Tuesday, August 2nd, Hummingbird Gulch Overlook via The Cliffs & Bluffs Above Robbers Roost/Exploratory- This is Canyon #3 and we'll turn up along the rim to head up to the Overlook area that is just above the spring. It's where we usually stop for a break after the difficult scrambling above the pour over in the gulch's main canyon below. The terrain will dictate the success of our efforts as we retrace out steps of the initial exploratory trek off of the start of the North Loop Trail. We're coming back to refine our route, explore. Strenuous in places, moderately strenuous, possibly Class II & III scrambling expected. Thursday, August 4th, Blue Diamond Canyon #1- Moderate, 4 miles, 1000 FT gain, 5:45 AM- It's an early morning hike up into Blue Diamond Hill. We will scramble up the narrows and return the same way which will keep us in the shade the entire time. Meet 5:45 at Hwy. 159 and Arroyo Street which is the back way into Blue Diamond. Friday, August 5th, Hummingbird Gulch CCW Loop- This is Kay's route from 2019. Strenuous, moderately strenuous, 6.5 miles, 2100 FT, gain, 7 AM- We'll start this from Robbers Roost TH taking the Old Deer Creek Road Trail up to the North Loop, then head over to our goal, Fletcher Peak. We'll return via Hummingbird Gulch. Just remember, down is always harder. Be at the trailhead by 7 AM- RSVP- Coordinator- David Gray and John Hammel-
Foxtail Camp Loop - Easy Moderate, 3 miles; 600' gain; 7:30am - This is an easier loop at the Foxtail Camp than the Pioneer Rock Loop. We will begin the loop with the climb up to the Forest Road Ridge. (We'll take it slow.) At the end of the Forest Road, we climb up through the old Girl Scouts' Foxtail Camp and turn onto the Pioneer Camp Road where we will stop at the picnic table for our break. Next, I found a nice trail to return down to the mess hall to take the road back to the picnic area and cars. Sunday, August 7th, Blue Diamond Canyon #5A- Moderate, 5 miles, and 500 FT gain, 6 AM- This route begins from the parking lot area at Wheeler Springs just north of Blue Diamond. The canyon cuts deep into the Blue Diamond Hill with high walls and considerable scrambling. A large fill supporting a road high above marks the end of the canyon. We'll meet at Wheeler Spring parking area by 6 AM. Directions- If coming from Red Rock, this parking lot is on the right just after a large brown sign noting that you shouldn't feed the burros. Thursday, August 11th, Blue Diamond Ridges- This moderate early morning hike on the hill across from Red Rock Canyon will cover a distance up to 7 miles starting from the Cowboy Stables parking lot along Highway159. How much the group does will be determined by the temperature increases during the morning. If it stays somewhat cool the destination will be the Las Vegas Overlook. All the uphill is with no sun. Thursday, August 11th- Raintree- It's simple, an out and back effort up the North Loop to the Raintree with a brief meditation to celebrate life and and the sounds of nature in the presence of our most treasured Bristlecone. The hike will be moderately strenuous, 6 miles with an elevation gain of 1800 at a moderate pace. If we get spread out, we will regroup at the High Point Corner on the North Loop. Friday, August 12th, Showgirl to Stepladder Extended- Moderately strenuous, 8 plus miles, loss of 1700 FT, 8 AM- This will be a fun trek that takes us through the heart of the lower Deer Creek area starting at the Showgirl TH. We’ll initially head counterclockwise down the Gypsy Trail onto Old Deer Creek Road Trail over to Robbers Roost. From there we’ll hike the Pixie and Hike A Bike Trails, which will take us onto the Trough Trail, the new extended route to Telephone Canyon Road. Here we turn up this road a bit to begin the final leg of the hike on the following paths: Upper Cowboy Washington, Old Deer Creek Road, and finally, Stepladder. The shuttle vehicle will be parked at the Stepladder or Traffic Circle TH. Meet-up- Juniper TH off of Angel Peak Road, which is off of Deer Creek Road. The turnoff is just before the North Loop TH. Sunday, August 14th, South Loop Area Snow Chutes/Manhole Overlook/Exploratory- Strenuous, moderately strenuous, estimate 5-7 miles on the initial effort, 1500 FT plus gain, 8 AM- Our route starts in earnest from the Manhole Cover that is located at the end of the Old Forest Road that begins just off from where you climb to Cathedral Rock Peak. Now this landmark is known as it's also the turnoff point for Kay's Upper Kyle Canyon Overlook (aka Hidden Falls Overlook) trek. Here, you go off to the right for her route. For us, we'll take the trail on the left! Note- I explored this a bit with fellow hiker Steven Weber in July. We found that the trail heads up on a scree covered ridge of a small wash for a bit, then turns into the trees just below the large landmark rock outcropping that I've named, Manhole Overlook. From this area we'll have a good view, perspective of the canyon/chutes that surrounds us with the very ridges off to our south, the top of the South Loop Ridge/Trail area. Sunday, August 14th, Ash Canyon/Calico Basin- Easy, 4 miles, 200 FT of elevation gain, 6 AM- This early hike will begin near Red Spring and will travel through red rock formations, ash and cottonwood trees, and a small creek. Tuesday, August 16th, Griffith Peak via South Loop Trail/MT Charleston- Moderately strenuous to strenuous, 10 miles, 3350 FT gain, 7:30 AM- Meet up at the South Loop/Cathedral Rock Trail parking lot off Kyle Canyon Road at 7:30 a.m. This trail climbs the south side of Kyle Canyon to the saddle. We then turn left to the peak. A steep final ascent with spectacular views at the summit. RSVP- Coordinator- John Hammel
Thursday, August 18th through Monday, August 22nd- Toiyabe Range Backpacking- Location- In the heart of central Nevada, including South Twin River and Arc Dome, the highest mountain in the Toiyabe Range, 13th in the state. Distance- About 4 miles the first day, around 5 on the next, some steep hiking with packs. Day hike to top of Arc Dome, 11,770 FT. Part of the hike may require wading in this small river. Very nice aspen forest, impressive deep canyon, plus waterfalls and cascades. Mostly trail hiking, but the upper part of this trip will be exploratory with day packs. Sunday, August 21st- 4.25-Mile Overlook, North Loop Trail/Kyle Canyon- Moderately strenuous, 8 miles, 2700 FT gain, 7:30 AM- Consider this traditional route as part of our conditioning and altitude training in preparation for a Mount Charleston trek in mid-September if the weather allows. We begin our route from Trail Canyon Trailhead. Views include 180 degrees of Kyle Canyon and nearby peaks. Meet the coordinator at the TCT TH by 7:30 AM. Coordinator- David Gray
Thursday, August 25th, Red Springs/Calico Basin- Most of the route for this moderate 4-mile out-and-back hike will be in the shade as the group will start from Red Springs and go around the south end of the Calico Hills as far as Calico II Overlook utilizing the canyon between the sandstone hills and the scenic drive as much as possible. The coordinator will be at Red Springs Picnic Area for a 6 AM start of the hike. If the gate of the picnic area is not open that early there is plenty of parking just outside along the road. Friday, August 26th, Bonanza Peak/Cold Creek- Strenuous to moderately strenuous, 8 miles, 3,000 FT of elevation gain, 7 AM- We will meet up at 7 AM at the Smith's parking lot off of W. Skye Canyon Park Dr. The plan is to take 2 high clearance vehicles, 8 people maximum, over to Cold Creek Road off of Route 95 North. Sunday, August 28th, Red Canyon/Cottonwood Valley- Moderate, 4 miles, 800 FT gain, 5:45 AM- Meet at the Chevron gas station on 159/160 at 5:45 AM where we will car pool and drive to the Cottonwood Valley and park at the trailhead for Badger Pass. This moderate hike will take us up Red Canyon and return the same way and it should be shady most of the time.
