The schedule includes hikes in the Red Rock
Canyon National Conservation Area and the Lake Mead Recreation Area. Meeting
locations for hikes in any other areas will be specified in the hike
description. You can locate detailed information on all locations at the AtBF
blog and in a file at the Yahoo group website. Also, the exposure information
is now located on the blog. Blogsite:

IMPORTANT NOTE - Hike coordinators may not
always be at either the early or primary assembly points. Participants will
need to monitor the time and set up carpooling to the next meeting location or
pickup point when that occurs. Although most of these situations are noted in
the hike descriptions, others may occur that are not so noted. Times indicated
for each hike are departure times and are strictly observed.
Please pay attention to the difficulty ratings for each hike offered and do not attempt hikes that are beyond your
abilities. Participants can find additional descriptions about hikes on the
blog by clicking on the Updated Hike Descriptions link and/or using the Search
Box found at the top right of the blog. Members should also contact the
coordinator if they have any concerns or questions about the hike. As two of our prime considerations on any
hike are safety and enjoyment, it is important that each participant have the
capability of completing any advertised hike at the pace published by the
coordinator.
It is the responsibility of new members to prove
their hiking ability, therefore, hikers new to our club must begin with one of
the easy or easy to moderate hikes offered on the monthly schedule. After they
have gained sufficient experience, have been able to assess their abilities
relative to the group, and have had a chance to interact with our coordinators,
they will be free to start moving up to more difficult hikes. New hikers who
are guests of existing members may initially participate in other than
leisurely hikes, but must be accompanied by the existing member who will take
responsibility for their safety if the situation demands.
Hike coordinators will have the right to reject
any hiker, whether new to the club or an existing member, if they believe that
such person’s participation would infringe on the ability of the group to
conduct the hike as advertised or if overall safety becomes an issue.
Questions regarding general information
should be directed to Lettie Gutierrez at chico04@msn.com or by telephone at
(702)498-3050. Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the
listed coordinator. Refer to the club roster for contact information.

Thursday, January
4, Lava Butte (2871’) –
We’ll approach from the east side and tackle the large lava rocks that
make up the summit route. It’s a unique trek with a flat, one-mile desert
approach followed by a steep, one-mile scramble on VW-sized boulders. At five
miles with a mere 1100 feet of vertical, this ebony landmark nonetheless
garners a strenuous rating. Panoramic views of Lake Mead from
the peak. Departure times: Red Rock Casino, 7:15, CVS at Lake Mead
and Hollywood, 8:00, the trailhead at MM #2 on Northshore Road, 8:20. Coordinator

Valley. Use of hands might be necessary to climb up the last section to the
peak. The trail makes it way among large volcanic boulders up about 300 feet to
the top where we will take our break. Meet at the Walgreens located at 2451
Hampton Road in Henderson at 8:00AM.

650 feet of elevation gain in Calico Basin. The trailhead is at the wash
crossing on Calico Basin Road. We will climb up, cross over and climb up again
to a small peak in the middle of the basin. Then the route loops around behind
the peak and circles back to the parking lot passing a large cave under the
peak. Easy moderate pace. Meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30am departure. Coordinators – Ron and Sandi Hindmarch
Saturday, January
6th, Blue Diamond Canyons 2 & 3 - This is a moderate scramble with several dry
falls to negotiate. It is only 4 miles with 1000 feet of elevation gain. These
canyons are beautiful and sometimes have an owl flying around in them! We will
go at a pace that will accommodate all the participants. But be prepared for using
all your moderate scrambling skills. Exposure, I don't think is an issue. The
hike begins at the small utility building across from the town of Blue Diamond.
Please carpool from either Red Rock Casino or the gas
station (Hwy 159 & 160) departing at 8:00am so that the minimal
parking will be sufficient. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell
Sunday, January 7th, Valley
of Fire Loop - This moderate
hike with moderate pace will begin at a parking area on the road leading to
White Domes and end up at White Domes, requiring a car shuttle. Some
scrambling in places will be required in this 6-mile hike and around 300 ft.
elevation. Lots of varied colors will make you think of varied flavors of
candy. Be sure to bring a lunch as this hike will take
most of the day. We will leave from the Lucky Club Casino at Cheyenne and
I-15 at 7:15 AM. Coordinator –

Monday, January 8th, Sandstone Quarry / Keystone Thrust
Loop - This moderate to
moderately strenuous loop hike is 7 miles with 1350 feet in elevation gain. It is around 6
miles of trail and 1 mile of scrambling down a wash. We'll begin at the

Keystone Thrust Trail. After snacking at the open thrust fault, we'll descend
through its wash then return on the Grand Circle. Meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00am
departure. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell
Tuesday, January 9th,
Cheyenne Mountain, AKA Eagle Peak (3833’) — Dwarfed by the more
formidable Summerlin Peak to the west, Cheyenne Mountain nonetheless commands a
modicum of respect. With the meat of the hike at the outset, we’ll tackle the
steep, 900’ limestone slab to the summit before continuing our northward
traverse along the ridgeline. On the short side of four miles with a thousand
feet of vertical. Color it Class 2, moderately strenuous. Jagged
limestone terrain throughout, making ski poles an asset and leather gloves a
necessity. Depart from Gilmore Cliff Shadows Park at the western terminus of
Alexander Road, 8:00 AM. Coordinator - Michael O’Connor
Wednesday, January 10th,
Sienna Ridge – This is a moderate hike that climbs the ridge
behind Siena. We begin from Mesa Park and make our way along the path to the
base of the ridge. Then it’s up the steep road to the ridge. We hike along the
ridge trail and then loop around to the trail that takes us back to our cars. Depart
the Red Rock at 8:00AM and drive to
Mesa Park located at 5401 Mesa Park Drive. Coordinator – Tony Fountain

Aliante Pkwy exit from 215 and go north. Turn right into the casino parking at
the first light and U-turn into the parking lot's far northwest corner. Departure will be at 7:30am. Optional
meeting points will be at the Smoke Shop (exit #75 from I-15) at 8:00am and the
Valley of Fire Visitor Center at 8:30am. Please RSVP for these
optional meeting locations. Local fee for a car to enter the park is $8
unless it has gone up this year. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell
Thursday, January 11th, Late Night Parking
to Blue Diamond - Moderately
strenuous hike of 8-9 miles, and 1200 ft. elevation gain. We will hike
the Late-Night Trail from the parking lot and eventually leave it to take a
fainter trail up to the base of the canyons of the Red Rock Bluffs. We
will pass by petroglyphs and two springs, and the mouth of Velvet Canyon, then
on toward Tertiary Ridge which we will follow a trail to the top and follow it
back to where we drop into Blue Diamond. A car shuttle is required
so we need to meet the coordinator at the gravel parking area on the right side
of the entrance road into Blue Diamond at 7:15AM. Coordinator
- David Hardy
Friday, January 12th, Pinto Valley - Mile 18 on the
North Shore Road is where this hike begins as we drop into the wash leading to
Lake Mead and Hamblin Mountain, in and out the same way with a balloon of about

Mead Blvd. at 7:55AM. Coordinator

Canyon. We will take our break at the end of the canyon, then turn around and
hike back to the cars. Meet at the Henderson Fiesta at 8:30AM. Red Rock participants need to depart at 7:50 AM.
Coordinators – Ron and Sandi Hindmarch
Saturday, January 13th, SMYC & Dale's Trails - This is a moderate out and back hike of 6 miles with an
elevation gain of around 1000 feet. We will begin at the Lost Creek
TH on Willow Springs Road off of the Scenic Loop and our turnaround point will
be at Skull Rock. Both of these trails offer scenic desert gardens and
possibility of large wildlife encounters. Meet at Red Rock Casino for a 7:30am
departure. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell
Sunday, January 14th, Hamblin Mountain – Rate it moderately strenuous with 7 miles and
1400 feet of elevation gain. Pacing will be moderate as we keep a steady pace. The
trailhead is at MM 18 on Northshore Road in Lake Mead NRA. This gem offers
fantastic views of Lake Mead. The route follows a series of washes to a small
ridge, crosses the ridge and follows another drainage to the base of the peak.

feet. We will leave from the Lucky Club Casino at Cheyenne and I-15
at 7:15 AM. Coordinator – David
Hardy
Tuesday, January

contributions to the club, this coordinator will be selecting some of his
favorite routes over the next several months. An out-and-back hike covering a total distance of 5 or 6 miles, this trek
will start from where the Red Rock Scenic Drive exits onto Highway 159. With
minimal overall elevation gain and minor sections of slightly more difficult
trail an overall rating of moderate
applies. The turn-around point will be where the trail drops into the canyon
floor, and that is the spot that will be used for the snack break. Participants should gather at
Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM
departure or meet the group at the trailhead parking lot where the hike will
start by 8:15 AM. Coordinator – David Gray
Tuesday, January
16th, White Rock Spring Plus (6020’) — From Willow Springs, it’s the standard six-mile

NRA is 7.5 miles with 1600 feet of elevation gain. It travels through some
beautiful geology with a mid-point at an unusual "forest" of teddy
bear chollas. These sticklers are famous for catching on to the unsuspecting
hiker so beware! There are several dry falls that will be negotiated on the way
to and from the forest. Scrambling skills must be up to par to attend. We will
begin at the water tank TH. Meet at the Henderson Fiesta
for an 8:00am departure. West side participants may meet
at the Red Rock Casino to leave at 7:20am. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell
Friday, January 19th, Beyond Cottonwood Valley -
A moderately strenuous hike will begin at
the far end rough, requiring HCVs. We will climb a high ridge that
leads to Wilson Spring. This is semi-exploratory with estimated 5-6 miles
and around 1000 ft. elevation gain. Most of this is off trail, may
be some scrambling. We will leave from the gas station on 159 and 160 at 7:45AM where you will meet the

manganese mine and the appropriately named arch, then reaches the break point
on a ledge high above the Colorado River. Total elevation gain will be about

through the Red Rock wash (scrambling) from Willow Springs TH until we cross
paths with the steep ridge trail. After our break on the peak, we will descend

approximately 900 feet. Departure will be from Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM. Coordinator- David Gray
Tuesday, January
23rd, McCullough Trail
End to End to End - A somewhat long
day is in store for those individuals who tackle the entire 16 miles of this strenuous out-and-back hike on the edge
of the McCullough Mountains south of Henderson. Fortunately, there is not a lot
of elevation gain over the slightly rolling terrain. Even with a moderately
fast pace the group is looking at close to six hours including a lunch stop at
the turn around point. Anyone meeting early at Red Rock Casino should
leave there by 7:00 AM. The main assembly point will be at the
Walgreen's Drug at the intersection of Sunridge Heights Parkway and Eastern

first hike is named Three Slots. It is 3.5 miles with 500 feet of elevation

is a short loop version of Painted Pinnacles. It is 3 miles with 400 feet of
elevation gain. This hike begins at the Fire Canyon Road Parking TH at the base

The easier of the two hikes (Painted Pinnacles) makes use of a dirt road for
the return portion. Bring a sack lunch for a tailgate picnic at the Silica Dome
TH. We will meet at the Aliante Casino parking lot, northwest corner outside.
Take the Aliante Pkwy exit from 215 and go north. Turn right into the casino

unless it has gone up this year. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell
Monday, January 29th, Upper Lost Creek Waterfall
– Most of this out-and-back hike of 4 to 5 miles follows
relatively easy trails, but the climb through the cliffs to the waterfall
elevates the overall rating from moderate
to moderately strenuous. There will be some Class 2 and easy Class 3
exposure. We will take a moderate pace starting from the Ice Box Canyon
Trailhead parking lot. The group will meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00AM departure. Coordinator- Tony

hike begins at Red Springs picnic area. Starting out, we'll trek along the base
of the Calico making our way over to our favorite hill that can require 5
stop(s) or more. The pace will be balanced as we work our way to the top for a
brief break. Moderately slow pace. Then we turn down into the Lower Gateway
Canyon wash where hikers will have the option to stay on the trail or turn to
scramble down the sandstone. It's a very pretty area, but we will encounter
three areas where hands and hiking on your butt will be required to get us over
large boulders. Then it’s around the east side where we'll view some
petroglyphs and possibly some climbers practicing their free-style techniques. Total distance is just over 5
miles with 500 plus feet of elevation. Depart the Red Rock at 8:00AM or meet at Red Springs at 8:15
AM. Coordinator- David Gray
