the group will follow the entrance road to the main building and climb the trail onto the ridge immediately behind the building.  Once on the ridge, the group will follow the regular trail to the south along the top of Echo Canyon, stopping for a snack break near an outcropping of stacked composite boulders.  The return will be along the northwestern section of the loop often referred to as the "bunny trail."  This group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Dennis Rohne.

Sunday, March 2 - Rainbow Gardens.  By special request we will be doing an exploratory hike into the southern section of Rainbow Gardens through a broad wash toward a large red sandstone pointed monument.  The hike will start from Lake Mead Parkway just west of Lake Las Vegas and head in a northern direction.  Trail conditions are unknown and the estimated distance to be covered is up to 6 miles.  Long hiking pants are probably advisable as there could be lots of brush and irregular terrain.  Rating is probably moderate or moderately strenuous.  Early west side group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 7:20 AM and the fully assembled group will leave from Henderson Fiesta at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Monday, March 3 - North Wind Wash Loop.  This moderate 8-mile loop hike starts in a dry wash across the road from Black Mesa in the Lake Mead area.  It continues to an area of colorful rocks with sandstone marbles and oddly shaped formations.  On the return the route loops through an adjacent colorful wash with some loose footing.  West side participants should leave from Rampart Casino at 7:20 AM with the general meeting spot at the CVS Pharmacy on Lake Mead Boulevard and an 8:00 AM departure.  That group will meet up with the coordinators and any other south side participants at the Mile Marker 4 pullout along Northshore Road about 8:15 AM before proceeding to the trailhead.  Coordinators - Joan & Chuck Hawkins.

Monday, March 3 - Siena Ridge.  We usually only do this hike in late December but we are scheduling it again to see whether or not we can get an early sighting of the Desert Tortoise we encountered a year ago.  The out-and-back hike itself is 5 miles in length with under 1,000 feet of elevation gain and is rated moderate.  The starting point is the parking lot for the golf course in the community of Siena, so if anyone going knows where that is they can drive directly there.  Otherwise, we will be assembling at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, March 4 - West End Wash to Anniversary Narrows Loop.  Also known as the End Around hike, this strenuous trek starts at Mile Marker 13 on Northshore Road.  The route passes a nice, very large arch and climbs the side of a brilliant red dry waterfall before proceeding almost to the foothills of the Muddy Mountains.  It then goes over a saddle to an interesting canyon with dry waterfalls and other formations and descends into Lovell Wash just above Anniversary Narrows before returning to the vehicles.  Total distance is 10 to 12 miles and the pace will be fairly fast.  West side participants should carpool from Rampart Casino, leaving at 7:20 AM.  The general meeting location is the CVS Pharmacy on Lake Mead Boulevard with an 8:00 AM departure.  There will be a brief stop at Mile Marker 4 of Northshore Road to pick up the coordinators and any other south side participants about 8:15 AM before heading to the starting point.  Coordinators - Joan & Chuck Hawkins.

Tuesday, March 4 - Calico Tanks.  For those wanting a shorter hike we will be offering the scenic 3-mile out-and-back hike along the Calico Tanks Trail out of Sandstone Quarry in Red Rock.  This moderate hike climbs through a colorful canyon in the Calico Hills for a break on a ledge overlooking Ash Canyon and the community of Calico Basin with views extending across the southern half of Las Vegas as far as Lake Mead and some Arizona mountains.  If this hike suits your fancy you can meet the other participants at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, March 5 - Gorman Little Grand Canyon.  Utilizing a route though the low hills west of Bishop Gorman High School, this hike has a steep climb through a slot in a low set of cliffs and winds its way to the top of the canyon for views of Blue Diamond Hill and the wallboard processing plant near the community of Blue Diamond.  On the return we will be following a trail we happened upon on our last visit.  The loop hike is about 6 miles long, is rated moderate other than the aforementioned slot climb, and will be conducted in a counter clockwise direction.  Group departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Thursday, March 6 - Gold Butte Little Finland & Subway.  This strenuous 8.5-mile hike with 1,000 feet of elevation gain was rescheduled from February 2 because of a possible conflict with the Super Bowl.  The drive into Gold Butte includes 4 miles of graded dirt road followed by 4 miles of rough dirt road that requires high clearance vehicles.  The hike itself covers an area of Gold Butte highlighting the Little Finland rock formations, slot canyons filled with petroglyphs, and a boulder filled canyon with some fun climbing.  Exposed routes can be circumvented if necessary.  Plan on being gone the entire day on this outing.  West side group departure will be at 7:30 AM and full group departure from Lucky Club Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinators - John & Kay Blackwell.

Friday, March 7 - Mystery Woman Canyon.  This moderately strenuous loop hike will cover about 6 miles and includes some scrambling in the namesake canyon.  The route starts up Skull Canyon, branches off into Mystery Woman Canyon, and stops for a break at the new Las Vegas Overlook before returning past the communications tower on Blue Diamond Hill.  The finishing part of the hike is along the steep and loose Boneshaker Trail that leads back to the cowboy stables area.  If interested, meet the group at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Saturday, March 8 - Sandstone Canyon.  Get ready for some good boulder scrambling in the canyon behind Spring Mountain Ranch that penetrates the Wilson Cliffs on the west side of Red Rock Canyon.  This moderately strenuous out-and-back hike will cover a total distance of 5 miles and provide spectacular views of colorful sandstone cliffs where climbers may be present.  Overall elevation gain will approach 1,000 feet but most of that is during the boulder scrambling in the canyon.  This group will meet in the northeast corner at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  This location is in the lot just east of the main entry to the casino rather than our regular location in the parking lot.  Coordinator - Jon Lubinski.

Saturday, March 8 - Sandstone Quarry Loop.  Starting from Sandstone Quarry along the scenic drive in Red Rock, this 3-mile loop hike utilizes a section of the Grand Circle Trail heading toward the White Rock Hills and cuts over a low sandstone mound before reaching the back side of the Turtlehead Trail.  From there the group will head down to the Ash Canyon Overlook but will turn back toward the starting point on the north side of Red Cap.  There is some minimal rock scrambling involved, which results in a moderate rating for this hike.  The group will meet in the normal spot at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Ann Cronin.

Sunday, March 9 - White Owl Canyon.  The long version of the hike into the canyon on the shores of Lake Mead known for a pair of white owls will begin near the old Las Vegas Marina and follow the shore line of the lake to the canyon entrance.  After exiting the canyon on the west side, the route back includes some bushwhacking but eventually reaches an abandoned section of Lakeshore Drive that is now part of the long River Mountains Trail.  There are two choices for descending back to the lake, with one including some very intense boulder scrambling in another canyon with a bypass option that is generally pretty easy.  West side departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:15 AM with the full group leaving Henderson Fiesta at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, March 10 - Rainbow Canyon & Anniversary Narrows.  This moderate 8-mile loop in the Lake Mead area passes through colorful Rainbow Canyon and includes stops both in the narrows and at the abandoned area above Lovell Wash where the processing site used to be.  With spring approaching there is a chance of catching blooms on the local bearpaw poppies.  The route includes some uphill grades and a little scrambling.  Any participants from the west side should meet at the Rampart Casino parking garage for a carpool departure at 7:20 AM to join the main group at the CVS Pharmacy assembly point.  The entire group will leave at 8:00 AM and pick up the coordinators and other south side participants at the Mile Marker 4 pullout along Northshore Road at 8:15 AM.  Coordinators - Joan & Chuck Hawkins.

Monday, March 10 - Krafft Mountain Loop.  Back by popular demand is this extremely picturesque loop hike through Gateway Canyon on the north side of Krafft Mountain.  Starting from the Red Springs parking lot, the route follows the trail up Five Stop Hill before dropping into the canyon for some exciting scrambling.  After exiting the canyon the trail back leads past a boulder array that gets heavy use from the genre of free climbers who use only mats to cushion any falls from their sometimes upside down adventures.  Total distance is about 6 miles and the rating is moderately strenuous.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino and leave for the hike at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, March 11 - Hoover Dam Bridge Peak & Point.  Here is a new adventure for the intrepid group of "Tough Tuesday" hikers to challenge.  The most dramatic route is straight up the mountain from almost under the highway bridge near the start of the Gold Strike Hot Springs starting point.  To create a loop route the group will use Gold Strike Canyon to return to the vehicles.  Total distance is only about 4 miles but it is pretty intense, resulting in a very strenuous rating.  West side departure from Red Rock Casino is at 7:20 AM.  The full group will meet at the Henderson Fiesta and leave at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Laszlo Heredy.

Tuesday, March 11 - Echo Canyon & First Finger.  The alternative hike this Tuesday is a moderate 6-mile loop route that opens with some moderate scrambling up Echo Canyon and includes a few dry waterfalls in the six-foot height range.  Near the top of the canyon the group will turn left on a trail that leads to First Finger, then come back around at the edge of the mining area and descend along the Fossil Ridge Trail.  Enjoy the abundant views of the Wilson Cliffs from the open top of this ridge.  The assembled group will have an 8:00 AM departure from Red Rock Casino.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, March 12 - Frenchman Mountain.  This strenuous 4-mile out-and-back hike to the tall mountain on the east side of Las Vegas will involve several options.  The coordinator will lead a group up the steep gravel road accessed from Lake Mead Boulevard just over the saddle in the Sunrise Mountains.  Those wanting a different approach can use either the western route up the partial trail from the end of Bonanza Road, which includes significant scrambling and exposure, or head toward the canyon on the northwest side that includes a twenty foot crawl ledge.  West side departure from Rampart Casino will be at 7:30 AM.  The main group, including the coordinator, will be assembling at CVS Pharmacy on Lake Mead Boulevard for an 8:15 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Thursday, March 13 - Hollow Rock Peak.  The traditional out-and-back route to the top of the southern most sandstone peak in the Wilson Cliffs covers a total distance of 6 miles and gains slightly more than 1,000 feet.  The opening portion of the hike is on a fairly steep trail starting near Mountain Springs Summit.  After a mile of hiking the route branches toward the peak and soon becomes a significant scramble over sandstone ridges and through steep canyons.  This is a strenuous hike with some exposure at the peak.  The main group will meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure and there will be a secondary stop at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 about 8:20 AM to pick up south side participants.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Friday, March 14 - First Creek.  Generally rated easy to moderate, this 4-mile out-and-back hike passes a hidden grotto below a seasonal waterfall in the creek drainage.  After a short stop at the grotto the group will head toward the entrance to the canyon, reaching the break spot above a boulder waterfall that requires some moderate scrambling to reach,  Elevation gain is in the range of 400 to 500 feet.  Meet the other participants at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Saturday, March 15 - Windy Peak.  The out-and-back hike to the top of this red-capped sandstone peak in the southern portion of the Wilson Cliffs begins from a pullout on Highway 160 near Mountain Springs Summit.  Total distance is between 5 and 6 miles with 1,200 feet of gain.  Besides a section of steep trail there is some bushwhacking and also some scrambling around boulders near the top.  There is also some rolling exposure for about 50 feet just past the transition from a limestone ridge to the sandstone mound that comprises the peak.  This hike is rated strenuous.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM with a secondary pickup at the Highway 159 and 160 gas station twenty minutes later.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, March 15 - Fossil Ridge.  The route for this leisurely hike will be quite different from the route used on the March 1 offering of the same name.  This loop version will turn right immediately through the cowboy stables entrance and turn right again before reaching the brown composite boulders overlooking Echo Canyon.  Near the halfway point the route turns left and follows a trail above Echo Canyon back down the north end of Blue Diamond Hill.  Total distance for the moderate loop hike is 3.6 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lorraine Stalians.

Sunday, March 16 - Bowl of Fire Loop.  This strenuous 10-mile hike will actually require a short car shuttle as the start is at Mile Marker 20.5 along Northshore Road and the finish is at Mile Marker 18.  It starts by climbing a ridge and descending a steep slope that leads into a series of washes where the group will come across camel tracks in the sandstone.  At the north end of the Bowl of Fire they will encounter some fun scrambling in a colorful canyon that may feature some pools if there is any recent rain.  A half hour lunch break will occur somewhat more than halfway along the route.  West side participants should leave the Rampart Casino at 7:20 AM, join the main contingent at CVS Pharmacy on Lake Mead Boulevard for an 8:00 AM departure, then stop at Mile Marker 4 on Northshore Road to pick up the coordinator and any other south side participants.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Monday, March 17 - Calico Hills.  The out-and-back hike on the official trail between the Red Rock fee booth and Sandstone Quarry covers a distance of 6 miles and gains a net of 700 feet, although the rolling terrain adds several hundred more.  We will be parking behind the fee both and taking the signed trail to Calico I Overlook before dropping into the fault canyon between the hills and the scenic drive.  Along the way there will be a chance to view some ancient petroglyphs on a slab of rock between Calico II and the turn around point at Sandstone Quarry.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, March 18 - McCullough Hills Trail.  Be prepared for a long day of hiking on this strenuous 16-mile out-and-back hike south of Henderson.  The goal is to follow the trail end to end to end.  There is some elevation change along the way but the trail is generally in good shape.  West side participants will have a 7:15 AM departure from Red Rock Casino and will join the main group at the Walgreens Pharmacy on the corner of Eastern and Sunridge, with a departure for the new trailhead at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Richard Hansen.

Wednesday, March 19 - Horse Thief Canyon.  This 6-mile outing is actually two hikes in one.  The hike is accessed by driving up a gravel wash from the parking area also serving Arizona Hot Springs on a recreational road requiring high clearance vehicles.  The hike starts by passing an unclimbable dry waterfall and scrambling up a wash with mostly minor elevation gain.  Continuing up a scenic canyon the group will reach Horse Thief Falls for a break.  After returning to the starting point, the day continues with a short trek off the highway to a remarkable slot canyon.  Overall rating is probably moderately strenuous.  West side participants should leave Red Rock Casino by 7:40 AM and head for Henderson Fiesta, from which the consolidated group will leave at 8:20 AM and a final assembly will occur at the Arizona parking lot at 9:00 AM.  Coordinator - Keith Lane.

Thursday, March 20 - Mountain Spring Peak.  The namesake for this moderately strenuous 7-mile loop hike is a limestone peak sitting just above the top of the Wilson Cliffs somewhat behind Black Velvet Peak.  The most scenic spot, used for the break, is on a ledge high above the top section of Black Velvet Canyon.  These two locations are followed by a stretch of bushwhacking down a ridge to a gravel road leading back to the starting point.  The group will meet at Red Rock Casino for a departure at 7:40 AM and do a secondary stop about 8:00 AM at the 159-160 gas station to pick up any south side participants before heading to the trailhead.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, March 21 - Cottonwood Valley Loop.  A moderately strenuous hike of 6 miles with around 1,500 feet of elevation gain will start from the dirt parking area we also use for Badger Pass.  It starts on a trail but eventually leaves it for a cross-country route up a steep ridge to a higher ridge with views of Las Vegas.  From there the group will head south along the ridge and connect with the Deadhorse Trail passing through Red Valley back to the vehicles.  Early assembly will be at Red Rock Casino on the west side, with the group leaving at 7:30 AM.  Final assembly point will be the gas station at the intersection of Highways 159 and 160 with a departure time of 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, March 22 - Gray Cap Peak.  Although the approach used this Saturday is recognized as the easiest one to access the peak, it is still tough enough to garner a strenuous rating.  The out-and-back hike from Sandstone Quarry covers about 5 miles with about 1,600 feet of gross elevation gain.  After passing the north end of Red Cap, the group will head down a side canyon going east, turn left into Gateway Canyon, and start doing serious scrambling on sandstone at the top of that canyon.  The limestone cap on the peak is a reminder of the massive Pacific Plate movement eastward some sixty million years ago.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Saturday, March 22 - Firehouse Loop.  The easy to moderate option for the day will be a hike that starts off Moenkopi Road in the vicinity of the BLM fire station.  The easy to moderate loop will cover a distance just over 3 miles and will include an elevation gain of around 400 feet getting to the top of a hill for a partial view back toward Las Vegas.  Pace will be leisurely to accommodate all participants.  Meet the other cast members at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Ann Cronin.

Sunday, March 23 - Mystery Woman Canyon.  When we first did this hike a year ago we had no idea what to expect in this canyon that tops out near the communications tower on Blue Diamond Hill, so the title of the hike had to have the word "mystery" in it.  This outing will basically follow the route used on March 7 to access the top of the canyon and reach the Las Vegas Overlook, but will return to the starting point entering the top section of Skull Canyon, making this a moderately strenuous partial loop hike of about 6 miles with 1,200 feet of elevation gain.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, March 24 - Escarpment Base Trail.  Rarely does our club schedule a point-to-point hike that involves car shuttling, but this moderate 5.4-mile hike is so interesting we usually put it on the agenda several times a year.  Some vehicles will be left at the Lost Creek trailhead, where the group will finish, and the others will be driven to the starting point at the gravel Oak Creek parking area along the Red Rock scenic drive.  In between is the Arnight, Pine Creek, Dale's, and SMYC trails which will lead in a northerly direction along the Wilson Cliffs, also known as the escarpment.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, March 25 - Cave Canyon.  There is some pretty good scrambling in this canyon after negotiating a 15-foot dry waterfall, but it soon gives way to more gentler terrain as it reaches the top of the canyon.  In case the coordinator wants to enter one of the two large caves near the waterfall you should probably pack a flashlight of some kind.  For the outing today the group will complete the loop hike by making a final descent through Skull Canyon.  Estimated distance is about 5 or 6 miles, depending on the connection with Skull Canyon, and the rating is moderately strenuous.  Join the group at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, March 26 - Waterfall Canyon.  This spectacular point-to-point hike is only 4 miles in total distance but it usually has some amount of water flowing even during fairly dry seasons.  Most of the hike is conducted on Rocky Gap Road getting to the entrance to the canyon, but that one mile in the canyon is where the intensity picks up.  Most people can negotiate the moderately strenuous scrambling required to reach the base of a 30-foot waterfall and the more daring can climb to the top and follow the creek upstream for another short distance.  We will assemble at Red Rock Casino in the usual spot for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Thursday, March 27 - Above Lost Creek Waterfall.  Most of this 4 to 5-mile hike is along relatively easy trail but the climb through the cliffs near the Lost Creek waterfall and the subsequent scrambling over and around boulders above the cliffs elevate the overall rating to strenuous.  The partial loop hike will start at the Ice Box parking lot and follow the SMYC Trail to Lost Creek, continuing north on the Willow Springs Loop Trail accessing the approach to our destination.  On the return we will incorporate the rest of the Willow Springs Loop getting back to Lost Creek Trail and a return along SMYC.  Join the group at Red Rock Casino for a 7:45 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, March 28 - Ice Box Canyon.  Part of the route used for this hike will duplicate the one used the previous day, as it will start at the Lost Creek trailhead and follow the SMYC Trail to the approach into Ice Box Canyon.  After the trail ends by dropping into the drainage, the group will encounter a stretch of moderate boulder scrambling for about a half mile in either direction reaching a 30-foot seasonal waterfall deep in the canyon.  Total distance will be about 4 miles for this moderately strenuous out-and-back effort.  Red Rock Casino will be the meeting point for this hike and the assembled group will leave at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Saturday, March 29 - White Rock Hills Loop & Potluck Picnic.  The rating is moderate for this 6.4-mile loop around the two White Rock Peaks at the north end of Red Rock Canyon with an elevation gain of 900 feet, all on trail.  One of the more interesting factors about this hike is the striking difference between the desert vegetation on the south side of the mountains and the tree and shrub growth on the north side, where twice as much annual rainfall occurs.  Participants who are interested in a pot luck picnic after the hike should bring food items that do not require cooking to share with the group.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, March 29 - Ash Meadows.  Starting from Red Springs Picnic Area the group will follow a series of trails along the east side of the Calico Hills that will reach the base of Ash Canyon for a break.  Elevation gain is generally minimal but the trail rolls slightly in spots.  Ash Meadows itself has a healthy stand of ash trees fed by a spring and creek that flow from near the location of the break.  Pace will be leisurely, distance is a little over 3 miles, and the rating is easy to moderate.  This group will leave at 8:30 AM from Red Rock Casino.  Coordinator - Ann Cronin.

Sunday, March 30 - Blue Diamond Hill.  Our club does several hikes on the northern section of Blue Diamond Hill, but this outing will be quite different since it is a point-to-point hike requiring car shuttling.  The hike starts at the cowboy stables parking lot and heads toward the communications tower below the Las Vegas Overlook before passing the gypsum mine area and winding up at the community of Blue Diamond.  To make sure we have enough vehicles to carry all the participants from the finish back to the starting point, the group that assembles at Red Rock Casino will depart at 7:10 AM and drive to Blue Diamond, getting there by 7:30 AM.  South side participants can drive north on Highway 159 from Highway 160 to join the group.  Drivers should turn off Highway 159 onto the main entrance to the community, cross the bridge, and look for the dirt parking area on the right just before the first houses.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Monday, March 31 - Oak Creek/Knoll/Arnight Loop.  Rather than drive the scenic loop in Red Rock to access the trailhead, the gravel parking lot at the exit of the scenic drive onto the highway will be used as the start and finish of this moderate 6-mile loop hike.  Most of the approach to the Oak Creek trailhead follows horse trails but there could be some bushwhacking involved getting across the desert.  The middle portion of the hike is the normal set of trails that loop back to the gravel parking lot with the Oak Creek and Arnight trailheads.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.
