March 2019 Hike List

The schedule includes hikes in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Lake Mead National Recreational Area, and the Spring Mountains. Meeting locations for hikes in any other areas will be specified in the hike description. You can locate detailed information on all locations at the AtBF blog and in a file at the https://groups.io/g/atbf website. Also, the exposure information is now located on the blog. Blogsite: www.aroundthebendfriends.com

IMPORTANT NOTE- Hike coordinators may not always be at either the early or primary assembly points. Participants will need to monitor the time and set up carpooling to the next meeting location or pickup point when that occurs. Although most of these situations are noted in the hike descriptions, others may occur that are not so noted. Times indicated for each hike are departure times and are strictly observed.

Please pay attention to the difficulty ratings for each hike offered and do not attempt hikes that are beyond your abilities. Participants can find additional descriptions about hikes on the blog by clicking on the Hike Descriptions link and/or using the Search Box found at the top right of the blog. Members should also contact the coordinator if they have any concerns or questions about the hike. As two of our prime considerations on any hike are safety and enjoyment, it is important that each participant have the capability of completing any advertised hike at the pace published by the coordinator.

It is the responsibility of new members to prove their hiking ability, therefore, hikers new to our club must begin with one of the easy or easy to moderate hikes offered on the monthly schedule. After they have gained sufficient experience, have been able to assess their abilities relative to the group, and have had a chance to interact with our coordinators, they will be free to start moving up to more difficult hikes. New hikers who are guests of existing members may initially participate in other than easy or easy moderate hikes but must be accompanied by the existing member who will take responsibility for their safety if the situation demands.

Hike coordinators will have the right to reject any hiker, whether new to the club or an existing member, if they believe that such person’s participation would infringe on the ability of the group to conduct the hike as advertised or if overall safety becomes an issue.

Questions regarding general information should be directed to club president John Ward at wardjohn1948@yahoo.com. Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the listed coordinator. Refer to the club roster for contact information.

This trailhead is also used for the shorter Badger Pass trek. Starting in a northerly direction, the route goes around the north end of a ridge and meets the Badger Pass Trail. Near this junction the group will begin a cross-country route east up a ridge that connects with the main north-south spine of the small range. The return will be down to Badger Pass on the way back to the vehicles. The full group will depart for the hike at 8 AM. Coordinator- David Hardy.

Wednesday, March 6, Calico 1 and 2 from Calico Basin: Moderate; 5 miles; 500' elevation; 8:00 AM. We begin at the big wash in Calico Basin and catch a gentle ridge over to Calico 1, then it's onto another trail over to a nice high point near Calico 2. Thursday, March 7, Pinto Ridge Loop Exploratory/RSVP: Moderately Strenuous to Strenuous; 6 miles; 2000' elevation gain; approx. 5 hours + Travel Time - Half of this hike is on record on the blog. A climb up to Pinto Ridge Peak starts the hike. Afterwards, the route follows the ridge line with canyon dips in between the small peaks. Just before we would climb the steep Jean's Peak, we turn left and descend its wash instead. A couple of road crossings and various washes will take us back to the cars. Please RSVP via kaywhiffen@yahoo.com so that a safe number of hikers is assured. Come and help us create this new route! Meet at the CVS/Albertsons (Lake Mead & Hollywood) for an 8 AM departure. Or, meet at the MM 4 pull out at 8:15 AM. Coordinator- Kay Blackwell

Friday, March 8, Potato Knoll / Arnight Loop: Moderately Strenuous; 7 miles; 900' elevation; 8:00 AM. We begin at the dirt lot at the end of the scenic loop and hike over to the upper trail that goes around Potato Knoll. Near the petrified wood, we use a game trail that takes us up and connects back to the normal trail. After a short break at the large turnout, we hike up a trail that takes us up along a low ridge. The descent from this ridge is steep and requires use of hands to get over boulders. We reconnect to the trail and make our way over to the Knoll Trail off of Oak Creek Trail. We take another break close to the junction of Knoll and Arnight. Then it's down Arnight Trail and back to the cars. Depart the Red Rock at 8:00 AM or meet at the dirt lot at 8:15 AM. The painted pinnacles is a beautiful graduated maroon, red, pink, white, and yellow area of spires and ridges at the base of Baseline Mesa. After leaving the Silica Dome parking lot the route descends to a firm wash which we follow west for a while. Then we go up a ridge to a saddle before viewing the painted pinnacles. After all the photos have been taken, we climb up the side of Baseline Mesa and walk along the NW top before descending down to the remains of the Buena Vista campground built by the Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Our return is along an interesting sculpted rocky wash canyon and then open wash. Meet Brian and the others at the Silica Dome parking lot on Fire Canyon Road in the park at 8:30 am. Coordinator- Brian Dodd

Saturday, March 9, East Gateway Canyon: Easy; 3 miles; 8:30 AM. This is a new hike for us thanks to AtBF member Ann Cronin. Coordinator- David Gray

Tuesday, March 12, Top of the World via the 3 Steps to Death: Moderately Strenuous; 3.8 miles; 1,100 FT gain; Class 3; 7:30 AM. This approach from White Dome takes a route that involves an angled slope around some rocks with exposure...we named it the 3 Steps to Death years ago. The route down from the top of the world is just a little less scary, dropping over a waterfall and zig-zagging down its face. The return is beautiful and involves some canyons not normally hiked back to White Dome. A short-ish hike but it keeps your attention. We will depart the NE corner of the Sun City Summerlin Pinnacle Community Center parking lot at 7:30 AM. The Pinnacle address is 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd and is an easy off and on to the 215. Those meeting at the Lucky Club or the Aliante Casino, organize yourselves and leave at 7:50 AM. We’ll all reassemble at the Valley of Fire Visitor Center at 8:50-9:00 AM. Coordinator- Brian Dodd

It eventually peters out and then we cross the upper part of Canyon #3 and find another trail following the side of the canyon and back to the cars. The main assembly point / trailhead will be the gravel parking lot on the right side of the entrance road to the community of Blue Diamond just past the wash bridge. Meet there by 8 AM. Take another left at the Veterans Home and follow it for about a 1/4 of a mile to the trailhead/parking lot site. We will take our break there before returning back to the cars. West side participants should leave Red Rock Casino by 7:45AM. Southside participants should leave the Henderson Fiesta at 8:00 A.M. Coordinators- Ron and Sandi Hindmarch

Sunday, March 17, Grand Circle Mid-Section/Sandstone Quarry O&B: Moderate; 4 miles; gain of 855 FT; 8:30 AM. This is an interesting, mostly moderate trek starting at the trailhead parking lot near MM 6 of the Red Rock Scenic Loop where it intersects with the White Rock Mountain Road. Our hike goal will be the Sandstone Quarry via the Grand Circle Trail. Two landmarks to note include the large juniper tree and the big boulder that looks like a cracked dinosaur egg. The quarry will be a good place to take our break. On the way back, we’ll stop off at the old quarry area, which will require a bit of bushwhacking. Meet the coordinator at the Red Rock Casino by 8:30 AM. Coordinator- David Gray-

If coming from Red Rock Casino, turn right at the sign for Blue Diamond, cross the bridge over the wash and park at the gravel lot on your right at the start of this community. The group will then begin descending along a ridge above the main Calico Tank Trail. Along this return, we will negotiate up a 20 foot high rock formation, “Tony’s Wall,” with a variety of hand and foot holds. Meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure. Friday, February 1st, Slots of Fun: easy moderate, 4 miles, 400 FT gain, 8 AM. This hike has two parts. The first is easy. We begin at the Mile Marker 4 (Hwy 93) parking area for the Arizona Hot Springs, hiking back up the road for about a half mile to explore several interesting, colorful slot canyons. When finished there we’ll head back toward the cars. Just before getting to the parking lot, we begin the second part of this trek, a moderate section that involves getting through an opening under a fence. It is a bit difficult as you can easily slip. Those wanting to avoid this may continue on back to the cars. Cameras are welcomed. We’ll depart the Henderson Fiesta by 8 AM. Coordinator- David Hardy

We’ll have great views of the surrounding rugged mountains and lava flows. Besides checking out the headstones at the old cemetery, we’ll also take in Nevada’s oldest drinking establishment, the Pioneer Saloon. January 2019 Hike List

The schedule includes hikes in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the Spring Mountains. Meeting locations for hikes in any other areas will be specified in the hike description. You can locate detailed information on all locations at the AtBF blog and in a file at the Yahoo group website. Also, the exposure information is now located on the blog. Blogsite: www.aroundthebendfriends.com

IMPORTANT NOTE - Hike coordinators may not always be at either the early or primary assembly points.

Participants can find additional descriptions about hikes on the blog by clicking on the Updated Hike Descriptions link and/or using the Search Box found at the top right of the blog.

Questions regarding general information should be directed to Lettie Gutierrez at chico04@msn.com. Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the listed coordinator. Refer to the club roster for contact information.
