So I am headed back up there! As noted, it's basically the traditional route up through Deer Springs, but as we near the top of the ridge trail, instead of going left, we'll turn right onto the route that curves back up and around taking us into a rather large canyon/bluff area with lots of pines well above (watershed area) the spring. Here the trail ends; it's not far to the top/ridgeline. Above us there's lots of blue sky. We'll bushwhack a bit to top that ridgeline, then head out onto some overlooks situated in and around the cliffs, bluffs, ridgeline on the "south wall" exposure of Mummy Mountain. We'll have great views of MT Charleston, Kyle Canyon, and the top of Mummy's Toe. It's break time now. Heading back, we'll drop down onto the Mummy Springs Trail, head over to Raintree, then return to the cars via the North Loop Trail, Wild Horse Ridge. Sunday, August 14th, South Loop Area Snow Chutes/Manhole Overlook/Exploratory- Strenuous, moderately strenuous, estimate 5-7 miles on the initial effort, 1500 FT plus gain, 8 AM- Our route starts in earnest from the Manhole Cover that is located at the end of the Old Forest Road that begins just off from where you climb to Cathedral Rock Peak. Now this landmark is known as it's also the turnoff point for Kay's Upper Kyle Canyon Overlook (aka Hidden Falls Overlook) trek. Here, you go off to the right for her route. For us, we'll take the trail on the left! Note- I explored this a bit with fellow hiker Steven Weber in July. We found that the trail heads up on a scree covered ridge of a small wash for a bit, then turns into the trees just below the large landmark rock outcropping that I've named, Manhole Overlook. From this area we'll have a good view, perspective of the canyon/chutes that surrounds us with the very ridges off to our south, the top of the South Loop Ridge/Trail area. This watershed feeds Little Falls. It's a big area! TH- Cathedral Rock/South Loop Trailhead/parking lot- Step off at 8 AM- Coordinator- David Gray
