January 2020 Hike List

The schedule includes hikes in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Lake Mead National Recreational Area, and the Spring Mountains. Meeting locations for hikes in any other areas will be specified in the hike description. You can locate detailed information on all locations at the AtBF blog and in a file at either the group site: https://groups.io/g/atbf website or the blogsite: www.aroundthebendfriends.com

IMPORTANT NOTE- Hike coordinators may not always be at either the early or primary assembly points. Participants will need to monitor the time and set up carpooling to the next meeting location or pickup point when that occurs. Although most of these situations are noted in the hike descriptions, others may occur that are not so noted. Times indicated for each hike are departure times and are strictly observed.

Please pay attention to the difficulty ratings for each hike offered and do not attempt hikes that are beyond your abilities. Participants can find additional descriptions about hikes on the blog by clicking on the Hike Descriptions link and/or using the Search Box found at the top right of the blog. Members should also contact the coordinator if they have any concerns or questions about the hike. As two of our prime considerations on any hike are safety and enjoyment, it is important that each participant have the capability of completing any advertised hike at the pace published by the coordinator.

It is the responsibility of new members to prove their hiking ability, therefore, hikers new to our club must begin with one of the easy or easy to moderate hikes offered on the monthly schedule. After they have gained enough experience, have been able to assess their abilities relative to the group, and have had a chance to interact with our coordinators, they will be free to start moving up to more difficult hikes. New hikers who are guests of existing members may initially participate in other than easy or easy moderate hikes but must be accompanied by the existing member who will take responsibility for their safety if the situation demands.

Hike coordinators will have the right to reject any hiker, whether new to the club or an existing member, if they believe that such person’s participation would infringe on the ability of the group to conduct the hike as advertised or if overall safety becomes an issue.

Questions regarding general information should be directed to club president John Ward at wardjohn1948@yahoo.com.  Specific questions regarding hikes should be directed to the listed coordinator. Refer to the club roster for contact information.

From the park, it’s a CCW loop around the mountain. Steep 900’ ascent on serrated limestone. Good vibram soles and leather gloves recommended. Depart from Buckskin Cliff Shadows Park on Cliff Shadows Parkway near Cheyenne and the 215, 8:00 AM. Look for the white fence. Coordinator- Michael O’Connor

We will look at two distinct sites. The first will actually be at the new Ice Age Fossils State Park. We will walk in the area of the Big Dig which took place in 1963. Many fossil remains were found here. We will follow much of the new trails and descend into a major trench. From there we will leave the trail and head into Tule Springs and the Don Tuohy fossil site where a mammoth tusk was excavated in 2010. We will then return to the state park and finish the trail, return to our cars. Meet at the Santa Fe Casino at 8:30 AM. Special date, special guest- Dev is a spokesman from the Protectors of Tule Springs and will be at our club meeting (Boca Park REI) on January 8 at 7 PM. He will give a talk on his visit to Burning Man with the mammoth sculpture. He can also answer any questions that remain unanswered during our hike. Coordinator – Ed Matulis

Saturday, January 4, Fortification Hill (3718’): Moderately Strenuous, 4 miles, 1450’ vertical, accommodating pace - Gaze down at Hoover Dam and the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge from this lofty perch high above Lake Mead. Saturday, January 4, Sloan Canyon: Easy and Hard Version, 4.4 miles, 500 feet elevation gain.
We will break into 2 groups. One will take the easy route, the other will take the intermediate scramble route.   We will hike to petroglyph canyon where we will be able to look at thousands of petroglyphs.  Meet at the M Casino, 12300 S. Las Vegas Blvd. The parking lot is under the marque on Las Vegas Blvd and St Rose Parkway.  We will then caravan to Sloan Canyon. Meet at 8 AM. Coordinator Ron and Sandi, Tammie and Jim

Sunday, January 5, Cleopatra Wash: Moderately Strenuous, 7 miles, Class III scrambling with limited exposure, loss of 900-1541 feet, 8 AM. A traditional trek in the Lake Mead NRA that takes you down through the eroded remnants of the Cleopatra-Hamblin (Mountain) paleovolcano that was formed some 11 to 15 million years ago. The same forces that created the mountains and ranges we see today split this volcano apart by some 12 miles. Great views of colorful landscapes due to the deposits of sediments and volcanic activity await you. Our trailhead requires high clearance vehicles to navigate Boathouse Cove Road at Mile Marker (MM) 30 along the Northshore Road. Meet the coordinator at the CVS /Albertsons’ parking lot at Hollywood and Lake Mead Blvd by 8 AM. We’ll check the MM 4 pull off by 8:20 AM. Coordinator- David Gray

Monday, January 6th, Caldera / Mother Loop (Bootleg Canyon) - Moderately Strenuous (due to length only), 8 miles, 1230 feet elevation gain, 10:00 AM - Be prepared for a late start and a late ending for this distance hike on mostly trail. There is a small portion of the hike that climbs and descends through a couple of shortcut washes. That said, this is where we saw bighorns last time we were there! The hike takes us from the base of the zip line in Bootleg Canyon, Boulder City and up the West Leg Trail to the shortcut washes. This brings us over to the Caldera Loop and on up to the south end of the Mother Trail above the Cascata golf course. Finally, the Mother Trail wiggles its way back to the cars. Beautiful colors and interesting terrain. Meet at the Henderson Fiesta for a 10:00 AM departure. Other meet times: Red Rock Casino @ 9:15 AM and Zip Line Base @ 10:15 AM. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell

Tuesday, January 7, Summerlin Peak (5082’): Strenuous, 5 miles, 2k vertical, steep Class 2 - It’s an annual wintertime rite of passage. We’ll keep it simple and do the standard route, up-and-down, out-and-back. Brace for a challenging ascent followed by a taxing down climb featuring jagged limestone throughout. Depart from Buckskin Cliff Shadows Park on Cliff Shadows Parkway near Cheyenne and the 215, 8:00 AM. Look for the white fence. Coordinator- Michael O’Connor

Wednesday January 8, Ash Canyon Loop: Moderate to Moderate Strenuous, 4 miles, 800 FT elevation, 8:00 AM - Starting from the gravel parking lot at the end of Sandstone Drive, Calico Basin. We’ll scramble up Ash Canyon to the overlook (Tony's Fort) below Red Cap where we will have our snack break. Our return will take a seldom used route, down along the sandstone shelf overlooking Ash Canyon; then pass the upper end of Dragon Canyon continuing south until a gradual descent back to the trailhead. There is class 2 and some 3 scrambling and some exposure along sections of loose rock during the return. Departure from the dirt road at the Kraft Mountain trailhead at 8 AM. Coordinator- Tony Fountain

Wednesday, January 8th, AtBF January Club Meeting, REI Boca Park, 7:00 AM.

Thursday, January 9, High Route Cottonwood Valley: Moderately Strenuous, 6 miles, 1500 FT gain, 7:30 AM - The trek will start from the dirt parking area that we also use for Badger Pass. We'll trek out to Badger Pass and then leave that trail for a cross-country route up a steep ridge to yet a higher ridge with views of Las Vegas. From there the group will head south along the ridge and connect with the Deadhorse Trail passing through Red Valley back to the vehicles. Early assembly will be at Red Rock Casino on the west side, with the group leaving at 7 AM. Final assembly point will be the Chevron gas station at the intersection of Highways 159/160 with a departure time of 7:30 AM. Coordinator- David Hardy

Friday, January 10, Upper Cottonwood Valley/Canyon #4 Loop Exploratory: Moderately Strenuous, 5-6 plus miles estimated, 1200 FT gain expected, 4X4 vehicles required, Class II/III scrambling anticipated, 7:30 AM - This is a new route, my first time to go up into this area that I've been looking at, wondering about for years now. Keep in mind that Canyon #3 gave us the unique trek we call Climbers' Alcove. Now we're going to find out what Canyon #4 has to offer. It may even connect back over to the upper section of Canyon #3, providing a challenging scramble loop trek. Bring your gloves and poles. And expect to do some bushwhacking. As the Cottonwood Pass Road is in such poor condition, we'll need 4X4's. Expect a rough ride. Meet the coordinator and sweep (David Gray) at the Chevron gas station at 159/160 by 7:30 AM. Coordinator- David Hardy

Saturday, January 11th, Little Finland & The Subway (Gold Butte NM) - Moderately Strenuous to Strenuous, Trail & Scrambling, 9 miles, 1200 feet elevation gain, ~ 6 hours plus travel time (2 hours each way), 7:30 AM - This is an all day tour into Gold Butte National Monument that encompasses three large points of interest; Little Finland (a large area of interesting rock formations that is known around the world), The Subway (a sacred place for the ancient Paiutes), and Boulder Canyon (also a sacred place riddled with petroglyphs and impressive scrambling). There is your option of omitting Boulder Canyon but there will be a subsequent wait time of approximately 45 minutes. Meet in the northwest corner of the outdoor parking lot of the Alliante Casino (North 215 & Alliante Parkway) for a 7:30 AM departure. Other meet times: Henderson Fiesta @ 7:30 AM and the kiosk @ 8:15 AM located at the corner of Riverside and Gold Butte Road (Exit #112 off of I-15). Please advise me if you are going to meet me at the kiosk. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell

Saturday, January 11, Peak 3844, Easy, 4 miles, 500 elevation gain
The trail begins at the wash on Calico Basin Road.  We will follow a trail up the ridge route that takes us up to the top of the peak.  We will circle back down the peak and head to a break spot we named Lettie’s Lounge. Meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:30 departure. Coordinators Ron and Sandi

Sunday, January 12, Back Hills Lawn Mower Route: Moderate, 6 miles, 600 FT gain, 8:30 AM -The hike begins at the gravel parking area on the right side of Hwy 160 about 2 miles beyond out meetup location, which is the Chevron gas station at 159/160. The route will follow the Landmine Trail, then the Rubber Ducky Trail where we'll check the ducky tree for new rubber ducks. A little beyond that, we connect with the Old Spanish Trail for a short distance, then onto our goal, the Lawn Mower Trail. We will follow this until we join with the trail leading back to the parking lot. We'll maintain a moderate pace. Depart the Chevron station by 8:30 AM. Coordinator- David Hardy

Monday, January 13th, Raven's Balcony OB - Moderately strenuous, 6-7 miles, 1500+ ft. elevation, 8:00 AM - Today's trek will go up the wash and trail that is normally used to descend from the balcony. This path will avoid the difficult rabbit hole that I don't want to do but this is a route that might require route finding. The way up will still require use of hands to get up and over some boulders and then to climb up to the balcony. Views abound from the balcony. I want to use the dirt road and wash to get to our trailhead so vehicles with high clearance are preferred. I might have to change/cancel if it has rained. Depart the CVS on Lake Mead Blvd and Hollywood at 8:00 AM. Those departing the Rampart should depart by 7:20. We will stop by MM 4 to pick up any members there. Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez

Tuesday, January 14, Hill 4000 T: Moderate, 3.7 miles, 600 FT gain, 8 AM - This is a new hike for AtBF (at least it has not been on the schedule in the 9 years I've been a member). The trailhead starts at the parking lot on the right side of Moenkopi Road, about 0.3 of a mile in from SR 159, and before you get to the BLM Fire Station Road. There are a couple of short segments of class 3 scrambles. Remarkable 360 degree views. We will meet at the trailhead for an 8 AM start. Hill 4000 T (my name for it) is the peak just east of Moenkopi Rd and the Red Rock Campground. Coordinator- Tony Fountain

Tuesday, January 14, Two Elephants Loop/Valley of Fire: Strenuous, 5 miles, 1,200" gross gain, 7:30 AM - Last hiked in January of 2017, after Elephant Rock, the outward portion goes west along the high ridges to the South of the St. Thomas Wash, turning north, then up and down the ridges and washes to the North of St. Thomas Wash to the Sitting Elephant. Finally, there's the long crossing of the wash itself back to the cars. Leaving Sun City Summerlin Pinnacle parking lot at 0730 and Elephant Rock Trailhead at 0915. VoF terrain is always sandy, rocky, boulders and loose...i.e. difficult and tiring...but great fun. Mostly Class 2. Coordinator- Brian Dodd

Wednesday, January 15, Oak Creek Canyon Loop: Moderate, 6 miles, 917 FT elevation gain, rocky trail conditions at times, 8 AM - This is a loop trek that starts from where the Red Rock Scenic Loop Drive exits onto Highway 159. Our turn-around point, break area will be where the trail drops into the canyon floor. We should have great views of the snow and ice building up in the upper regions of the canyon walls. Participants should either gather at the Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure or meet at the Scenic Loop Exit Trailhead gravel parking area by 8:20 AM. Coordinator- David Gray

Thursday, January 16, Late Night Parking to Blue Diamond: Moderately Strenuous, 8-9 miles, 1200 FT elevation gain, shuttle required, 7:30 AM - We will hike the Late Night Trail starting from this SR 160 trailhead parking area and eventually leave it to take a fainter trail up to the base of the canyons of the Red Rock Bluffs. We will pass by petroglyphs and two springs, and the mouth of the Black Velvet Canyon, then on toward Tertiary Ridge where we will follow a trail to the top, then down coming back into Blue Diamond. A car shuttle is required so we need to meet the coordinator by 7:30 AM at the gravel parking area located on the right side of the entrance road at the start of this small community. Coordinator- David Hardy

Friday, January 17th, Hamblin Mountain - MS, 7 miles, 1400 ft. elevation gain, 8:00 AM - This is one of my favorite hikes in Lake Mead Area. The views of Lake Mead, Pinto Valley, Bowls of Fire and Las Vegas are worth the effort. There is a large dry waterfall that requires use of hands to climb up and down. My pace will be slow and steady so if you have wanted to try this hike, please come and enjoy. The hike begins at the turnout just past MM 18. Depart the CVS on Hollywood and Lake Mead Blvd. at 8:00 AM. Depart the Rampart to 7:20 AM. We will stop by MM 4 to pick up any hikers there. Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez

Saturday, January 18, New End Around Loop (Anniversary Narrows): Strenuous, 7 miles, 1300' gain, 8 AM - This is a strenuous loop through Anniversary Narrows that was created in 2017. The loop does not go onto private mine property, but it does have a few interesting challenges including a very steep climb out of the narrows that has some exposure involved. There are also other moderately strenuous scrambles. Come prepared with your camera since it is a rare opportunity to experience the beautiful narrows. HCVs are preferred. Meet at the CVS/Albertsons on Lake Mead & Hollywood for an 8:00 AM departure. (West side hikers should leave the Rampart by 7:15 AM. There will be a Mile Marker 4 drive by at 8:15 AM.) Coordinator- Kay Blackwell

Sunday, January 19, China Ranch Date Farm & Bakery: Moderate, 6 miles, 7 AM - Located south of Tecopa, CA off of the Old Spanish Trail Hwy, China Ranch grows dates of various varieties and is surrounded by interesting areas for hiking. Our route for today will take us through several narrow canyons and rock formations. Our break follows the trek as the ranch store offers a variety of date products, including their famous date shake. Meet the coordinator at the Chevron gas station on 159/160 by 7 AM. Bring a lunch. The drive time is just over an hour. Coordinator- David Hardy

Monday, January 20th, Black Mountain (Henderson) - MS/S, 6 miles, 2100 ft. elevation, 8:00 AM - My pace will be slow and steady as we make our way up the traditional trail. It is mostly trail but to gain the peak, we will hike up a steep section over lava boulders. The top offers views that are fantastic. Our decent will use a ridge where the trail goes over many sections of lava boulders where use of hands might be necessary so slow and steady is in order. Depart the Red Rock at 7:20 AM and meet at the Walgreens located at 2451 Hampton Road (corner of Anthem Pkwy and Hampton Road in Henderson for an 8:00 AM departure for the trailhead located on Shadow Canyon Drive. Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez

Tuesday, January 21, Calico I & II Peaks: Strenuous, 6 miles, 2000’ vertical, Class 3 scrambling - Take it up and over Guardian Angel Pass. Tackle the steep ascent to Calico II. Drop down to the big tinaja and continue up to Calico I. Complete the clockwise loop by bringing it home via Ash Canyon. Depart the Red Spring Boardwalk at 8:00 AM. Coordinator- Michael O’Connor

Wednesday, January 22nd, Calico Basin Loop - Moderate, 5 miles, 500 ft. 8:00 AM - Our trek begins at the big wash on Calico Basin Road. We use the trail to get up to the ridge and then hike along the ridge over to Lower Gateway Wash. Our break will be behind a sandstone hill at a large lounge area created by climbers. Then we make our way back to our cars using several trails. Depart the Red Rock Casino at 8:00 AM. Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez

Thursday, January 23rd, Liberty Bell Arch and Colorado Overlook OB - M/MS, 6 miles, 1100 ft. elevation, 8:00 AM - We begin at the White Rock Canyon trailhead parking lot in Arizona. My pace will be slow and steady. We descend the wash, then stay up on the rocks to explore and find the petroglyph rock that I found last month. We will eventually reconnect with the trail after scrambling down the rocks. The trail rolls up and down and has several steep sections. We will stop at the old manganese mine before proceeding over to the Arch. Then it's onward to a large overlook of the Colorado River. This is where we take our break. Depart the Fiesta Henderson at 8:00 AM. Depart Red Rock at 7:20 AM. Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez

Thursday, January 23, Zabriskie Loop @ Death Valley National Park: Moderately Strenuous, 8 miles, 1750 FT gain, 7:30 AM - The trailhead will be at the Zabriskie Point parking lot, meaning that the secondhand half of the hike will be the ascent through Golden Canyon. This area has some of the most celebrated scenery in Death Valley. Words cannot describe! Meet at one of two locations. North side hikers will meet at the Santa Fe Casino for a 7:30 AM departure and south side hikers will meet at the gas station (159 & 160) for a 7:30 AM departure. We should all meet at the Zabriskie Point parking lot on Highway 190 to begin the hike around 9:30 AM. Check the weather. Coordinator- Kay Blackwell

Friday, January 24, Horse Canyon: Moderately Strenuous, 7.2 miles, 1100’ gain, 7:30 AM - This hike will be new to most of us and begins off of SR 159 at South El Capitan Way near Doral Academy, where the road ends. Expect a rather long approach which leads to a deep, narrow canyon that slots up in places. There will be numerous short dry falls and some Class 3 scrambling on the way up. When we top out we will have our break. Then it is down a ridge which leads to an interesting canyon. Soon there is an old road that we will take to get back to the cars. Be sure to wear long sleeves and long pants as there will be bushwhacking at times. Meet the coordinator at the Chevron gas station at 159/160 by 7:30 AM. You may also meet at the end of South El Capitan Way near Doral Academy by 7:40 AM. Park at the intersection with West Cactus Ave in the southeast quadrant. Coordinator- David Hardy

Saturday, January 25th, Ejection Seat Ridge - Moderate / Moderately Strenuous, 5 miles, 1000 feet elevation gain, 8:30 AM - This is an old hike that routes up a narrow ridge to where an old ejection seat came to rest years ago after a crash in the area. Yet another small jet crashed not far from this and the route passes right by this crash site that has not been removed. We will add two ventures to the route to see an interesting dry fall slot and a colorful overview of the area. Meet at the CVS/Albertsons on Hollywood and Lake Mead Blvd. for an 8:30 AM departure. Other meet times include the top floor of the Rampart Casino garage @ 7:45 AM and Northshore Road's mile marker 4 @ 8:45 AM. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell

Sunday, January 26, Boneshaker Loop: Moderate, 5-6 miles, 1200 FT gain, 8 AM - This hike will go up the Boneshaker Trail (slow!). As the trail levels out the pace will be moderate. We will connect with the Three Amigos Trail that will take us across to the Bob Gnarly Trail down through the canyon or the Bomb Voyage Trail that will run by the Muffins. Meet the coordinator by 8 AM at the Cowboy Stables. Coordinator- David Hardy

Monday, January 27, North Bowl Back Loop: Moderately Strenuous, 8 miles, 750 FT gain, Class II in places, 8 AM - Several washes, especially the Main Wash on the west-side of the North Bowl of Fire, will give us access onto a plateau at the northwest corner of this iconic redstone formation. Points of interests will include the Moon Lander Arch, Elephant Arch plus sandstone formations, windows. Meet-up locations- West side participants can meet at the Rampart Casino parking garage and leave by 7:15 AM to meet the coordinator, main group at the parking lot behind the CVS at Lake Mead Blvd and Hollywood. That combined group will leave by 8:00 AM. We’ll check for hikers at Mile Marker 4. The trailhead is at Mile Marker 18, Northshore Road. Coordinator- David Gray

Tuesday, January 28th, Baseline Mesa / Painted Pinnacles - Moderately Strenuous / Strenuous, 6.5 miles, 1100 feet elevation gain, 8:00 AM - We begin at the end of Fire Canyon Road at the base of Silica Dome in the Valley of Fire State Park. The route follows a small wash all the way down to the old Visitor Center / Campground ruins from back in the day. After a break, we will climb up to the top of Baseline Mesa (some exposure involved), cross over, and drop down the other side into the Painted Pinnacles. This year, I am determined to find the beginning of the trail that climbs out of this area and back toward the cars! Meet in the northwest corner of the outside parking lot of Alliante Casino for an 8:00 AM departure. Other meeting locations include: Red Rock Casino @ 7:15 AM and the Valley of Fire Visitor Center @ 8:45 AM. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell

Tuesday, January 28, First Creek Canyon Extended: Moderate, Class 2 scrambling, 8 AM - It's been a while since I've journeyed back in there where the scenery is great. It begins from the First Creek Trailhead off on Hwy 159 and follows an old road which soon becomes a trail when we get to a few ponderosa pines. The route continues beyond and becomes more primitive as we pass the climber walls. Some bushwhacking is then required to cross the canyon creek bed to follow another rocky trail where we'll be required to do a bit of Class II scrambling as we make our way to First Creek Spring. Here we'll have our break. Meet the coordinator by 8 AM at the trailhead, which is located on your right on 159 some 2 miles south of the Red Rock Scenic Loop Exit. Look for the sign. Coordinator- David Hardy

Wednesday, January 29th, Anniversary Narrows, Moderate, 5miles, 500ft, moderate scrambling, 8am. Now that the mining property troubles have abated let’s hike this wonderful canyon again. We will need high clearance vehicles to get across Calliville wash to make this a 5 mile moderate hike like we used to do fairly regularly. We will leave from the Albertsons at Lk Mead & Hollywood at 8 am and stop at mm4 on Northshore Rd. for any southside hikers. Coordinator – John Ward

Thursday, January 30th, La Madre Springs & Cabin - Moderate/Moderately Strenuous, 5 miles, 1400 feet elevation gain, 8:00 AM - It has been a while since I have ventured up to the cabin above the La Madre Springs. Let's do it! The trailhead is at Willow Springs where we will head up Rocky Gap Road to the La Madre turnoff. We'll pass the springs where the road turns into a trail that parallels a small stream. After that, the trail may be difficult to find just as it was in Waterfall Canyon but we will get up to the old miner's cabin and take our break. Meet at Red Rock Casino for an 8:00 AM departure. Coordinator - Kay Blackwell

Friday, January 31, Rattlesnake Canyon And Beyond/O&B Exploratory: Moderately Strenuous, 6 plus miles, 1500 FT gain estimated, Class II-III, 8 AM. We’ll have two choices as we reach the falls area. First, we can bypass the falls to head straight up into a large canyon area that we have not explored before. Or we can continue up to, then beyond the falls to an interesting high walled canyon area from where the stream flows. In both cases, there is a trail starting up into each of these areas. Wear gloves, expect to do some bushwhacking. Depart the Red Rock Casino by 8 AM or meet at the Willow Springs TH/Picnic Area by 8:40 AM. Coordinator- David Gray
