October 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  October is our transition month from the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains (usually referred to as the Mount Charleston area) to the lower elevations of Red Rock Canyon and there are different assembly points for hikes in each of those areas.  Information regarding those locations and driving directions is detailed immediately below.

Mount Charleston Area.  For hikes north of Las Vegas the assembly point will be at the Santa Fe Station Casino.  This property has two parking garages, one on the north end of the casino close to Highway 95 and the Rancho exit and one on the southeast side closer to the intersection of Rancho and Lone Mountain Road.  We always use the third level of the southeast parking garage as our meeting location.  This garage can be accessed from Lone Mountain Road traveling in either direction at the entrance near the theater.  It can also be accessed from Rancho.  If traveling northbound on Rancho turn in at the signalized casino entrance and turn left to access the garage.  If traveling southbound on Rancho pass the signal and turn right at the entrance providing direct access to the garage.  This second option is used if you are getting to Santa Fe using either northbound or southbound Highway 95 and taking the Rancho exit.  Drive up to the third level and turn left - we will be meeting right there.

Red Rock Canyon Area.  Our assembly point for hikes in Red Rock Canyon, Cottonwood Valley, and the west side of the escarpment is at the Red Rock Casino on Charleston Boulevard just east of 215.  To access the meeting point, turn into the casino property at the signalized intersection directly across from Canyon Pointe, turn right directly in front of the casino, and immediately turn right into the outdoor lot.  If traveling east on Charleston from 215 you can turn right at the first entrance and then make an immediate left into the lot.  The group will be parking at the north end of the lot along Charleston Boulevard.  For hikes located in Cottonwood Valley and west there will be a secondary meeting location available for individuals coming from the south side of Las Vegas.  That will be at the gas station located at the intersection of Highways 159 and 160 (Blue Diamond Road).  This will be a quick stop that will occur about twenty-five minutes after the regular departure from Red Rock Casino.

Times indicated for each hike are departure times and are strictly observed.  Usually the group will begin arriving as much as one-half hour prior to the scheduled departure time.

Please pay attention to the difficulty ratings for each hike offered and do not attempt hikes that are beyond your abilities.  New hikers without recent hiking experience MUST begin with the 8:30 AM Saturday hikes as these are the only hikes that guarantee a fairly leisurely pace.  Strenuous Tuesday hikes are only open to existing members who are experienced hikers.  Be sure to wear appropriate clothing, footwear, and hats and bring sunscreen, water, electrolyte replacement fluids as needed, and food or snacks for each outing.

Questions regarding general information should be directed to Chris Dempsey at dempseylv@aol.com or by telephone at (702) 823-2355.  Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the listed coordinator.  Refer to the club roster for contact information.

Wednesday, October 1 - Upper Bristlecone Trail.  This moderate out-and-back trail hike is close to 5 miles in total distance with 500 feet of elevation gain.  It will cover that part of the trail between the ski resort and Bonanza Trail.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Thursday, October 2 - Stanley B/Fletcher Canyons.  A strenuous 6-mile loop hike that starts from the parking area for the Fletcher Canyon Trail heading along the wash and climbing past the mine shafts in Stanley B.  There is significant scrambling involved, some loose terrain, and an elevation gain of 1,500 feet.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, October 3 - Ash Canyon Overlook.  A moderate 3-mile out-and-back hike with 300 feet of elevation gain starting from Sandstone Quarry.  While mostly trail, there is some minor scrambling involved and a slight bit of exposure.  Group departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, October 4 - Fossil Beds of the DNWR.  An exploratory hike in the Yucca Peak area of the Desert National Wildlife Range near the Corn Creek Visitor Center which passes an abundance of fossils.  Total distance is around 3 or 4 miles with 500 feet of elevation gain and a moderate rating.  High clearance vehicles are necessary to negotiate Mormon Well Road.  Meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Saturday, October 4 - Bristlecone Loop.  The full Bristlecone Trail at the top of Lee Canyon is a moderate 6-mile loop with 700 feet of elevation gain.  This leisurely hike will start from the upper trailhead and proceed counter clockwise.  The hike should take as much as four hours with a snack break along the way.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Judy Warner.

Sunday, October 5 - Red Cap.  This strenuous 3-mile loop hike to the highest point in the Calico Hills involves a significant amount of scrambling and use of hands.  The climb to the top of the formation will be from the east side of the sandstone hills, finishing through a narrow seam.  The return will be along the traditional northwest route usually used for the approach.  The assembled group will leave at 8:00 AM from Red Rock Casino.  Coordinator - Tony Fountain.

Monday, October 6 - Conglomerate Gardens.  This moderate 6-mile loop hike includes two miles going out and four miles coming back in due to the winding nature of the trail.  Elevation gain is around 700 feet.  No shade is available for this desert hike located on Blue Diamond Hill starting from the Cowboy Stables parking lot.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, October 7 - La Madre Peak.  The assault on this peak on the north side of Red Rock Canyon will actually be done from the Kyle Canyon side.  There are no trails, so the entire hike is cross country and up limestone slabs.  Also, high clearance 4-wheel drive vehicles are essential.  If the vehicles are capable of crossing two significant washes and reaching a primitive camping area, the out-and-back hike would be 5.5 miles with 2,400 feet of elevation gain.  If the vehicles are forced to stop before crossing the first wash the distance would be 9 miles with 3,000 feet of gain.  A loop option at the top to La Padre Peak would add an additional mile and 700 feet of gain.  In any event, this is a very strenuous hike.  Qualified participants should meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Jerry Thomas.

Wednesday, October 8 - Fern Canyon.  Otherwise referred to as North Fork Pine Creek Canyon, this destination requires pretty good bouldering skills to reach the midpoint of the canyon that will constitute the turn around point.  Most of the route for this 4 to 5-mile out-and-back hike is on trail, but the level of boulder scrambling raises the rating for this hike to moderately strenuous.  The group will leave from Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Thursday, October 9 - White Rock Hills Loop.  This popular 6.4 mile trail hike encircles the two peaks of the White Rock Hills at the north end of Red Rock Canyon.  It is rated moderate and has a net elevation gain of 900 feet.  This outing will be done counter clockwise from Willow Springs so that the warmer desert side of the mountains is done first.  Departure time from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Friday, October 10 - North Fork of Main Fork Pine Creek.  From the description provided this looks like a repeat of the Fern Canyon hike two days previously.  The information lists this as a 5-mile hike with lots of scrambling and a moderately strenuous rating.  Those carpooling from Red Rock Casino should leave there at 6:50 AM and will meet the coordinator at the Pine Creek Trail parking lot for a 7:30 AM start to the hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, October 11 - Brownstone Canyon.  This strenuous loop hike of about 9 miles and 1,400 feet of elevation gain involves a significant amount of off-trail terrain with a general split between boulder scrambling and trekking uphill in gravel washes.  The main feature of the hike is a registered pictograph wall on the edge of the named canyon where the snack break will occur.  Group departure from Red Rock Casino will occur at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator  Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, October 11 - Fossil Ridge.  This moderate 4-mile hike will be conducted along a Figure 8 route from the Cowboy Stables parking lot.  The group will turn right immediately through the gate and proceed to the edge of Echo Canyon, turning right and heading south along the canyon.  After completing the top loop portion they will follow the lower portion of the trail along the top of the canyon and descend Blue Diamond Hill toward the main corral and return on the gravel road.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Diane Dempsey.

Sunday, October 12 - White Rock Springs Peak.  Rated moderately strenuous, this 4 to 5-mile hike will start from the lower parking area at the start of the gravel road at Mile Marker 6 of the scenic drive.  The climb to the peak involves quite a bit of scrambling and the descent, which also involves scrambling, will be on the eastern edge of the mountain.  Total elevation gain is approaching 1,000 feet.  Join the group at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, October 13 - Escarpment Base Trail.  Combing parts or all of four connecting trails on the west side of Red Rock Canyon, this moderate trail hike will proceed in a northerly direction starting from the Arnight trailhead and finishing at the Lost Creek trailhead.  Total distance for the point-to-point hike is about 5.5 miles with an elevation gain of 700 feet.  Extra vehicles will be required for the car shuttle.  Departure will be at 7:30 AM from Red Rock Casino.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, October 14 - Angel Peak.  Paving on Kyle Canyon Road at the end of the previous month forced a cancellation of this hike on September 30, so we will try it again.  The peak contains an instrument array dome and sits above the Spring Mountain Youth Camp.  Estimated distance for the moderately strenuous out-and-back hike is 7 or 8 miles with 1,500 feet of elevation gain.  If interested in bagging another peak despite boring terrain then meet the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Wednesday, October 15 - Sandstone to White Rock Springs.  This moderate 6-mile out-and-back hike will cover the section of the Grand Circle Trail between Sandstone Quarry and the spring at the base of the White Rock Hills.  It is all on trail with the exception of the gravel road leaving the scenic drive at Mile Marker 6.  After a break at the springs the group will return along the same route.  Elevation gain is about 800 feet.  The group will leave at 8:00 AM from Red Rock Casino.  Coordinator - Tony Fountain.

Thursday, October 16 - Mountain Spring Peak.  Starting from the gravel pullout near Mountain Spring Summit, the group will head up a gravel service road and follow a series of trails to the top of the peak and down the other side to an overlook above Black Velvet Canyon.  This moderately strenuous out-and-back hike covers a distance of 6 miles and has a 1,200 foot elevation gain.  There is some exposure but it can be completely avoided by those wishing to do so.  Departure from Red Rock will be at 7:00 AM.  There will be a short stop at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 about 7:25 AM for any south side participants.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, October 17 - Ice Box Canyon.  This strenuous out-and-back hike will be around 4 miles and include lots of scrambling as the intended route goes well beyond the normal stopping point below the seasonal waterfall.  The group assembled at Red Rock Casino should depart around 7:25 AM to meet the coordinator at the regular Ice Box parking lot, where the hike will begin at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, October 18 - Calico I Moenkopi Loop.  The only hike scheduled so far for this Saturday will be the leisurely option, which is an easy to moderate loop starting from the Visitor Center in Red Rock Canyon.  The loop route covers a distance of 3 miles and has a minimal elevation gain of about 200 feet.  Departure time from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Sunday, October 19 - Cottonwood Valley Loop.  A moderate hike of 6 miles with around 700 feet of elevation gain will start from the dirt parking lot used for the short Badger Pass hike.  This all trail hike will start towards Mount Potosi and reach Cottonwood Pass, then turn back down Red Canyon on the Deadhorse Trail.  The pace will be moderate.  Those carpooling from Red Rock Casino should leave there at 6:45 AM.  The coordinator will be at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 and can be joined there by other south side participants.  The assembled group will depart for the hike at 7:15 AM.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Monday, October 20 - Keystone Thrust Loop.  This moderately strenuous loop hike will start from the gravel pullout at Mile Marker 6 and proceed up the gravel road to the White Rock Springs parking lot, then head around the north end of Cactus Hill and connect with Keystone Thrust Canyon.  The downward scrambling through the canyon is fairly intense and long pants are recommended to avoid getting scratched by the brush and rocks.  Distance is about 4 miles.  Meet the other participants at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Tuesday, October 21 - Turtlehead Peak Eastern Approach.  This very strenuous hike to the mountain on the northeast side of Red Rock Canyon will follow a route into Gateway Canyon and approach the peak from the east side.  There is minimal exposure along the way but a significant portion of the trek involves scrambling over steep terrain without benefit of a trail.  The return will be down the regular trail.  Distance is about 6 miles with 2,500 feet of elevation gain.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Allen.

Wednesday, October 22 - White Rock Hills Loop.  One of the most requested hikes in Red Rock Canyon is this moderate 6.4-mile loop around the two cream colored peaks at the north end of the canyon.  This trek will begin at Willow Springs Picnic Area and proceed in a clockwise direction, with a snack break at the highest point of the trail.  The group will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Ed Matulis.

Thursday, October 23 - Krafft Mountain Traverse.  The group will change from the normal direction for this hike as it will be conducted in an east to west direction, meaning the steepest part of the trek will be on the ascent.  With quite a bit of Class 3 scrambling, this 5-mile trek involving 1,500 feet of elevation gain will be rated strenuous.  There is also a bit of exposure through some sections of the route.  Departure will be at 7:30 AM from Red Rock Casino.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Friday, October 24 - Dale's Trail.  The out-and-back trek along the middle section of the trail system below the escarpment will cover a total distance of just over 5 miles.  Along the way there is a lot of rolling terrain and the probable snack break will occur in the vicinity of Skull Rock.  Rating is moderate and the gross elevation gain is something less than 1,000 feet.  The assembled group will leave from Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Saturday, October 25 - Gray Cap.  This ascent of the peak in the sandstone formations southeast of Turtlehead will entail one of the more adventurous potential routes, starting at the parking area on the north side of Calico Basin and climbing through Gray Fox Canyon.  Roughly 5 miles in total distance with 1,800 feet of elevation gain, this hike is rated strenuous because of the significant amount of scrambling involved.  A departure time of 7:30 AM from Red Rock Casino will be in effect.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Saturday, October 25 - Calico Tanks.  The leisurely Saturday alternative is one of the signature hikes offered on regulation trails in Red Rock Canyon.  With a variety of moderate surface conditions it covers a total out-and-back distance of 3 miles while climbing about 700 feet.  The view of southern Las Vegas, Lake Mead, and the Arizona mountains from the terminal point is really astounding.  Participants for this hike will assemble at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, October 26 - Bird Spring Ridges.  This moderately strenuous hike of 6 miles with around 1,500 feet of elevation gain will start from the dirt parking area also used for the short version of Badger Pass.  After crossing Badger Pass the route heads up a series of ridges to the high point of the small range, then connects with the Deadhorse Trail passing through Red Valley on the way back to the vehicles.  Early assembly will be at Red Rock Casino with the group leaving at 7:00 AM.  Final assembly point will be the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160, where they will meet the coordinator and any other south side participants for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Sunday, October 26 - Windy Peak.  Starting from the gravel pullout near Mountain Spring Summit the route starts up a gravel service road and connects with a series of faint trails to get to the point where the limestone of the back ridge transitions onto the sandstone formation of the peak.  Total distance for the out-and-back hike is 5 miles with 1,400 feet of elevation gain and some exposure.  The resulting rating is moderately strenuous.  This group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 7:30 AM and make a brief stop at the gas station on Highways 159 and 160 about 7:55 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, October 27 - Rubber Ducky Yucca.  Elevation gain is only about 600 feet for this moderate loop trek in Cottonwood Valley north of Highway 160 and the total distance is about 6 miles.  There is some surprisingly good scenery along the way in some shallow canyons and a ridge with excellent views and there is the yucca.  Those interested should gather at Red Rock Casino for a 7:30 AM departure.  An additional stop will be made at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 about 7:55 AM to meet up with any south side participants.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, October 28 - Two North Peaks.  A traditional Halloween outing, the trek to both the limestone and sandstone versions of peaks with the same name will cover a distance of 12 miles and gain around 3,000 feet.  The early and late portion is out-and-back along Rocky Gap Road and the central portion is a loop involving scrambling and steep trail.  Overall, this hike is rated strenuous.  Anyone going ahead of the coordinator will need to carry radios and wait for the group at the finish.  The assembled group will leave Red Rock Casino at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Wednesday, October 29 - Arnight/Upper Pine Creek Loop.  From the Red Rock scenic drive exit the route will head cross country to the interior Oak Creek parking area, follow the Arnight Trail into Pine Creek Canyon, then do the upper loop through both drainages before returning past the Wilson foundation and back to the Arnight Trail.  This moderate hike will cover a total distance of about 6 miles and there is minimal overall elevation gain.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Roger Hembree.

Thursday, October 30 - Little Zion.  Yet another hike on the back side of the escarpment, the moderately strenuous out-and-back route covers a distance of 6 miles and gains 1,600 feet getting to a unique sandstone area above Bonnie Springs.  Terrain includes scrambling up an irregular wash and across sandstone slabs.  High clearance vehicles will be necessary to access the trailhead.  The main group will depart from Red Rock Casino at 7:00 AM and pick up south side participants at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160 about 7:25 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Friday, October 31 - Blue Diamond Canyon #3 Loop.  This moderately strenuous hike will begin from the community of Blue Diamond and proceed into the third canyon on the hill across the way, topping out on a plateau near the mining operation.  There is significant scrambling on this climb.  The ridge between the first two canyons on Blue Diamond Hill will be used for the return.  Total distance is around 5 miles with 1,000 feet of gain.  Early departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:30 AM and that group will drive to the gravel parking area on the right side of the entrance road to Blue Diamond where they will meet the coordinator for an 8:00 AM start to the hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Friday, October 31 - Nevada Sesquicentennial Hike.  Celebrating a milestone of statehood for Nevada will be part of the activities on this moderate to moderately strenuous hike in Lovell Canyon.  The regular route for this hike covers 5.5 miles but there is an optional section that would bring the total up to 7 miles.  This is a joint hike with Lone Mountain Hiking Club, whose members will be meeting at Desert Vista Community Center in Sun City Summerlin for a 7:45 AM departure.  The ABF contingent will assemble and leave from Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM and join the earlier group and any south side participants at the gas station at Highways 159 and 160 for a combined departure at 8:30 AM.  One caveat - those participating will have to endure our coordinator's recitation and possibly sing the state song "Home Means Nevada".  Coordinator - Ann Hoskin.

September 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  Hikes during the month of September will be split between the Red Rock Canyon area (generally early morning hikes) and the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains (usually referred to as the Mount Charleston area).  Information regarding assembly locations and directions to those locations is immediately below.

Red Rock Canyon Area.  Our assembly point for hikes in Red Rock Canyon, Cottonwood Valley, and the west side of the escarpment is at the Red Rock Casino on Charleston Boulevard just east of 215.  To access the meeting spot, turn into the casino property at the signalized intersection directly across from Canyon Pointe, turn right directly in front of the casino, and immediately turn right into the outdoor lot.  If traveling east on Charleston from 215 you can turn right at the first entrance and then make an immediate left into the lot.  The group will be parking at the north end of the lot along Charleston Boulevard.

Mount Charleston Area.  For hikes north of Las Vegas in either the Mount Charleston area or in the Sheep Mountains the assembly point will be at the Santa Fe Station Casino. If traveling northbound on Rancho turn in at the casino entrance signalized intersection and turn left to access the garage.  If traveling southbound on Rancho pass the signal and turn right at the entrance that directly accesses the garage.  This second option is used if you are getting to Santa Fe using either northbound  or southbound Highway 95 and taking the Rancho exit.  Drive up to the third level and turn left - we will be meeting right there.

Strenuous Tuesday hikes are only open to qualified experienced hikers.  Be sure to wear appropriate clothing, footwear, and hats and bring sunscreen, water, electrolyte replacement fluids as needed, and food and snacks for each outing.

Questions regarding general information should be directed to Chris Dempsey at dempseylv@aol.com or by telephone at (702) 823-2355.  Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the listed coordinator.  Refer to the club roster for contact information.

Monday, September 1 - Angel Pass Balloon Scramble.  On Labor Day it's about work and a workout is what you will get on this 4-mile adventure in the Calico Hills.  Everyone will probably recognize the starting point at Red Springs Picnic Area, the trail along the east side of the Calico Hills, and the ascent to the saddle at Angel Pass.  From there the going gets tough as the route heads north along the west side of the ridge before dropping through a narrow crack referred to as "The Squeeze".  Much of the route involves scrambling and there is some mild exposure along with some potential route finding, so the difficulty rating should be at least strenuous.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Allen.

Tuesday, September 2 - Willow Peak.  Some very wild terrain is involved on this very strenuous 11-mile out-and-back hike with 3,000 feet of elevation gain.  Start by heading up the north end of the Bonanza Trail through nearly sixty switchbacks to the top of the ridge looking down on Pahrump.  Turning right (north) along the ridge, the trail almost disappears as the route heads over and around a number of rock outcroppings before settling in to an almost leisurely stroll over the last quarter mile to the peak.  High clearance vehicles are recommended for the rough gravel road past Cold Creek.  The group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Jerry Thomas.

Tuesday, September 2 - Big Falls Overlook.  Our coordinator has billed this strenuous 9-mile out-and-back hike along Trail Canyon Trail and North Loop Trail as a training hike for the Mount Charleston assault on September 21.  The farthest point along the route involving over 3,000 feet of elevation gain where a break will occur is an open spot above the cliffs with a great view across Upper Kyle Canyon to the plateau above Big Falls.  An old interpretive sign at this location talks about the folded layers above the falls below the opposite ridge.  This group will also depart from Santa Fe Station at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Sylvie Courtemarsh.

Wednesday, September 3 - Sawmill Exploratory.  By the time we actually get to this hike much of the exploration may have been taken out, but it still should prove to be an interesting jaunt.  Expect a total distance between 6 and 8 miles with less than 1,000 feet of elevation change, with much of this occurring on the return section of what will hopefully be a loop route.  All of the terrain covered will be north of Lee Canyon Road and with the entire hike on trail should carry a moderate rating.  Meet the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Thursday, September 4 - The Sisters Spur Road Exploratory.  Our coordinator asks the question "So why is this called the Sisters Spur Road if it doesn't offer a trail up to Black Sister?"  Okay, so she hasn't come up with the answer.  In any event the out-and-back route will cover a total distance of about 4 miles getting to Black Sister from the starting point.  With 2,000 feet of elevation gain this outing will carry a strenuous rating.  The group will assemble at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, September 5 - First Creek.  Here is one of those traditional easy to moderate Red Rock hikes that is completely suitable for those individuals wanting a leisurely pace.  The out-and-back route is a total of 4 miles and the elevation gain is probably around 300 feet.  After stopping at the pool below the seasonal waterfall, participants will cross the creek above the waterfall and rejoin the main trail some distance toward the canyon.  The turn around point for the break will occur at a boulder waterfall that unfortunately seldom sees flowing water.  Group departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, September 6 - ABF Club Picnic & Hikes.  The club picnic will occur this year at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.  Several flyers have been sent out regarding the picnic.  The primary hike that day will start from the park at 8:15 AM and will pass the lake and proceed up Sandstone Canyon for some boulder scrambling in the drainage.  With a total distance of 4 miles the trek should carry a moderate rating and will be coordinated by Nancy Moore.  Those wishing to carpool from Red Rock Casino should depart from there at 7:45 AM.  Chris Dempsey will be taking a group on a couple of the official trails closer to the ranch that will include a stop at the cemetery.  Total distance will be 3 to 4 miles with an easy to moderate rating and an 8:30 AM start.  Ann Cronin will be coordinating an easy nature hike of about 1 or 2 miles that will start from the park at 9:00 AM.  The grills will be lit around 10:00 AM and the food will be served around noon.  The club is furnishing the food and drinking water but participants are responsible for other beverages.  You must RSVP with Pat Stutts at t1snook@yahoo.com or at (702) 256-6541 by August 29 and pay a refundable picnic fee of $5.  The club will also reimburse entrance fees to the park for those who carpool.  Overall coordinator - Pat Stutts.

Sunday, September 7 - Blue Diamond Ridges.  This moderate early morning hike will take place on the hill across from the Red Rock Canyon entrance.  The loop route will cover a distance up to 7 miles and involve an elevation gain close to 1,000 feet.  Temperature increases during the morning may cause the route to get shortened a bit if it becomes necessary.  Participants can carpool from Red Rock Casino, leaving there at 5:30 AM, or drive directly to the Cowboy Stables along Highway 159 for a 5:45 AM start of the hike.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Sunday, September 7 - Five Mile Campsite.  This strenuous out-and-back hike should be 10 miles in total with more than 3,000 feet of elevation gain. Following Trail Canyon up to the North Loop Trail, the route turns left and continues up. The break will occur on a saddle at a large campsite where views of Lee Canyon and the Spring Mountain Divide can be enjoyed.  If interested in going on this trek you can meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, September 8 - Red Cap/Calico Tank Scramble.  Starting at Sandstone Quarry the group will drop into the wash bearing east and boulder scramble to the top of the northern end of the Calico Hills.  On the return leg the group will descend through one of the drainages back to the Calico Tanks Trail, head up the canyon to the sandstone slab above the main tank, and return via the regular trail.  The 4-mile hike is rated moderately strenuous with some mild exposure and a fair amount of scrambling.  If interested, join the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Steve Allen.

Tuesday, September 9 - Mummy's Nose.  Talk about steep - this very strenuous 5-mile out-and-back hike gains 2,800 feet of elevation as it climbs from Lee Canyon Road to the feature along the main ridge line on the head portion of the anatomy.  There is a little trail to start but quite a bit of scrambling and the average grade is about twenty percent.  Participants will experience some exposure along the route to the top.  The group will meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Tuesday, September 9 - Base of Lee Peak.  Continuing to extend the distances on the preparatory hikes in anticipation of Mount Charleston on September 21 will find the anticipated destination for this hike to be the cutoff from North Loop Trail for the scramble route to Lee Peak.  As before, the hike starts up Trail Canyon Trail and turns left on North Loop Trail.  Total distance is about 12 miles for this strenuous out-and-back hike and the elevation gain is around 3,400 feet.  This group will also depart from Santa Fe Station at 7:00 AM, so make sure you have the right hike before registering.  Coordinator - Sylvie Courtemarsh.

Wednesday, September 10 - Calico II Squeeze Loop.  This hike starts at the Calico II Overlook, drops into the fault canyon, and turns into the side canyon leading to Angel Pass Saddle.  The group will then ascend through a very steep drainage, cross a ridge line, and descend toward the back side of the main Calico Tank.  The narrow crack from the September 1 hike comes into play again following another climb with a final descent back to Angel Pass.  There is some serious scrambling with minimal exposure and there could be some route finding required.  Total distance is only about 2 miles but the significant amount of scrambling results in a strenuous rating.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Allen.

Thursday, September 11 - Raintree via Trail Canyon.  The only hike going to the 3,000 year old Bristlecone Pine on the east flank of Mummy's Toe this month is this effort starting at Trail Canyon trailhead.  Total distance for the moderately strenuous out-and-back hike is 7.7 miles with an elevation gain of 2,200 feet.  The open stretch of North Loop Trail above Fletcher Canyon on the way to the tree provides some of the most dramatic scenery in the Mount Charleston area.  Come and experience it by meeting the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, September 12 - Gypsum Peak.  Total elevation gain is around 800 feet on this trek to the top of the somewhat isolated hill just southeast of the community of Blue Diamond.  The route climbs steeply up a use trail on the west face of the hill with some scrambling required to reach the very top, where participants will be treated to a good view of the southern half of Las Vegas.  After a snack break the group will return along the same route.  Total distance is a little less than 3 miles with a moderate rating.  The main assembly point will be at the gravel parking lot just past the bridge on the entrance road to Blue Diamond, from which the hike will start at 6:00 AM.  Those carpooling from Red Rock Casino should leave that location by 5:35 AM.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, September 13 - Mormon Girls Camp.  Rated as moderate, this 4 to 5-mile loop hike starts through the Deer Creek Picnic Area and passes a number of historic locations, gaining about 700 feet, on the way to a short rest break at the top of a ridge.  Starting down, the group will encounter a brief section of off-trail scrambling before arriving at the camp.  Anyone who likes a challenge can try their skills on a rope bridge across a drainage.  A last obstacle is descending on a short but very steep slope aided by another rope.  The assembled group will be leaving from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, September 13 - Mary Jane Falls.  The leisurely hike this Saturday will visit one of the major drainage sites along the north ridge between Mount Charleston and Mummy Mountain.  The moderate out-and-back trek gains 920 feet, most of it in a section of twelve switchbacks, as it reaches the base of the broad waterfall that has been carrying at least a trickle for much of the summer.  Total distance is 3 miles.  Those who feel somewhat more adventurous can visit a neat shallow cave set into the cliff walls just beyond the waterfall.  Departure for this group from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Helmut DeCandia.

Sunday, September 14 - Devil's Thumb.  The last training hike before Mount Charleston the following Sunday will find the group starting at the Trail Canyon trailhead and passing the Big Falls Overlook and Lee Peak that were destinations for hikes earlier this month.  Total out-and-back distance will be 13 miles with 3,700 feet of elevation gain, resulting in a strenuous rating.  The turn-around point, where the main snack break will take place, is at a rock pinnacle outcropping located at the end of the ridge that constitutes the Thumb.  If interested meet at Santa Fe Station for a 6:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, September 15 - Telephone Canyon.  No spotting of vehicles will be necessary for this moderate 7-mile hike as we will be following a loop route starting from the lowest access point along Kyle Canyon Road near the police substation.  The route will proceed in a counter clockwise direction, climbing up through the canyon and returning on the west side of a ridge paralleling Highway 156.  This trail provides extended views of the new Lower Kyle Canyon Visitor Center and the road construction zone that has plagued us for most of the summer.  Overall elevation gain should be around 800 feet.  Meeting place is the Santa Fe Station with an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, September 16 - Cockscomb Peak.  Only the fittest of our club members should show up for this intense outing to a narrow peak in the upper sections of Kyle Canyon.  Although only about 6 miles in total distance, this out-and-back hike starting along Trail Canyon Trail gains about 2,000 feet and is rated very strenuous.  The tricky part comes after advancing along the ridge extending to the south from the junction with North Loop Trail.  A descent through a crack in a cliff face and the succeeding climb up a rocky approach to the peak both involve some rather serious exposure.  If you are one of those hardy souls who seek adventure, show up at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Steve Anderson.

Wednesday, September 17 - Bristlecone Loop.  For this moderate 6-mile outing the group will be starting at the lower trailhead parking lot and proceeding in a clockwise direction.  This means the paved road portion of the hike comes first and the last two miles or so will be downhill along the Forest Service gravel road.  Following the official route set up by the U. S. Forest service means there won't be any surprises.  Elevation gain is about 750 feet and the snack break will occur at the normal spot at the junction with Bonanza Trail.  Pace will be somewhat leisurely.  If this is your cup of tea join the other participants at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Thursday, September 18 - White Rock Springs Peak.  We will be shifting our attention to Red Rock Canyon for today's moderately strenuous out-and-back trek covering a distance of about 5 miles.  Instead of driving up the gravel road to the White Rock Springs parking lot, the group will start from the pullout next to the scenic drive at Mile Marker 6 and walk up the road.  There will be plenty of scrambling involved on the ascent along a ridge to the peak and also some exposure.  Participants can either stop at the eastern of the twin tops or take the somewhat treacherous route over to the western top where the sign-in box is located.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Thursday, September 18 - Pine Creek Afternoon Hike.  It is still technically summer so it could be hot for the first part of this hike in the Red Rock Canyon area.  The route will include moderate scrambling in one of the canyon forks.  The coordinator will not be at the general assembly point at Red Rock Casino, so those who gather there should organize carpools and leave there at 2:45 PM.  The actual hike will start from the Pine Creek parking lot at 3:30 PM and should take about three hours.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Friday, September 19 - Grand Staircase/Slab Rift Scramble.  Starting from Red Springs Picnic Area the group will climb onto the southern section of the Calico Hills along the route referred to as the Grand Staircase.  Heading north, they will traverse the ridge and drop into a formation known as Slab Rift.  The descent includes more scrambling down to the trail running along the eastern side of the sandstone hills.  There will be mild to moderate exposure on some parts of the hike and route finding skills may be required.  Distance is approximately 3 miles with a strenuous rating.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Allen.

Friday, September 19 - Eagle's Nest Trail.  Our coordinator hasn't actually done this hike since it was converted to an official signed trail, although he explored the area several times during the last eight years, so those who have done it may be asked for their expertise. The hike starts at Fletcher Trail near the current Mount Charleston Visitor Center and turns off to the right about a half mile later.  The area we will traverse is below the cliffs at the south end of Fletcher Peak.  Distance is about 3 to 4 miles, there is minimal elevation gain, and the rating should be easy to moderate.  Join the group at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, September 20 - Trail Canyon/Stanley B Canyon.  A bit of exploration might be included on this strenuous 6-mile point-to-point hike that has about 1,400 feet of elevation gain on the way up Trail Canyon.  From the junction of that trail and North Loop Trail the group will head out on Cockscomb Ridge, make a Class 3 descent down a chute, trek across the ridge below the comb, and intersect with the ridge leading to the saddle above Stanley B.  About half of the hike involves scrambling and bushwhacking over steep terrain and scree.  Vehicles will be needed at both ends of the hike.  The group will depart from Santa Fe Station at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, September 20 - Champion Road Loop.  Starting from the Sawmill Picnic Area the group will cross Highway 156 and follow a gravel road to the bottom of Lower Lee Canyon.  Using the gravel Champion Road they will pass a primitive campsite area, ascending as far as Deer Creek Road.  From there the route heads into the main drainage in the canyon and follows that back to the entry point.  Gross elevation gain is about 700 feet for this easy to moderate 3.5-mile hike.  Pace will be leisurely to accommodate the general membership.  Meet the rest of the group at Santa Fe Station for an 8:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, September 21 - Mount Charleston.  This could be the last time this year that our club schedules a hike to the highest point in southern Nevada.  Perhaps by 2016 we might once again incorporate South Loop Trail as an access route, but this year we are limited to Trail Canyon and North Loop Trails.  Net elevation gain is 4,200 feet and change, but rolling terrain along the upper ridge adds perhaps 500 more feet to that total.  Distance is about 17 miles and the overall rating is very strenuous.  If you have the stamina and the desire to attack this massive peak one more time, meet the rest of the group at Santa Fe Station for a 5:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Sunday, September 21 - Blue Diamond Canyon 4B.  Meanwhile, back at the ranch we will be offering a short hike into a slot canyon on the south end of Blue Diamond Hill.  It's not a long hike, around 3 to 4 miles, but it does involve a considerable amount of scrambling in the upper section of the canyon, resulting in a rating of moderately strenuous.  Be sure to look for owls along the way.  The return will be back the same way.  Those carpooling from Red Rock Casino should leave there about 5:45 AM and meet the coordinator at the gravel parking lot just past the bridge on the entrance road to the community of Blue Diamond.  The hike will begin at 6:15 AM and south side participants can drive directly to that location.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Monday, September 22 - White Rock Hills Loop.  We continue with our gradual return to the Red Rock area at the end of the summer with an old standby hike.  The loop around the two cream colored sandstone peaks at the north end of Red Rock Canyon covers a distance of 6.4 miles, gains 900 feet of net elevation, and deserves a moderate rating.  On this hike we will be starting from Willow Springs Picnic Area and proceeding counter clockwise, meaning we will be completing the desert portion of the hike first and hopefully avoiding really hot temperatures.  Departure from Red Rock Casino is at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Tuesday, September 23 - Bonanza Trail.  One of the most grueling treks in the Spring Mountains because it has two significant sections of elevation gain, this trail traverses the main ridge in the northern part of the range.  With a one-way distance of 15 miles involved, the group will split at the assembly point, swapping vehicles and having a key exchange halfway through the hike when the two groups meet for lunch.  The north to south route is slightly tougher as there is about 600 more feet of elevation gain in that direction, but overall rating is probably very strenuous no matter which way you go.  There will be a 6:30 AM departure from Santa Fe Station for this hike and high clearance vehicles will be needed to get to the northern trailhead.  Coordinators - Brian Dodd & Larry Shahan.

Wednesday, September 24 - Mormon Girls Camp.  If you weren't able to join the group on September 13 for this hike, here is another opportunity to experience the rope bridge in the girls camp.  The route will be identical, meaning a distance of 4 to 5 miles and a moderate rating.  This may also be the last time this summer you can visit the site of the first resort community in the Spring Mountains as well as historic sawmill remains.  Group assembly will be at Santa Fe Station with an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Thursday, September 25 - Krafft Mountain Traverse.  This hike is rated as strenuous as it has a considerable amount of scrambling crossing the magenta colored peak north of the community of Calico Basin from the west to the east.  Starting from Red Springs Picnic Area the route follows the trail to the top of Five Stop Hill before beginning the off-trail adventure.  Distance for the loop route will be between 5 and 6 miles with perhaps 1,500 feet of elevation gain.  Meet at Red Rock Casino for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Friday, September 26 - Cottonwood Pass Loop.  This early morning hike in South Cottonwood Valley will cover a distance of 6 miles and carry a moderate rating.  It will start from the gravel parking area south of Highway 160 that is used for the Badger Pass hike and follow a combination of dirt roads and trails toward Mount Potosi, traveling over Cottonwood Pass on the Goodsprings Road before looping back to the starting point along Deadhorse Trail.  Those carpooling from Red Rock Casino should leave there at 5:30 AM to join the coordinator and other south side participants at the gas station at the junction of Highways 159 and 160.  The combined groups will leave the gas station at 6:00 AM for the trailhead.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, September 27 - Lee Canyon/Sawmill Wiggles Loop.  This moderately strenuous loop hike starting from Mile Marker 10.5 of Lee Canyon Road is 8 miles in length and gains about 1,500 feet of elevation.  The route drops down into Lee Canyon and climbs the drainage on a trail that is still being constructed. It passes the Lee Canyon Narrows and climbs out of the canyon.  After crossing the road, and taking a break at the Sawmill Trailhead, the route connects with the multi-use trails north of the highway, generally following a gradual ridge back to the starting point.  Participants should meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Saturday, September 27 - Fletcher Canyon.  One of the most popular short hikes in the Mount Charleston area is this easy to moderate 4-mile out-and-back trek into a picturesque slot canyon on the north side of Kyle Canyon Road.  Surprisingly, this is the first time it has been included on the schedule in eight weeks.  Total elevation gain is around 600 feet and there is some very minor scrambling in the slot approaching the rest break below Obstacle Rock.  Pace will be leisurely to accommodate the general membership.  Departure of the group from Santa Fe Station will be at 8:30 AM.  Coordinator - Helmut DeCandia.

Sunday, September 28 - Deer Creek Canyon Exploratory.  A few club members have been looking forward to some cooler temperatures so they can find out whether Deer Creek Canyon is navigable, so here is the opportunity.  The expectation is that the point-to-point hike will cover close to 7 miles and will possibly be rated strenuous even though the entire route is downhill.  Participants should probably wear long pants as there could be significant brush and some scrambling.  The hike will begin at Deer Creek Picnic Area and some cars will be spotted at the finish.  The group will leave Santa Fe Station at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Monday, September 29 - Krafft Mountain Loop.  The route for this moderately strenuous 6-mile loop hike will follow the trail up Five Stop Hill and descent into Lower Gateway Canyon for a trip around the mountain.  In the heart of the canyon scrambling is required for about one mile with a few significant impediments that require some work to get around.  After exiting the canyon the group will pass a boulder field popular with free climbers on the south side of the mountain.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:30 AM.  Coordinator - Steve Allen.

Tuesday, September 30 - Angel Peak.  The final hike of the month is one that has not been offered to the club in the past.  The destination is the peak overlooking Spring Mountain Youth Camp on which the instrument array dome some people confuse with an observatory is located.  The route itself is across the desert with very little shade and utilizes a series of Forest Service Roads coming in from Kyle Canyon Road to the south.  Total distance is about 7 or 8 miles, elevation gain is perhaps 1,500 feet, and the rating is moderately strenuous.  If interested in a lot of tedium to get to a place that few reach, join the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:30 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

August 2014 Hike List

The information below is important to determine where our group meets prior to each hike.  Please read this section before skipping to the actual hike descriptions.  Hikes during the month of August will be split between the Red Rock Canyon area (early mornings on select Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) and the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains (usually referred to as the Mount Charleston area).  Information regarding assembly locations and directions to those locations is immediately below.

Red Rock Canyon Area.  Our assembly point for summer hikes in Red Rock Canyon, Cottonwood Valley, and the west side of the escarpment is at the Red Rock Casino on Charleston Boulevard just east of 215. We will be parking at the north end of the lot along Charleston Boulevard.

Mount Charleston Area.  For hikes north of Las Vegas in either the Mount Charleston area or in the Sheep Mountains the assembly point will be at the Santa Fe Station Casino.  This property has two parking garages, one on the north end of the casino close to Highway 95 and the Rancho exit and one on the southeast side closer to the intersection of Rancho and Lone Mountain Road.  We always use the third level of the southeast parking garage as our meeting location.  This garage can be accessed from Lone Mountain Road traveling in either direction at the entrance near the theater addition.  It can also be accessed from Rancho.  If traveling northbound on Rancho turn in at the casino entrance signalized intersection and turn left to access the garage.  If traveling southbound on Rancho pass the signal and turn right at the entrance that directly accesses the garage.  This second option is used if you are getting to Santa Fe using northbound Highway 95 and taking the Rancho exit.  Drive up to the third level and turn left - we will be meeting right there.

Friday, August 1 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Held in the vicinity of Red Rock Canyon, these early hikes are usually about 4 to 6 miles in length and are designed to get participants back to the vehicles by midmorning to avoid the heat of the day.  The exact hike will be determined by the group at the assembly point, but they will normally be moderate in nature.  If interested, join the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, August 2 - South Sister Saddle Loop.  The early hike for the first Saturday in August will take place in Lee Canyon in the northern section of the Spring Mountains.  It will cover a total distance of 7 miles with an elevation gain in excess of 1,000 feet and is rated moderately strenuous.  The route will start from the lower trailhead for Bristlecone Trail, proceed on that trail to the junction with Bonanza Trail, then access a ridge which leads to the saddle west of the peak before returning to the vehicles.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, August 2 - Fletcher Canyon.  The leisurely offering this Saturday will find the group trekking into a fantastic slot canyon on the north side of Kyle Canyon Road.  The easy to moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike covers a total distance of 4 miles with an elevation gain of 500 feet.  As always, the group will have a snack break in the slot directly below Obstacle Rock.  Participants should gather at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  This somewhat earlier start will be repeated on all Saturdays during August to counteract heat from later in the morning.  Coordinator - Judy Warner.

Sunday, August 3 - Blue Diamond Ridges.  This moderate early morning hike on the hill across from Red Rock Canyon will cover a distance up to 7 miles starting from the Cowboy Stables parking lot along Highway 159.  Actual distance will be determined by the rate of temperature increase during the morning.  Rating should be moderately strenuous with a gain slightly over 1,000 feet.  Participants should gather at Red Rock Casino for a 5:15 AM departure, and will meet the coordinator at the stables for the hike starting at 5:30 AM.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Sunday, August 3 - Big Falls & Beyond.  Total distance to be covered on this strenuous hike will be 6 miles or more with a gain of about 1,200 feet.  The out-and-back hike will start from the gravel parking lot signed for Mary Jane Falls and follow the opening section of the trail to the bottom of the switchbacks, where it will diverge into Big Falls Canyon.  After climbing the wall to the left of the waterfall the group will turn left and continue through the pines to a snack break above the cliffs before returning to the starting point.  Meet the rest of the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, August 4 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Our regular early morning coordinator returns to action this week for an unspecified moderate hike in the lower elevations west of Las Vegas.  Typically, distances on these summer hikes will be around 5 miles and be primarily on trail.  If you would like to get in a hike and still have most of the day left plan on joining the group for a departure from Red Rock Casino at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Monday, August 4 - Fletcher Canyon & Beyond.  Most of this hike will be a repeat of the later club hike scheduled the previous Saturday.  The difference will be that the group will climb through the Rabbit Hole next to Obstacle Rock and proceed up the remainder of the slot and into the wilderness area in the upper portion of the canyon.  There is some scrambling associated with the top portion of this outing.  Distance for this out-and-back hike will be around 5 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain and a moderately strenuous rating.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, August 5 - McFarland Approach.  Find out what the Bonanza Trail is like on this strenuous 11-mile hike north of Lee Canyon.  After about a mile on Upper Bristlecone trail the group will turn left for the steep climb up No Name Trail to its junction with Bonanza Trail and will continue north along the main ridge to the base of McFarland Peak, where participants can get a glimpse of what lies in store on the September 16 hike.  Basically an out-and-back trek, the return may include the switchbacks on the lower trail back to the junction with Bristlecone Trail.  Elevation gain should be around 1,500 feet.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Wednesday, August 6 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Enjoy the beauty of Red Rock Canyon and avoid the worst heat of the day on a moderate 4 to 6-mile hike designed to wrap up by midmorning.  If there is a particular area of Red Rock you would like to explore get to the assembly point early so you can have some input in the choice of destinations.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, August 7 - Fletcher Peak via Deer Creek.  Yet another variation of the trek to the top of the easternmost mountain on the edge of Kyle Canyon will provide participants with lots of challenge and some spectacular scenery.  The opening portion of this strenuous outing will follow Deer Creek and climb on a steep ridge to Mummy Springs before passing Raintree on the way to the peak.  After descending on the fabled dozen switchbacks of North Loop Trail the route will turn left and make the final descent back toward Highway 158 on Wild Horse Ridge.  Distance is about 7 or 8 miles with close to 2,000 feet of elevation gain.  Meet at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Kay Blackwell.

Friday, August 8 - Red Springs.  Most of the route for this moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike will be in the shade as the group will start from Red Springs and go around the south end of the Calico Hills to the Calico II Overlook utilizing the canyon between the sandstone hills and the scenic drive as much as possible.  Those planning on carpooling from Red Rock Casino should leave the assembly point at 5:15 AM to meet the coordinator and any other participants at the Red Springs Picnic Area for a 5:30 AM start to the hike.  If the gate to the picnic area is not open you can park just outside along the road.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Saturday, August 9 - Wallace Canyon.  The crashed plane may have been removed but the route over a ridge looking down on Wallace Canyon is still beautiful.  The out route for this strenuous 6-mile hike involves Bristlecone and No Name Trails.  After reaching the saddle at the top of No Name Canyon the real work begins with a scramble to where the plane used to be.  After a short break the group will bypass the top of the ridge and take an old game trail for a longer break at the top of No Name.  The return to the vehicles will be off-trail with some steep sections and ridge bouldering.  Departure from Santa Fe Station is at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Saturday, August 9 - Upper Bristlecone Trail.  The second group of the day will also be starting from the top of Lee Canyon Road near the ski resort, but they will stay on the Bristlecone Trail through the forest all the way to the junction with Bonanza Trail for the main break.  This moderate out-and-back hike will cover a total distance of just under 5 miles and gain 500 feet in elevation.  This outing is rated moderate and, as usual, the pace will be leisurely.  The assembled group will leave from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Judy Warner.

Sunday, August 10 - Trail Canyon/Stanley B Canyon.  There is a bit of exploration to be done on this strenuous point-to-point 6-mile hike that will have all of the 1,400 feet of elevation gain on the way up Trail Canyon to the junction with North Loop Trail.  From that location the group will head out on Cockscomb Ridge, climb down a chute, trek across the ridge below the comb, and intersect with the ridge leading down to the saddle above Stanley B.  About half of the hike involves scrambling and bushwhacking over steep terrain and scree.  Vehicles will be needed at both ends of the hike.  The group will depart at 7:00 AM from Santa Fe Station.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Tuesday, August 12 - Lee Canyon Chair Lifts.  The ski slopes at the top of Lee Canyon are generally not known as hiking routes but that's exactly what they will become on today's trek.  The group will head up along chair #1 and climb a steep scree filled crevasse to North Loop Trail.  Turning left, they will follow that upper trail for about one mile, dropping into a steep gully leading down to the house for chair #2.  Estimated distance is about 5 or 6 miles with 2,000 feet of vertical gain.  Because of the extremely steep terrain this hike is rated as very strenuous.  A 7:00 AM departure from Santa Fe Station will be in effect.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Thursday, August 14 - Raintree via Deer Creek.  This is a somewhat shorter version of the hike from the previous Thursday.  For this outing the group will head up past the cabins near Deer Creek and access the ridge leading to the Mummy's Toe Trail just north of Mummy Springs.  After a break at the 3,000 year old tree they will start down North Loop Trail, eliminating the trek over to Fletcher Peak, and make the final descent along Wild Horse Ridge.  Total distance should still be around 6 miles and you should consider this outing to be moderately strenuous.  Let's aim for a 7:30 AM departure from Santa Fe Station.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Friday, August 15 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Although we have a different coordinator this week the parameters are the same as the other Red Rock area outings.  The hike will be determined at the assembly point but it will still be in the range of 4 to 6 miles and carry at moderate rating.  Meet the other participants at Red Rock Casino for a 6:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Helmut DeCandia.

Saturday, August 16 - Wild Horse Canyon.  Join the group for a scenic tour of a forested glade on this 3 to 4-mile loop hike with 800 feet of elevation gain and a moderate rating.  The group will take its time climbing up North Loop Trail to the mid-ridge meadows where the break will occur.  As the hike continues the route follows a narrow trail across the side of a slope and begins a steep half mile descent into a canyon that once served as the habitat for a lone wild horse.  The assembled group will leave Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Judy Warner.

Sunday, August 17 - Mummy's Toe.  The passage by the old resort cabins and onto the ridge leading to the Mummy's Toe Trail is again the opening section of for a club hike.  Once at the trail this time, however, the group will turn right and shortly encounter a wild and steep scramble up an unmaintained trail to the ridge that leads to the peak surrounded by cliffs on three sides.  North Loop Trail may be used for the descent.  Distance is about 7 miles with 2,600 feet of elevation gain and a strenuous rating.  Departure time from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.

Monday, August 18 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  Join the other early risers for a moderate hike of between 4 and 6 miles in the Red Rock Canyon area.  The actual destination will be decided at the assembly point in keeping with the usual protocol for these hikes.  Expect the hike to take up to two and a half hours so that everyone will get back home before the heat of the day rolls in.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Helmut DeCandia.

Monday, August 18 - Bristlecone Loop.  A fairly rare occurrence of late is a straightforward trail hike in the Spring Mountains.  That will be the case today, however, as the route will cover the most visited trail in Lee Canyon.  I'm not sure which of the trailheads will be used as the starting point or in which direction it will proceed, but the total distance is 6 miles with 700 feet of elevation gain and a moderate rating.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, August 19 - Mummy's Tummy.  The highest portion of the anatomy is the destination for another very strenuous trek up the mountain.  Rather than the standard route from Trail Canyon this version will start near Deer Creek and climb up the familiar ridge to the Mummy's Tummy Trail just north of Mummy Springs.  At a saddle which some people refer to as the ankle the group will head to the right through a notch in the cliffs and on to the top of the second highest peak in southern Nevada.  Distance is probably about 8 miles with 3,200 feet of elevation gain.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Wednesday, August 20 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  What will the intrepid group of early hikers encounter this time as they venture into the Red Rock Canyon area for a moderate hike of 4 to 6 miles?  Come and find out the answer by joining the group at Red Rock Casino for a 6:00 AM departure to the trailhead determined by the assembly.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Thursday, August 21 - Cave Springs.  This moderately strenuous out-and-back 6-mile hike with 1,800 feet of elevation gain involves going up Trail Canyon and turning left on the North Loop Trail to the horse trough fed by springs issuing from the caves above the trail.  This trough serves as a replacement for an older model that had begun leaking a couple of years ago.  Since pack horses are needed from time to time in the battle to maintain the Spring Mountain trail system, this is an important stop for water.  By the way, views toward Kyle Canyon are quite spectacular.  The group will head out from Santa Fe Station at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Sylvie Courtemarsh.

Friday, August 22 - Blue Diamond Canyon 4B.  Avoiding the heat of the day will be one of the main objectives for this short hike into a canyon on the south end of Blue Diamond Hill.  The hike is about 3 or 4 miles but does involve a considerable amount of scrambling in the upper section which would potentially cause it to have a moderately strenuous rating.  Anyone carpooling from Red Rock Casino should leave at 5:20 AM for the main assembly point, which will be at a gravel parking lot on the right side of the entrance road to the community of Blue Diamond just past the bridge.  Starting time for the hike will be 5:45 AM and south side participants can drive straight to the main location.  Coordinator - David Hardy.

Friday, August 22 - Mary Jane Falls.  Another well-traveled path in the higher elevations of the Spring Mountains is the official route to the base of a seasonal waterfall draining a significant portion of the ridge between Mount Charleston and Mummy Mountain.  The out-and-back hike is only 3 miles in total distance with 920 feet of elevation gain and commands a moderate rating.  Those interested in this outing should assemble at the normal spot at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Saturday, August 23 - Deer Creek.  A lot of early twentieth century history in the Spring Mountains is on display along the route of this moderate 3-mile out-and-back hike.  A set of cabins that will be passed represents a 1920's attempt to put a resort community on the down slope of Mummy Mountain and there are remaining elements from a sawmill operation from the same relative period.  Much of the hike is on gravel road with a few steeper sections, so the uphill pace will be quite leisurely.  The group will meet at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Judy Warner.

Sunday, August 24 - Bonanza Peak.  This hike was rescheduled from July when inclement weather disrupted our attempt at the peak.  It is a strenuous 10-mile out-and-back hike that involves 2,600 feet of elevation gain and a whole lot of switchbacks.  The access point is from the north end of the Bonanza Trail near Cold Creek and requires high clearance vehicles to negotiate a rough gravel road for a stretch of two miles.  This is the location where wild horses are often in view during the last stage of the drive or at the parking area.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:00 AM.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Monday, August 25 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  We will be entering the final week of the really early summer hikes in the Red Rock area hosted by this coordinator.  Although there will be a few early morning lower elevation hikes during September, they will be predetermined and posted on the schedule for the month.  Today the moderate 4 to 6-mile hike will be determined by the group arriving early enough at Red Rock Casino to provide some input.  Departure time will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Monday, August 25 - Wild Horse Ridge.  This moderate loop hike on a route that many people should be familiar with this month is 5 miles in length from the parking lot serving the Deer Creek Picnic Area.  The opening section is along the highway to the North Loop Trailhead, saving the interesting part for later in the hike.  There is a fairly steep descent off an approach ridge from the mid-level meadows and some great expansive views looking northeast toward the Nevada Test Site.  The assembled group will leave from Santa Fe Station at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - Nancy Moore.

Tuesday, August 26 - Mack's Peak.  Another club outing that was rained out in July is this assault on an imposing rock monolith on the north side of Lee Canyon.  While the distance is something less than 5 miles, the difficult terrain and elevation gain of around 2,000 feet cause this to be rated very strenuous.  To access the trailhead the group will have to drive to the end of Mack's Canyon Road.  While not absolutely requiring high clearance vehicles they are strongly recommended.  Meet the other participants at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Michael O'Connor.

Wednesday, August 27 - Early Morning Red Rock Hike.  While summer seems to linger on in the Las Vegas area for another month, this will be the last early Red Rock hike with Doug, so come out and thank him for his efforts over the last several months.  The parameters for his series will remain in place for this hike, meaning a moderate rating and a distance of 4 to 6 miles, with the destination to be determined at the meeting spot.  Departure from Red Rock Casino will be at 6:00 AM.  Coordinator - Doug Chang.

Wednesday, April 27 - Bristlecone Trail.  From the write-up that was received it appears that this hike may be a moderate 5-mile point-to-point hike starting at the lower trailhead by the gravel parking area and winding up at the upper trailhead located near the ski resort.  If this is the case it will eliminate the need to have any portion of the trek on the paved highway at the top of Lee Canyon.  It would also require a short vehicle shuttle to get transportation properly lined up.  Participants should assemble at Santa Fe Station and they will depart from there at 8:00 AM.  Coordinator - John Stewart.

Thursday, August 28 - Fletcher Peak.  What summer month would be complete without at least one hike to the top of this 10,200-foot mountain?  Okay, so we actually have two this month.  For this outing our coordinator will take us up the normal route to the peak, which means heading up North Loop Trail past the switchbacks and branching left on the approach trail that is now getting well established.  The return may include a detour down something named Wild Horse or it could return straight to the vehicles.  Distance of 7 miles and net elevation gain of 1,900 feet with a strenuous rating are the critical statistics.  Departure from Santa Fe Station will be at 7:30 AM.  Coordinator - Sylvie Courtemarsh.

Friday, August 29 - Sawmill Trails Options & Pot Luck.  End the summer with a hike and a picnic at the Sawmill Picnic Area.  This will be a special combined outing with members of Sun City Anthem Hiking Club and will feature your choice of two different hikes.  One will be an easy to moderate 3-mile hike on the ridge to the north of the picnic area and the other a moderate 6-mile extended hike.  Both of these are loops.  For those going up with the Around the Bend Friends contingent, we will be departing from Santa Fe Station for the picnic area at 8:30 AM with the hikes starting about forty minutes later.  Participants should plan on bringing an item to share with six to eight people plus their main food item or sandwich and beverage.  Around the Bend Friends members wanting to participate should RSVP with Chris Dempsey at dempseylv@aol.com no later than Tuesday, August 26 and let him know what you intend to bring.  Let's show our neighbors in Henderson how we like to socialize as well as hike.  Coordinators - Chris Dempsey, Beth & Keith Lane.

Saturday, August 30 - Telephone Canyon.  It seems we started the summer hiking in the Mount Charleston area with this easy to moderate 4-mile point-to-point hike and here it is offered again.  The actual route starts from the Robbers' Roost pullout along Highway 158 and ends near Highway 157 at the entrance to Kyle Canyon.  In between is a descent of nearly 1,000 feet.  Some extra vehicles will be needed for the car shuttle as we will be parking in two places.  Those wanting to participate in this leisurely downhill hike should meet at Santa Fe Station for an 8:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Chris Dempsey.

Sunday, August 31 - Mummy Springs Loop.  End the month with a moderately strenuous 6-mile loop hike accessed from Highway 158, also known as Deer Creek Road.  This hike will be done in a clockwise direction by heading up North Loop Trail past Raintree and on to the springs, then descending on the ridge leading back to the Deer Creek Picnic Area.  Net elevation gain is around 1,500 feet and there will be scrambling and irregular terrain involved.  If this is your type of hike meet the group at Santa Fe Station for a 7:00 AM departure.  Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez.
