July 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  Hikes during the month of July will be split between the Red Rock Canyon area (early mornings on select Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) and the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains (usually referred to as the Mount Charleston area).  Information regarding assembly locations and directions to those locations is immediately below.

Red Rock Canyon Area.  Our assembly point for summer hikes in Red Rock Canyon, Cottonwood Valley, and the west side of the escarpment is at the Red Rock Casino on Charleston Boulevard just east of 215.  To access the meeting spot, turn into the casino property at the signalized intersection directly across from Canyon Pointe, turn right directly in front of the casino, and immediately turn right into the outdoor lot.  If traveling east on Charleston from 215 you can turn right at the first entrance and then make an immediate left into the lot.  We will be parking at the north end of the lot along Charleston Boulevard.

Mount Charleston Area.  For hikes north of Las Vegas in either the Mount Charleston area or in the Sheep Mountains the assembly point will be at the Santa Fe Station Casino.  This property has two parking garages, one on the north end of the casino close to Highway 95 and the Rancho exit and one on the southeast side closer to the intersection of Rancho and Lone Mountain Road.  We always use the third level of the southeast parking garage as our meeting location.  This garage can be accessed from Lone Mountain Road traveling in either direction at the entrance near the theater addition.  It can also be accessed from Rancho.  If traveling northbound on Rancho turn in at the casino entrance signalized intersection and turn left to access the garage.  If traveling southbound on Rancho pass the signal and turn at the entrance that directly accesses the garage.  This second option is used if you are getting to Santa Fe using northbound Highway 95 and taking the Rancho exit.  Drive up to the third level and turn left - we will be meeting right there.

Times indicated for each hike are departure times and are strictly observed.  Usually the group will begin arriving as much as one-half hour prior to the scheduled departure time.

Please pay attention to the difficulty ratings for each hike offered and do not attempt hikes that are beyond your abilities.  New hikers without recent hiking experience MUST begin with the 8:30 AM Saturday hikes as these are the only ones that guarantee a fairly leisurely pace.  Strenuous Tuesday hikes are only open to qualified experienced hikers.  Be sure to wear appropriate clothing, footwear, and hats and bring sunscreen, water, electrolyte replacement fluids as needed, and food or snacks for each outing.

Questions regarding general information should be directed to Chris Dempsey at dempseylv@aol.com or by telephone at (702) 823-2355.  Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the listed coordinator.  Refer to the club roster for contact information.

Tuesday, July 1 - Mount Charleston.  The very strenuous hike to the top of the highest mountain in southern Nevada will cover close to 17 miles and gain over 4,200 feet in elevation.  Trail Canyon Trail and the upper section of North Loop Trail will be used on this out-and-back hike.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 5:00 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, July 1 - Lee Peak Trail Junction.  The alternate hike this Tuesday is still quite strenuous as it will log in at about 12 miles with 3,300 feet of elevation gain and the west end of Lee Peak the destination.  This trek will follow the same route as the longer hike, so it is possible the two groups will meet up on the return segment.  Departure time will be 7:00 AM from Santa Fe Station.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Wednesday, July 2 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  The actual hike in the Red Rock area will be determined  as usual by the participants who show up at the designated spot at Red Rock Casino.  The general parameters are that the hike will be up to 4 or 5 miles total with a moderate rating and should be completed by mid-morning to reduce the heat impact.  Group departure will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Helmut DeCandia.

Thursday, July 3 - Raintree via Trail Canyon.  With the new trailhead located a bit farther down Echo Road, this moderately strenuous out-and-back hike is now just under 8 miles as it gains 2,200 feet of elevation getting to one of the oldest bristlecone pine trees in the Spring Mountains.  The group will be departing from Santa Fe Station at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, July 4 - Red Springs.  Most of the route for this moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike will be in the shade as the group will start from Red Springs and go around the south end of the Calico Hills as far as Calico II Overlook utilizing the canyon between the sandstone hills and the scenic drive as much as possible.  The coordinator will be at Red Springs Picnic Area for a 5:30 AM start of the hike.  If anyone plans to carpool from Red Rock Casino they should leave that assembly point at 5:15 AM.  If the gate of the picnic area is not open that early there is plenty of parking just outside along the road.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, July 5 - Wild Horse Canyon.  The leisurely hike of the week will be a 3 to 4-mile loop with 800 feet of elevation gain utilizing the eastern section of North Loop Trail to the mid-ridge meadows followed by a descent into the shaded canyon just to the north.  The route used is rated moderate and hiking sticks will be useful on the steep upper part of the namesake canyon.  Departure from the staging point at Santa Fe Station will be 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Sunday, July 6 - Cockscomb Ridge.  The standard route for this moderately strenuous out-and-back hike between 5 and 6 miles follows Trail Canyon Trail to the top at North Loop Trail followed by a less traveled but somewhat tricky trail going out along the ridge to the base of Cockscomb Peak.  The elevation gain of 1,700 feet mainly occurs on the Trail Canyon section.  Participants should assemble at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, July 7 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Our regular coordinator for these early morning Red Rock area hikes returns after a one-week break.  The normal guidelines for these lower elevation outings applies as the hike, to be determined at the gathering point by those in attendance, should be about 4 or 5 miles in length with a moderate rating.  Departure time from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Monday, July 7 - Sawmill Wiggle One Way.  This easy to moderate point-to-point hike in Lower Lee Canyon will start at the Sawmill Picnic Area along Highway 156 and cross the highway into the canyon.  After a gradual opening elevation gain of 200 feet the route along Champion Road will turn down the canyon to the spot where the shuttle vehicles have been dropped on the way to the starting point.  Distance is between 4 and 5 miles.  The group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, July 8 - Charleston Tree Line.  The stopping point for this very strenuous 14-mile out-and-back hike will be the start of the switchbacks on North Loop Trail past Devil's Thumb that is close to the actual tree line on the mountain.  This will keep the overall net elevation gain to about 3,400 feet and avoid the tough climb to the top.  The assembled group for this hike will leave from Santa Fe Station at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Tuesday, July 8 - Mack's Peak.  For the second Tuesday in a row there is an optional hike, but again it is not any less significant.  The distance for this very strenuous out-and-back hike is somewhat less than 5 miles but it is mostly over steep and loose terrain gaining over 2,000 feet with only sporadic trail.  The final assault to the peak includes a very steep ramp with an assortment of rocks sized from gravel to boulders followed by an exposed section above the cliff face to the peak.  The group departs at 7:00 AM from Santa Fe Station.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Wednesday, July 9 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Standard guidelines will apply as the hike should cover about 4 or 5 miles with a moderate rating and with the actual destination being determined at the assembly point by those in attendance.  The group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 6:00 AM and the hike will be concluded by midmorning. Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Wednesday, July 9 - Stanley B/Fletcher Canyons.  This higher elevation alternative involves some serious scrambling in the drainage of Stanley B Canyon past some lead mine shafts followed by a tricky descent into Fletcher Canyon that doesn't ease much until in drops through the rabbit hole at Obstacle Rock in Fletcher Canyon.  Overall, this loop hike will cover about 6 miles and is rated strenuous.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Thursday, July 10 - Bonanza Peak.  Although the distance for this strenuous out-and-back hike is 10 miles and the elevation gain is 2,600 feet, the Bonanza Trail the constitutes the majority of the hike doesn't have any lengthy steep sections and presents few problems.  The final section getting to the top of the peak is only sporadic trail but is actually quite level.  The drive to the trailhead from Cold Creek involves a couple of miles of nasty gravel road so high clearance vehicles are recommended.  The assembled group will leave from Santa Fe Station at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, July 11 - Fletcher Canyon.  Starting at an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level, this moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike gains about 600 additional feet getting to the break point below Obstacle Rock referenced in the Wednesday hike description above.  Just under one-half mile in either direction at the top of the hike is in a slot canyon that involves some minor scrambling but is one of the most picturesque areas in the Spring Mountains.  Group departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Helmut DeCandia.

Saturday, July 12 - Mack's Canyon Road.  A leisurely trek along a recreational gravel road is in store for participants on this easy to moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike starting along Lee Canyon Road a bit west of Sawmill Picnic Area.  Even though it's a road it will still be beautiful as the route passes through a transition area of vegetation involving forest and has open views of the lower country to the northeast.  Meet the group at Santa Fe Station for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, July 13 - No Name/Bristlecone Loop.  Although essentially a loop hike covering about 6 miles, the opening mile along Bristlecone Trail is also the last mile getting back to the starting point.  In between is a steep climb along the No Name Trail, a descent along the southernmost section of Bonanza Trail, and a continuation on the upper section of Bristlecone Trail.  Overall rating is moderate but the steep one-half mile climb on No Name is a bit tougher.  Meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, July 14 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Basic parameters for this outing are 4 to 5 miles with a moderate rating.  The destination will be determined that morning by the participants at the assembly point.  Departure from Red Rock Casino is at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Monday, July 14 - Big Falls/Mary Jane Falls.  The higher Spring Mountain alternative this Monday involves some pretty serious scrambling getting to the base a the first 60-foot waterfall on the north end of Kyle Canyon.  Although there probably will not be any flowing water, there is plenty of avalanche debris to contend with along the route.  The approach to Mary Jane Falls will probably be up the old decommissioned trail with a descent along the regular trail.  Overall distance is about 5 miles with a strenuous rating.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, July 15 - Mount Charleston.  The big peak in the Spring Mountains is the intended destination for this very strenuous 17-mile hike gaining over 4,200 net elevation along Trail Canyon Trail and North Loop Trail.  At 11,918 feet above sea level, those who reach the top will be standing on the highest point in southern Nevada and be afforded a very extensive view in all directions.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a departure at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Wednesday, July 16 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  If you have read through the earlier part of this schedule you should know what to expect from another one of the early morning Red Rock area hikes designed to keep participants in the lower elevations near Las Vegas but still allow them to get off the trails by midmorning and avoid the major heat of the day.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, July 17 - Fletcher Peak.  The standard route to the top of one of the major peaks surrounding Kyle Canyon that will be used for this hike involves the eastern end of North Loop Trail and the somewhat tougher ridge trail leading to the peak.  Although it still carries a strenuous rating, the 7-mile out-and-back hike with 1,900 feet of elevation gain is undoubtedly the easiest route to the top of something big in the vicinity.  Meet the rest of the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, July 18 - Telephone Canyon.  Here is one of the easiest hikes in the upper elevations of the Spring Mountains (actually rated easy to moderate).  That's because this 4-mile point-to-point hike is almost entirely downhill, dropping about 1,000 feet between the starting point at Robber's Roost and the ending point along Kyle Canyon Road.  A few extra vehicles will be needed for the car shuttle.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, July 19 - Fletcher Canyon Dog Hike.  Here is your chance to bring your pooch on an official club hike.  This is an easy to moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike and you need to bring a leash, a couple of poop bags, some dog biscuits, and water for both yourself and your canine friend.  Sorry, no cats are allowed, but people without pets are welcome to join if they would like to go with the dogs.  If interested, the group (without the coordinator, who will be at the trailhead) will meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Participants should self-organize and drive to the trailhead off Kyle Canyon Road to meet the coordinator at 7:30 AM.  Or you can just meet her at that location and time for the hike.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Saturday, July 19 - Deer Creek.  Apart from the dogs, there will still be the regular leisurely hike this Saturday.  The easy to moderate 3-mile out-and-back hike will pass several spots with historic significance and will take a break on a ridge with nice views extending to the north.  Most of the surface for this hike will be on gravel road and there is one area of less than a quarter mile that is quite steep requiring some extra care both on the climb and on the descent.  Participants for this hike will leave from Santa Fe Station at the standard time of 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Sunday, July 20 - Fletcher Peak.  If you missed this hike the previous Thursday, or even if you like it so much you can do it twice in the span of three days, here is another opportunity to bag this 10,200-foot peak on the edge of Kyle Canyon.  The route used for both hikes going up North Loop Trail are identical so there shouldn't be any surprises.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, July 21 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  The destination for this lower elevation hike will be determined at the gathering point.  Guidelines will be something rated moderate with a distance in the range of 4 to 5 miles.  Departure from Red Rock Casino is at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, July 22 - Mummy's Tummy.  The second highest peak in the Spring Mountain Range will be the destination for this strenuous 9-mile out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of 3,900 feet.  It will start up Trail Canyon, turn left at the junction with North Loop Trail, and leave that trail for a very intensive climb up a scree field to a ridge line about three miles into the hike.  Once on the ridge there is still quite a bit of difficult terrain to negotiate, with the final climb through a gravel filled notch in a cliff.  Join the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Wednesday, July 23 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Another of the moderate early morning hikes designed to get participants off the trails before the day heats up too much will probably cover a distance of 4 to 5 miles.  The destination will be determined at the assembly point and could include locations in Cottonwood Valley or on Blue Diamond Hill as well as Red Rock Canyon.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Saturday, July 26 - Upper Bristlecone Trail.  The upper portion of Lee Canyon will be the site for our regular leisurely hike this Saturday.  The group will head up the Bristlecone Trail from the end of the highway near the ski resort and go as far as the junction with Bonanza Trail where they will take a break before returning along the same route.  The overall distance is just under 5 miles, there is 700 feet of elevation gain, and the rating is moderate.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station is at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Sunday, July 27 - Bristlecone Loop.  Unlike the previous day, this moderate hike will take in the entire official trail at the upper end of Lee Canyon.  Total distance is right at 6 miles and it will be conducted in a counter clockwise direction.  It's probable that the lower trailhead will be used as the starting point, which means the gravel Forest Service fire road is the first section and the paved highway portion is the last section.  The group will leave Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM for the trailhead.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, July 28 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Get in 4 or 5 miles on a moderate hike and get done by midmorning to avoid the real heat of the day.  That is the objective for this outing with the destination to be determined at the assembly point that morning.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, July 28 - Willow Peak.  Prepare yourself mentally for what is definitely one of the three toughest hikes in the Spring Mountains.  The elusive peak in the northern part of the range doesn't look that bad from below, but the two-mile approach along the ridge from the south contains some of the most difficult terrain around.  The overall distance for the hike is estimated at 10 miles with a very strenuous rating.  For this outing we will be attempting a descent on the north side of the peak down to Wheeler Pass Road, which will be exploratory for our group.  We will need to spot vehicles and there is a couple miles of rough gravel road necessitating high clearance vehicles.  Wear long hiking trousers, bring your first aid kits, and meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 6:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Wednesday, July 30 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  This is the ninth offering of an early morning Red Rock hike this month and the write-up has been somewhat different on each of the other eight occasions, so if you need more details look at one of the descriptions above.  Otherwise, just meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, July 31 - South Sister.  Due to the extended closure of Old Mill Picnic Area we have been forced to alter the starting point and some of the route for this strenuous 5-mile hike with 2,000 feet of elevation gain.  Even so the last very difficult section of steep trail, the climb through the cliff, and the walk along the narrow ridge to the peak with exposure remains as it has always been.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

As a final note of club is sponsoring an out of town trip from July 20 through July 25 in the Lake Tahoe area which will include several days of hiking in the Sierra Nevada Range.  If you are interested in going but have not made reservations, please contact Chris Dempsey at dempseylv@aol.com or at (702) 823-2355 for more details.  The final roster needs to be set no later than July 15.

June 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  Hikes during the month of June will be split between the Red Rock Canyon area (early mornings on select Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) and the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains (usually referred to as the Mount Charleston area).

Sunday, June 1 - Hidden Forest.  It has been a while since we have offered this strenuous 11-mile out-and-back hike in the Sheep Mountains.  Could it have anything to do with the twenty plus mile drive over some of the worst roads around?  The hike itself is a beauty, starting out in the high desert area on the north side of the range through Deadman's Canyon and ending in a ponderosa pine forest deep in the mountains where a CCC era cabin was restored a few years ago.  Overall elevation gain is in the 2,000 foot range but it is fairly gradual.  High clearance vehicles are essential and four-wheel drive is quite helpful.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Monday, June 2 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  The summer hiking series in the lower elevations of Red Rock Canyon gets heated up this month.  Our coordinator may have a destination in mind or could ask the participants to come up with one.  In any event the hikes in this series will be in the moderate range with a targeted distance of 4 or 5 miles, the idea being to get everyone off the trails by mid-morning when it really starts to get hot.  This month the departure times from Red Rock Casino will be moved up a half hour to 6:00 AM to take advantage of somewhat cooler early temperatures.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Monday, June 2 - Bristlecone Loop.  For those wanting to experience the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains where you may even need a windbreaker in the early morning the alternative will be a moderate 6-mile loop hike in the upper reaches of Lee Canyon that gains about 800 feet of elevation.  The views of the surrounding mountains are exceptional and participants will pass the gnarled pine trees that give the hike its name.  The rest stop will likely occur at the junction with the Bonanza Trail which is close to the highest point of the hike.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, June 3 - Lee Peak.  As a preamble to the following week's attack on the highest point in southern Nevada our Tough Tuesday group will be heading up Trail Canyon Trail and North Loop Trail on a very strenuous 13-mile out-and-back trek.  Situated along the north ridge between Mt. Charleston and Mummy Mountain, Lee is technically not listed as an actual peak, but those who reach the top will know it is a major climb with about 3,700 feet of elevation gain.  The hike is essentially all trail but the last section is quite steep with significant loose rock.  The departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Tuesday, June 3 - Cave Springs.  As an alternative to the Lee Peak hike on this date we will be offering an out-and-back trek along the same trails starting at Trail Canyon Trail but only going as far along North Loop Trail as the horse trough at Cave Springs.  This moderately strenuous hike gains slightly more than 2,000 feet over a total distance of 6 miles.  With the snow on the peaks this year there is a good chance that water will be at least trickling through the hose into the trough.  If you want to find out meet the rest of the group at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Wednesday, June 4 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  The exact destination will be determined at the assembly point but the parameters are set at a moderate hike covering a distance of 4 to 5 miles.  Elevation gain will be capped around 600 feet and scrambling will probably be held to a minimum with most of the route on established trail.  The objective will be to be back at the vehicles by mid-morning to minimize the heat impact.  If interested meet the other participants at Red Rock Casino for a 6:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, June 5 - Trail Canyon/Fletcher Canyon.  This moderately strenuous 6-mile point-to-point hike will have more descent than it has climb but the elevation gain of 1,600 feet up Trail Canyon to the junction with North Loop Trail is still pretty significant.  Getting into the upper portion of Fletcher Canyon involves a steep descent down a slippery trail.  While there is sporadic trail in the upper section there is still quite a bit of significant scrambling.  The toughest parts are down a rock face along a waterfall and through the rabbit hole next to Obstacle Rock.  The last two miles back to the vehicles are an easy walk.  Extra vehicles will be needed for the car shuttle.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, June 6 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  If you are into Red Rock area hikes rather than the Mt. Charleston area then this moderate 4 to 5-mile outing should satisfy your needs.  The destination will be determined at the assembly point but the hike will not have significant elevation gain and should be mostly over existing trails.  Red Rock Casino will be used as the staging point with a departure at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Friday, June 6 - Mummy's Toe.  Snow and ice at Mummy Springs prevented our intrepid group from advancing beyond that point on May 6 so here is another opportunity to reach the top of one of the most distinctive peaks on the edge of Kyle Canyon.  The normal out-and-back route will be used for the strenuous trek of 7 or 8 miles that starts at the North Loop trailhead off Deer Creek Road.  It passes Raintree and Mummy Springs and then starts a steep climb up a rapidly disintegrating trail that turns into a difficult scramble route as it approaches the upper ridge of the mountain.  The group will have a 7:00 AM departure time from Santa Fe Station for this hike.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, June 7 - Mary Jane Falls.  The elevation gain for this moderate out-and-back hike is 920 feet and the total distance to be covered is 3 miles.  At the falls there is an short optional trek to a shallow cave at the base of a cliff that provides an exceptional view of the upper portion of Kyle Canyon.  Pace will be leisurely to accommodate participants getting into the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains for the first time this year.  The group will be assembling at Santa Fe Station and will depart for the trailhead at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Sunday, June 8 - Long Canyon.  This is a new hike for our club that was found on the www.birdandhike.com web site of Jim Boone, one of our esteemed members.  It will be offered as an exploratory out-and-back hike along gravel roads and through dry washes in the Desert National Wildlife Range near Corn Creek.  Total distance will be 8 or 9 miles with 2,000 feet of elevation gain that does include a short stretch of narrows.  We are calling this a strenuous hike due to distance and elevation gain.  High clearance vehicles are preferable due to road conditions.  The assembled group will leave from Santa Fe Station at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, June 9 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Start off the week back in the lower elevations of Red Rock Canyon on a hike to be determined at the assembly point by the participants.  General parameters are that the hike will be around 4 or 5 miles without significant elevation gain and will be rated moderate.  Group composition will determine whether or not there is any scrambling.  The group will meet in the regular spot at Red Rock Casino for a 6:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, June 10 - Mount Charleston.  Here is the first scheduled assault for 2014 on the highest peak in Southern Nevada.  With the top elevation of 11,918 feet the very strenuous out-and-back hike from Trail Canyon trailhead involves over 4,200 feet of gain and covers a total distance between 16 and 17 miles.  The hike on the previous Tuesday will probably provide ample insight about trail conditions above 11,000 feet that could include residual snow and ice.  Participants need to be in excellent shape to attempt this hike and need to carry lots of water and electrolytes in addition to food.  Departure will be at 6:00 AM from Santa Fe Station.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Tuesday, June 10 - Wild Horse Canyon.  The alternate hike on this Tuesday will be a moderate loop hike covering a little over 3 miles on the east side of Mummy Mountain.  The starting point is along Highway 158 and the first part of the hike involves a climb of about 1,000 feet up North Loop Trail to a mid-ridge meadows area.  After a rest break the group will make the steep trail descent into the well-shaded canyon that used to be home to a lone wild horse.  There are some springs emanating in this canyon that give rise to columbine and other plants dependent on good water availability.  The group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, June 11 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  This will be the last opportunity for nearly two weeks to participate on a weekday outing in the Red Rock area (there is an option available on Sunday, June 15).  These early morning hikes usually cover 4 to 5 miles and have a moderate rating without significant elevation gain.  The mix of hikers at the assembly point usually determines where the hike will actually occur and whether or not there will be any scrambling.  One of the intents is to have everyone off the trails by mid-morning.  If interested meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, June 12 - Raintree via Trail Canyon.  The slightly longer route to the 3,000 year old bristlecone pine called Raintree will be used for this moderately strenuous hike of 7.5 miles that gains 2,200 feet of elevation.  It will be an out-and-back hike starting up Trail Canyon Trail and continuing to the east on North Loop Trail once that junction is reached.  The most scenic part of the hike is along the section of North Loop Trail which provides fantastic open views of Kyle Canyon and the surrounding peaks.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for a departure at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, June 13 - Upper Bristlecone Trail.  A pleasant walk through the woods is perhaps the best way to describe this moderate out-and-back hike covering a total distance of close to 5 miles.  Elevation gain is around 700 feet between the starting point near the top of Lee Canyon Road and the turn around point at the junction of the Bristlecone and Bonanza Trails.  The trail winds through a few minor rock outcroppings and provides really great views of the surrounding peaks including Mummy Mountain and South Sister.  The assembled group will leave from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Saturday, June 14 - Sawmill Trails.  This week's leisurely hike will find the group heading up Lee Canyon Road but stopping at the Sawmill Picnic Area before getting into the upper canyon.  The hike itself is a 3-mile loop that would generally be rated easy to moderate, at least for hikes in the upper reaches of the Spring Mountains.  After meandering through a forest of cliff roses the trail gains a ridge with spectacular views to the northeast.  In the last mile there is a steep descent down a recreational gravel road and the finish is slightly uphill.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Sunday, June 15 - Blue Diamond Ridges.  This moderate early morning hike on the hill across from Red Rock Canyon will cover a distance up to 7 miles starting from the Cowboy Stables parking lot along Highway 159.  How much the group does will be determined by the temperature increases during the morning.  If it stays somewhat cool the destination will be the new Las Vegas Overlook.  Rating should be moderate or a bit more.  Participants will gather at Red Rock Casino and leave for the stables at 5:45 AM.  The coordinator will meet them at the stables for a 6:00 AM start to the hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Sunday, June 15 - South Sister Saddle Loop.  The alternate hike in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains will occur on the north side of Lee Canyon.  The route will start from the Lower Bristlecone trailhead, follow that trail to the Bonanza junction, and continue up Bonanza Trail to a ridge leading to the saddle approaching the route to South Sister.  This will be an 8-mile trek with 2,100 feet of elevation gain that involves some significant off-trail scrambling.  Rating for the hike is moderately strenuous and a pretty good pace will be maintained.  If this hike suits you meet the rest of the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, June 16 - Trail Canyon.  The trail through this canyon can be taxing as the elevation gain averages over 750 feet per mile but it can serve as a great training hike for longer outings in the Spring Mountains.  Total distance will be 4.5 miles with the highest point of the hike being near the junction with North Loop Trail.  The snack break will occur either on the logs arrayed at the junction or on a rock ledge slightly above it that provides striking views of Fletcher Canyon.  Rating is moderate but some people think it is a bit more because of the climb rate.  The assembled group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, June 17 - Mummy's Nose.  Although not very long at about 5 miles this out-and-back hike is extremely steep as it gains well over 3,000 feet from the starting point along Lee Canyon Road.  Without much trail to work with and lots of scrambling it could take six hours or more to accomplish the task.  Only those club members in the best shape and without a concern for exposure should attempt this very strenuous outing.  The coordinator reserves the right to deny participation to those not qualified.  The group will meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, June 17 - Cockscomb Ridge.  The alternate hike for this date certainly presents its own challenges.  It will be a repeat of the previous day's hike up Trail Canyon but it will turn south at the junction with North Loop Trail and head out on a narrow ridge that approaches the base of a large rounded rock formation designated as the comb.  This section involves steep and loose trail, irregular scrambling, and some exposure.  The overall distance for the strenuous out-and-back hike is close to 6 miles.  The group for this hike will also assemble at Santa Fe Station and will leave from there at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Thursday, June 19 - Mummy Springs Loop.  Our coordinator rated this loop hike as moderately strenuous but it could be jumped up one more notch as it involves some distance, lots of elevation gain, and a good chunk of off-trail scrambling up a steep ridge.  The 6-mile hike will climb from the Deer Creek Picnic Area up the steep ridge that intersects the Mummy's Toe Trail a bit to the north of the springs.  From there the group will turn south and pass both the springs and Raintree on the way down.  At the meadows the group will turn left and descend through Wild Horse Canyon back to the starting point.  Overall elevation gain is around 1,600 feet.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, June 20 - Raintree via North Loop.  This hike is nearly a repeat of the previous day's outing but it will not involve any scrambling or go past the springs to the north of the 3,000 year old bristlecone pine.  Instead it will be a 6-mile hike that will be out-and-back on the switchback section of the North Loop Trail above the first meadows and will follow the alternate route down through Wild Horse Canyon.  This hike definitely is rated moderately strenuous and will cover a distance of 6 miles while gaining 1,600 feet of elevation.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Saturday, June 21 - Stanley B Springs.  This leisurely out-and-back trek in a side canyon off Kyle Canyon will cover a distance of about 3 miles and visit the site of an old mining claim.  On a large tree at the branching of a drainage is the sign that proclaims ownership of the mine, with the shafts just above in the right fork that requires some scrambling to reach.  A spring currently exits from the lower shaft, which is always full of water.  Otherwise, the entire hike is on trail with an elevation gain of 400 feet and a rating of easy to moderate.  The group will depart at 8:30 AM from Santa Fe Station.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, June 23 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  The lower elevations of Red Rock will be the site for a moderate hike of 4 to 5 miles that is designed to get participants off the trails before the heat of the day sets in.  There are a number of possible hikes that fit the parameters and the exact hike will be determined at the meeting location based on the abilities and desires of the participants.  The group will depart promptly at 6:00 AM from Red Rock Casino to ensure the early finish.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, June 24 - Fletcher Peak via Hummingbird Gulch.  It's a great feeling to have finally reached the top of Hummingbird Gulch at the saddle between North Loop Trail and Fletcher Peak.  With the intensity of the scrambling, the constant scree, the downed logs, and the thick brush that forces hikers to use long trousers to avoid getting scratched, it seems to take a long time to reach that point.  As a result the remaining stretch to the top of the peak seems mild.  This strenuous 7-mile loop hike with 1,800 feet of elevation gain will return to the starting point along North Loop Trail.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, June 24 - Mary Jane Falls.  The alternate hike of the day is a rather straightforward out-and-back trail hike to the base of the waterfall that is part of the major drainage on the central section of the north ridge between Charleston and Mummy.  With 920 feet of elevation gain, most of which is along the switchbacks on the second half of the climb, it will still test the average recreational hiker, but it does provide rewards with great views of Kyle Canyon.  Total distance is only 3 miles and the rating is moderate.  The group doing this hike will leave from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, June 25 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  As with all the other hikes in this series you can expect a moderate hike of 4 to 5 miles without very steep terrain that will get the participants back to the vehicles early in the day.  The actual outing will be decided by the group at the assembly point at Red Rock Casino and the departure time will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, June 26 - No Name/Bristlecone Loop.  One of our standard summer hikes in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains is this moderate 6-mile loop that also uses part of the Bonanza Trail.  That's because it seems to have just the right blend of difficulty and scenery to provide a decent workout within the confines of great surroundings.  Rating is generally moderate but there is a fairly significant stretch of slightly more than a half mile where most of the 800 feet of elevation gain occurs.  If interested in being part of the group plan on getting to Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, June 27 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Here's the final opportunity this month to visit picturesque Red Rock Canyon on an Around the Bend Friends outing.  The group will leave from Red Rock Casino at 6:00 AM for a moderate 4 to 5-mile hike west of Las Vegas that will be determined that morning.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Friday, June 27 - Trail Canyon/Fletcher Canyon.  Essentially this hike will be identical to the offering on June 5 but there will be one addition that will increase the overall distance to 6.5 miles.  After reaching the junction of Trail Canyon and Fletcher Canyon the group will continue along North Loop Trail for another half mile before starting the descent into Fletcher Canyon using a rocky drainage approach.  Participants will encounter scree, Class 2 and 3 scrambling, and a few other obstacles including the famous rabbit hole at Obstacle Rock.  The group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, June 28 - Wild Horse Ridge.  This moderate 4-mile loop hike begins at the parking lot for Deer Creek Picnic Area with the group first walking along the highway to the North Loop trailhead.  After hiking up North Loop Trail to the meadows they will head off on the trail toward Wild Horse Canyon, then take a faint trail down a side ridge that leads to Wild Horse Ridge, which will have spectacular open views of the area.  The last mile of the hike involves a walk uphill on a gravel road followed by a downhill section through Deer Creek Picnic Area.  We will be departing from Santa Fe Station at 8:30 AM for this hike.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Sunday, June 29 - Pahrump Overlook Peak.  A high point on the west side of the Spring Mountains looking down at Pahrump is the target for this strenuous 7-mile out-and-back hike.  It opens with an easy mile through the woods on Upper Bristlecone Trail and gets more difficult going up No Name Trail to the saddle.  From there it becomes a cross country jaunt with plenty of bushwhacking and scrambling over and around rock formations until it reaches the rocky crag that constitutes the peak.  Santa Fe Station will be used as the staging point with a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Monday, June 30 - Sawmill Trails Extended.  The exact route may be determined a bit on the fly but it will have a distance of 5 or 6 miles and have a moderate rating.  The intent is to do something like a double loop hike that will start from the Sawmill Picnic Area, cross Lee Canyon Road into Lower Kyle Canyon along Champion Road, then cross back north of the highway and do the second loop on that side.  Participants should gather at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

May 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  Hikes during the month of May will be split between the Red Rock Canyon Area and the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains (usually referred to as the Mount Charleston area).  Information regarding assembly locations and directions to those locations is immediately below.  Some of the Red Rock area hikes will have a secondary pickup location if they are south in Cottonwood Valley or on the west side of the escarpment.

Red Rock Canyon Area.  Our main assembly point for hikes in Red Rock Canyon, Cottonwood Valley, and the west side of the escarpment is at the Red Rock Casino on Charleston Boulevard just east of 215.  To access the meeting spot, turn into the casino property at the signalized intersection directly across from Canyon Pointe, turn right directly in front of the casino, and immediately turn right into the lot.  If traveling east on Charleston from 215 you can turn right at the first entrance and then make an immediate left.  We will be parking at the north end of the lot along Charleston Boulevard.  Whenever Red Rock area hikes start from Highway 160, there will be a secondary pickup point for south side participants.  That location is at the gas station at the intersection of Highways 159 and 160.  Generally, this will be a brief stop which will occur about twenty-five minutes after the departure from Red Rock Casino.  When hikes begin at or near the community of Blue Diamond, south side participants can drive directly to that location.

Mount Charleston Area.  For hikes north of Las Vegas in either the Mount Charleston area or in the Sheep Mountains the assembly point will be at the Santa Fe Station Casino.  This property has two parking garages, one on the north end of the casino close to Highway 95 and one on the southeast side closer to the intersection of Rancho and Lone Mountain Road.  We always use the third level of the southeast parking garage as our meeting location.  This garage can be accessed from Lone Mountain Road traveling in either direction at the entrance near the theater addition.  It can also be accessed from Rancho.  If traveling northbound on Rancho turn in at the signal and turn left to access the garage.

Starting this month there will be a number of early hikes offered in the immediate Red Rock area on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  The exact destination and route for these hikes will be determined on the morning of each hike by the participants.  The general parameters are between 4 and 6 miles, no more than 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and a moderate rating.  These hikes will be listed on the schedule as "Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug."  One of the goals for these hikes is to be back at the vehicles by 9:30 to avoid as much of the heat of the day as possible.  For those who become regulars on these hikes, Doug will compile a list of names and e-mail addresses to send out occasional notifications of any short term schedule changes.

Thursday, May 1 - Little Zion.  Here is one of those classic bushwhack hikes that we haven't had on the schedule for some time.  This strenuous out-and-back trek starts from the end of a gravel Forest Service road in Lovell Canyon and follows a series of drainages up the back side of the escarpment to an overlook behind Spring Mountain Ranch.  An undulating trail then follows the edge of the upper ridges to an open area with spectacular sandstone slabs and features including an arch in the making.  Total distance is about 6 miles and elevation gain is around 1,400 feet.  High clearance vehicles are needed for the drive.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 7:30 AM departure.  There will be a quick stop at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 about 7:50 AM to pick up any south side participants.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, May 2 - First Creek.  Easy to moderate is the general description for this 4-mile out-and-back hike from the signed trailhead along Highway 159.  The first mile is very level and leads to a hidden waterfall in a grotto area that provides a sharp contrast to the desert setting forming the approach.  A set of trails then continues upstream along the creek and includes some choppy terrain and a bit of scrambling reaching a seasonal boulder waterfall near the entrance to First Creek Canyon.  The return to the vehicles will follow a snack break on the sandstone boulders.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, May 3 - Two Peaks and an Arch.  This is a 4-mile scramble in the northern section of the Calico Hills that visits the arch near Sandstone Quarry, the main Calico Tank, and Calico II Peak before backtracking down the upper portions of the western side of the sandstone hills.  After descending back onto the Calico Tanks Trail the group will climb on the east side of the trail along Mass Production Wall and stop at Red Cap in the northern section of the hills.  After a break the traditional ascent route will be used for the descent back to Sandstone Quarry.  This hike is rated strenuous due to the amount of scrambling and there is around 1,500 feet of elevation gain.  Meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Saturday, May 3 - Fossil Ridge.  Across the highway from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon is Blue Diamond Hill with its collection of ridges and canyons that beg to be explored.  The later hike for this Saturday that starts from the Cowboy Stables parking lot along Highway 159 will take a look at the first ridge to the south.  This 4-mile loop version of the hike is rated easy to moderate with some emphasis on the moderate as it gains about 700 feet climbing on the ridge above Echo Canyon with a return along the Bunny Trail.  Bring plenty of water as the temperatures in early May can start climbing early in the day.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator -John Stewart.

Sunday, May 4 - Raintree via Trail Canyon.  Our first hike of the year in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains will be an out-and-back trek starting at the trailhead for Trail Canyon and continuing east along North Loop Trail to the base of a 3,000 year old Bristlecone pine.  Total distance is 7.5 miles with elevation gain of 2,200 feet and the hike carries a strenuous rating.  As this is our first effort getting close to 10,000 feet above sea level the pace will probably be somewhat slower with more breaks.  Don't attempt this outing unless you are familiar with hiking where the air is thin.  The assembly point for the group will be on the 3rd level of the southeast parking garage at Santa Fe Station.  Departure for the hike will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, May 5 - Oak Creek.  This moderate 5 to 6-mile out-and-back hike along the creek and into the canyon of the same name is for the most part fairly level as elevation gain is only about 300 feet.  The first (and last) mile of the hike is across the desert floor from the gravel parking lot where the scenic drive exits back onto Highway 159.  As the group nears the creek and the escarpment to the west vegetation becomes much more luxuriant and scenery abounds.  There are six crossings of Oak Creek on this hike and the snack break will be taken on sandstone boulders in the drainage of the canyon.  Meet the other hikers at Red Rock Casino for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, May 6 - Mummy's Toe.  Tough is the best description one can come up with for this strenuous 7 to 8-mile out-and-back hike gaining about 2,600 feet of elevation.  The trek begins innocently enough heading up North Loop Trail from the eastern end and passing both Raintree and Mummy Springs getting to the drainage that leads to the top of the ridge.  Quite soon starting the climb from Mummy Springs the trail turns steep and loose, then disintegrates into a route along the ridge and a final steep assault through the rocks to the top of this distinctive peak.  Once off the trail the unmarked route is quite specific and the group will need to stick together.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM start.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Tuesday, May 6 - Lost Creek Waterfall.  The alternate outing for this Tuesday is a moderately strenuous partial loop hike of 5 miles that is situated in Red Rock Canyon.  The hike begins from the Ice Box parking lot, proceeds along Ice Box Trail a short distance, then turns north on SMYC Trail.  After a visit to the base of Lost Creek Waterfall the group will climb along a steep trail to reach a ledge that leads around back to the top of that same waterfall.  After a break and the following descent the group will probably visit a petroglyph wall and swing around on the eastern section of the Willow Springs Loop Trail to return on SMYC Trail.  The group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 7 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  The early morning summer hiking season in the Red Rock Canyon area kicks off today with a 4 to 5-mile outing that will attempt to beat the scorching heat associated with Las Vegas in the summer.  See the description for the series in the preamble to this schedule.  Pace will be moderate but not too quick and there will be a short break along the way.  The group will meet at Red Rock Casino prior to leaving for the hike.  Departure times in May will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Wednesday, May 7 - No Name/Bristlecone Loop.  For those interested in hiking in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains where it is cooler there will be an alternative this Wednesday.  The partial loop version of this moderately strenuous 5 or 6-mile hike will be done in a counter clockwise direction, meaning the short section of the Bonanza Trail involved on the hike will come before a descent on No Name Trail back to the Bristlecone Trail.  Total elevation gain is around 1,000 feet starting from the top end of Lee Canyon Road.  Participants on this hike will meet at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Richard Hansen.

Thursday, May 8 - Sandstone/White Rock Loop.  The first time the coordinator ever did this moderately strenuous 7-mile loop hike he was trudging along in about eight inches of snow in the top section.  That won't be the case today as we will probably all be sweating from the rising temperatures, so we need to get as much of the 1,500 foot climb out of the way as early as possible.  The route used starts at Sandstone Quarry and follows the Grand Circle Trail over to the White Rock Springs parking area, then climbs past Keystone Thrust toward La Madre Mountain and an eventual descent in a series of drainages.  The group will gather at Red Rock Casino for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, May 9 - Cottonwood Pass Loop.  Continuing our early morning hikes in the general Red Rock area will be this moderate 6-mile loop outing in South Cottonwood Valley.  The trek will start from the gravel parking area south of Highway 160 also used for Badger Pass, which occurs the following day.  It will follow a combination of dirt roads and trails toward Mount Potosi and loop past Cottonwood Pass on the Goodsprings Road before heading back to the vehicles on the Deadhorse Trail in Red Valley.  Early group departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM, there will be a quick stop at the gas station on Highways 159 and 160 at 6:25 AM, and participants will meet the coordinator at the gravel parking lot for a 6:45 AM start of hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, May 10 - Badger Pass.  The earlier hike of the day will be a moderate partial loop effort starting from the Late Night parking area along Highway 160 and heading past the low northern section of the Bird Spring Range to the destination.  After climbing to the pass from the ridge to the north the group will descend down the east side of the saddle for a return to the starting point.  Total distance for this hike is 7 miles.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino and the departure time will be 8:00 AM.  There will be a stopover at the gas station at the 159/160 highway junction about 8:25 AM to pick up south side participants.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, May 10 - Badger Pass.  This is not a typo - the leisurely group on this Saturday will be going to the same destination as the early group, just using the trail that starts from the gravel parking area indicated in the May 9 hike description.  This makes the total distance for the loop hike 3 miles and there is 700 feet of elevation gain.  Rating is easy to moderate.  The shorter version of the hike approaches the pass along the same ridge used in the longer hike, but makes its descent from the saddle on the west side down to Deadhorse Trail.  This group will also assemble at Red Rock Casino and will leave at 8:30 AM, with a quick stop at the gas station around 8:55 AM on the way to the hike.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, May 11 - Southern Calico Hills Scramble.  Although this strenuous scramble is only 4 miles in length it certainly seems much longer when it is finally finished.  With around 1,900 feet of gross elevation gain in the total package the hike will challenge strong club members.  Starting at Red Springs Picnic Area the route climbs to Angel Pass and on to the peak above.  From there it traverses toward the main Calico Tank and down to Calico II.  After following the canyon past Calico I the group will turn left and climb over the ridge, descending along the Grand Staircase.  Instead of meeting at Red Rock Casino participants should drive directly to Red Springs Picnic Area for a 7:30 AM start.  GPS coordinates for the meeting location are 36 degrees 08'49.18" N by 115 degrees 25'08.06" W.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, May 12 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Meet the rest of the group at Red Rock Casino for a 4 to 6-mile moderate hike in the Red Rock area to be determined at the meeting location.  Departure will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, May 13 - Mummy's Tummy.  Plan on about five hours or more for this very strenuous outing that climbs to the top of Mummy Mountain, at 11,542 feet the second highest official peak in the Spring Mountains.  Elevation gain is 3,900 feet and the total distance to be covered on this out-and-back hike is around 9 miles.  The opening segment is along Trail Canyon, which many people consider to be tough, but wait until you get to the scree field above North Loop Trail, where two steps forward also means one back.  Once on the ridge the going is still difficult and includes a Class 3 climb up a notch in the cliffs to the top.  Participants should meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Laszlo Heredy.

Tuesday, May 13 - White Rock Hills Loop.  The alternative to the tough climb of Mummy Mountain is a straightforward loop around the two cream colored sandstone peaks at the north end of Red Rock Canyon.  At 6.4 miles in length the trail hike climbs a net of 900 feet of elevation and is rated moderate.  The route for this effort will start at Willow Springs Picnic Area and proceed in a counter clockwise direction, going through the desert section first to minimize the heat of a typical May morning.  Assembly point is at Red Rock Casino from which the group will leave at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 14 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Meet the rest of the group at Red Rock Casino for a 4 to 6-mile moderate hike in the Red Rock area to be determined at the meeting location.  Departure will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, May 15 - Krafft Mountain Traverse.  Changing up the experience from the April 17 trek across the rose colored peak behind the community of Calico Basin, this strenuous 5-mile loop hike will cross the top of the mountain in a west to east direction.  Starting from Red Springs Picnic Area the group will head up Five Stop Hill and turn right for some serious boulder scrambling climbing to the top ridge.  After reaching the high point they will continue east and follow the tricky descent route to the lower portion of Gateway Canyon.  The trail walk back to the starting point through a world-class boulder field will seem quite tame in comparison.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Friday, May 16 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Here is a final chance for the week to join the early risers and accomplish a moderate hike of around 5 miles in the Red Rock Canyon area.  As with the other hikes in this series, it is intended to get people off the trails by mid-morning when the heat of the day starts to come on.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Saturday, May 17 - Fern Canyon & Beyond.  This moderately strenuous 4-mile hike has a bit of everything and will start at the Pine Creek trailhead along the scenic drive.  The group will hike across the desert, enter the North Fork of Pine Creek (locally referred to as Fern Canyon), and stroll past ponds with an abundance of ferns under a nice shade canopy of trees.  Some people may choose to stay in this spot while others continue up the canyon, doing some Class 3 scrambling over and around boulders to a trickling waterfall.  Elevation gain is around 500 feet.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, May 17 - Cowboy Horse Trails.  The last Saturday Red Rock area hike for the season will be a 3.5-mile hike in the desert across from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon.  Following the dirt paths normally used by trail riders from the Cowboy Horse Stables, the loop route winds through the valley north of Blue Diamond Hill and climbs to the top of a 500-foot hill for a break.  Except for this climb the terrain is quite level, so the leisurely paced hike should probably be rated easy to moderate.  Meet other participants at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, May 18 - Blue Diamond Ridges.  This moderate early morning hike will cover a distance up to 7 miles starting from the gravel parking lot at the Cowboy Stables located on Highway 159 a short distance beyond the entrance to Red Rock Canyon.  How much the group does will be determined by how much the temperature rises.  If it stays cool enough to get in the full hike it will include a visit to the Las Vegas Overlook on Blue Diamond Hill.  Participants should gather at Red Rock Casino, leaving at 6:15 AM for the stables.  The coordinator will meet them at the parking area for a 6:30 AM start of the hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Monday, May 19 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Begin the week with a moderate early morning trek in the vicinity of Red Rock.  The actual hike will be determined by the group at the assembly point.  Generally, these hikes cover a distance around 5 miles and get finished by 9:30 AM to take advantage of any cooler temperatures.  Meet the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Tuesday, May 20 - South Sister.  Tough Tuesdays in the Spring Mountains continue this week with an assault of an exposed peak on the north side of Lee Canyon.  This hike will start from the Lower Bristlecone trailhead and follow an old interpretive trail toward the top end of Old Mill Picnic Area.  From there the group will turn left into a steep canyon and access the ridge west of the peak.  The final part of the 1,800 foot climb will include a very steep trail and some exposed scrambling through a cliff and across a rocky top.  Rating for this 5-mile out-and-back hike is strenuous.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, May 20 - Stanley B/Fletcher Canyons.  The alternative hike this Tuesday is strenuous enough in its own right.  Starting from the parking area on Kyle Canyon Road across from the start of the Fletcher Canyon Trail, the group will follow a trail along the Kyle Canyon drainage for about a mile to access Stanley B.  Once past the Leroy Mine it turns into a scrambling route up a drainage to a ridge extending out from Cockscomb Peak.  The descent into Fletcher Canyon is tricky and there is lots of brush heading down the canyon toward the rabbit hole at Obstacle Rock.  There will be an 8:00 AM departure from Santa Fe Station for this hike.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 21 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Getting back to the starting point before the heat of the day sets in is one of the major goals of this early morning outing in the Red Rock area.  Come prepared to offer suggestions of where the hike should be, for the destination will be determined by the participants at the assembly point.  The general mileage range for these hikes is between 4 and 6 miles.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will occur at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, May 22 - Echo Canyon & Skull Canyon.  A bit later start may mean rising temperatures, so bring extra water for this moderately strenuous 7-mile loop hike from the Cowboy Stables parking lot just off Highway 159.  The route will climb through Echo Canyon, follow some of the established trails on the plateau above the northern canyons of Blue Diamond Hill, then descend through Skull Canyon to the valley.  The hike has a small amount of scrambling and the pace will be set faster than normal due to the impending heat.  Those who wish to carpool from Red Rock Casino should leave there at 7:15 AM to join the coordinator at the trailhead .  The hike will start promptly at 7:30 AM from the Cowboy Stables.  GPS coordinates for this meeting spot is 36 degrees 07'17.02" N by 115 degrees 26'01.22" W.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, May 23 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Join the other early morning risers for a moderate trek in the area of Red Rock Canyon.  The actual destination will be determined at Red Rock Casino where the group will assemble.  Normal parameters are between 4 and 6 miles which should allow the group to finish under three hours.  Departure will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Friday, May 23 - Grand Staircase & Guardian Angel Loop.  Starting from Red Springs Picnic Area the group will climb Grand Staircase at the south end of the Calico Hills and descend on the back side to a wash below the Calico I turnout.  Heading north, they will navigate an inward scrambling route to the wash below Calico II, then pass the angel carving on the way to the saddle in the Calico Hills, descending straight back to the Calico Basin side of the sandstone hills.  This 4-mile loop hike is rated strenuous with 90% scrambling off-trail and a total elevation gain of 1,500 feet.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Jim Billetdeaux.

Saturday, May 24 - Telephone Canyon.  Our coordinators have joined forces to offer two hikes starting at the same time from the same location.  Kay will be taking the more adventurous route from Robbers' Roost, crossing the upper section of Telephone Canyon and heading uphill to a horse trough and on to a ridge with unencumbered views of Angel Peak.  This loop route is about 4 or 5 miles in length, has some steep sections of trail, and is rated moderate.  Chris will be taking the other group on a point-to-point hike from Robbers' Roost to a pullout along Kyle Canyon Road that is essentially downhill the entire way.  This hike is 4 miles in length and is rated easy to moderate.  Ideally, we will be able to get all the participants to the start of the hike and have enough vehicles at the end of the point-o-point hike to avoid car shuttling.  Hikers will assemble at Santa Fe Station and pick their hike, departing at 8:30 AM.  Coordinators - Kay Blackwell and Chris Dempsey.

Sunday, May 25 - Sawmill Wiggle Route.  This hike will take the Sawmill Trail to the next level!  Adding to the original hike along the higher ridge, the trail turns off to the left and begins switch-backing down to a forest road utilizing part of the large network of equestrian trails.  The group will cross Lee Canyon Road (Highway 156) and drop down into lower Lee Canyon, hike up the wide wash passing a narrow slot in the rocks, and cross back over the highway to the trailhead.  Expect a reasonably fast pace for this moderately strenuous outing that will cover a distance of 6 miles with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet.  Meet at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Tuesday, May 27 - Cockscomb Peak.  After a day off for Memorial Day our tough Tuesday crowd will be itching for a challenge.  They will get one on this strenuous 6-mile hike in Kyle Canyon.  The start of the hike will be at the Trail Canyon trailhead and will follow a Class 1 trail for the first 2.5 miles.  At that point the outing becomes a scramble over Class 3 terrain with exposure en route to the summit.  There is lots of loose rock through these steep sections and some crumbling limestone that needs to be navigated with extreme care.  Vertical gain is around 2,000 feet.  The group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Tuesday, May 27 - Avalanche Canyon.  Somewhat less intimidating on this Tuesday after Memorial Day is this 5-mile partial loop hike that visits a canyon decimated by a large avalanche back in 2005.  Since there are no official trails into the canyon, much of the debris consisting of downed trees and boulders still lies where the rush of snow pushed it that year.  This version of the trek winds up beneath the cave near Mary Jane Falls and follows the regular trail down through a series of switchbacks.  Gross elevation gain will be around 1,200 feet and a strenuous rating applies.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Wednesday, May 28 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike with Doug.  Participants for this early 4 to 6-mile outing in the Red Rock Canyon area can expect a moderate hike lasting something under three hours.  Doug may show up with a recommendation of a trail or the group may decide at the assembly point what the destination should be.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Wednesday, May 28 - Raintree via North Loop Trail.  One of our standard summer hikes is this moderately strenuous 6-mile out-and-back hike that follows North Loop Trail from its eastern trailhead off Deer Creek Road.  Elevation gain for the hike is 1,500 feet with half of that coming on the slope  covered by a dozen switchbacks above a mid-ridge meadows.  Come and find out what a 3,000 year old tree looks like and why we hike to it so often.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Richard Hansen.

Thursday, May 29 - Fletcher Peak.  The group will be doing the standard route to one of the peaks surrounding Kyle Canyon on this out-and-back hike of 7.5 miles.  The route is identical to the one of the previous day going to Raintree, except it cuts over an adjoining ridge about a quarter mile before getting to the old Bristlecone tree.  The faint and sporadic trail leading to the top provides some great views of the distant peaks in several directions.  Plan on meeting the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Thursday, May 29 - Lee Canyon Narrows.  This area of lower Lee Canyon is often referred to as Champion Canyon, but Champion is really only the name of the old gravel road running along the bottom of the canyon.  This largely out-and-back hike will follow sections of the road and also include a bypass of a narrow twenty foot slot in a cliff that has given rise to the name of the hike.  Distance will be about 5 miles and there is 700 feet of elevation change involved.  The hike itself will start at the north end of Highway 158 near the junction with Lee Canyon Road.  The meeting location is at Santa Fe Station and the departure time is 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Gail Surgent.

Friday, May 30 - Blue Diamond Canyon #1.  Avoiding the heat of the day will be one of the main objectives for this short hike into the first canyon on the south end of Blue Diamond Hill.  It's not a long hike at around 3 miles but it does involve a considerable amount of scrambling, resulting in an overall rating of moderately strenuous.  There is a good chance of seeing owls in the canyon.  The return will most likely be along the ridge to the immediate north.  The main assembly point will be the gravel parking lot on the right side of the entrance road to the community of Blue Diamond just past the bridge.  Starting time for the hike will be at 6:00 AM so participants carpooling from Red Rock Casino will have to leave there about twenty minutes before that.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Friday, May 30 - Ash Meadows.  Here is a chance to do an easy to moderate loop hike in the vicinity of Calico Basin on the east side of the Calico Hills.  The group will start off from Red Springs Picnic Area heading toward Five Stop Hill, but will only do the first section of climb from Ash Creek before turning left onto another trail.  This trail leads toward the mouth of Ash Canyon where a break will take place in a shaded area close to Ash Springs.  The return will be along the base of the sandstone hills.  Elevation gain is probably only a couple hundred feet and distance is around 3 or 4 miles.  Departure of the group from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, May 31 - Big Falls Overlook.  This strenuous out-and-back hike utilizes Trail Canyon to access North Loop Trail, then turns left heading toward Mount Charleston on North Loop Trail.  A broad ledge a couple thousand feet above the floor of Kyle Canyon provides a dramatic view of Big Falls and the folded strata that make up much of the south ridge leading to Charleston.  There has been an interpretive sign at this spot and it might still be there.  Total distance of the hike is around 8 miles.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, May 31 - Fletcher Canyon.  This moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike into a side canyon draining much of the southern end of Mummy Mountain is one of the classics.  Much of the route is on established trail with about a third of a mile each way in a very picturesque slot canyon that narrows down to less than five foot width toward the turn around point.  The terminal end where the snack break will occur is at Obstacle Rock.  If interested in this typical Saturday jaunt meet the group at Santa Fe Station with a departure time of 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Diane Dempsey.
