June 2021 Hike Schedule

 Tuesday, June 1st, Fletcher Peak (10,319) Loop via The Backdoor-  Strenuous- 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of 2300 FT with some Class II here and there. This has been called the backdoor approach as we start from the Deer Creek area, make the sharp climb up Deer Creek Trail to Mummy Spring. Then we traverse over to Raintree for a brief break, then "go for the gold" at the pinnacle. We'll take our main break here, enjoy the day. We'll bring it home via the North Loop Trail and Wild Horse Ridge. Our initial meet-up will be at Traffic Circle Trailhead across from the Spring Mountains Visitor Center, Kyle Canyon Road. Directions at the Traffic Circle- (Go/Yield right, then make an immediate right onto the service road up to the vaulted toilets.) Be there by 8 AM- Google your drive time using the Visitor Center location. No limit/No RSVP- Coordinator- David Gray


Wednesday, June 2nd,  First Overlook from Echo, OB- M/MS, 6 miles, 1800 feet of gain, 8:00 AM -  We begin at Echo Trailhead and hike over to the South Loop Trail. The trail now begins a steady climb through the Aspen. After crossing the creek area, the trail climbs up about 10 or so switchbacks to the overlook. After a nice break, we hike back to the cars. My pace will be slow and steady with stops as needed. Carpoolers can meet at the Rancho Santa Fe at 7:15AM or the Echo trailhead at 8:00AM. No RSVP or Limit. Coordinator -Lettie Gutierrez

Saturday, June 5th, Upper Showgirl Loop - Easy Moderate; 5 miles; 600' elevation gain; 8:30am - We will meet at the Santa Fe Casino, choose carpools, then drive up Kyle Canyon Road to Deer Creek Road (SR-158). The hike begins at the Juniper Trailhead down the road from the Hilltop Campground. The route winds around among the trees with views of Mummy's Nose and Angel Peak. No RSVP needed. Sunday, June 6th, Griffith Peak/Snow Free- Moderately Strenuous, 9.5 miles, 3300 FT gain, 7:30 AM-  We'll take the standard route through a beautiful area to  Southern Nevada's third highest peak. Moderate pace. TH- Cathedral Rock/South Loop Trail/Kyle Canyon- We'll step off at 7:30- AM- No Limit/No RSVP- Coordinator- David Gray- 


Monday, June 7th-


Tuesday, June 8th, Big Falls Overlook O&B- Strenuous, 9 miles, 2900 FT gain - It's training to get us up to MT Charleston Peak this summer via the North Loop Trail plus great views of spring time in the mountains. TH- Trail Canyon Trail/Kyle Canyon. Google your drive time using the time/distance to the MT Charleston Lodge. Key Point- You turn off of Kyle Canyon Road onto Echo Road just before the sharp curve across the wash bridge leading up to the lodge. Follow the curve of Echo Road to the entrance of the parking lot by the vaulted toilets. We step off at 8 AM- No limit/No RSVP- Coordinator- David Gray

Saturday, June 12th, Old Mill / Lee Meadows Loop - Easy; 4 miles; 600' elevation gain; 8:30am - Meet at the Santa Fe Casino for an 8:30am departure. The hike begins at Lee Meadows and travels up to an old house foundation, the old mill, the anemometer, and back down to the meadows via Lower Bristlecone Trail. No RSVP needed. Tuesday, June 15th,  Hummingbird Gulch to Raintree/Shuttle- Moderately Strenuous to Strenuous, 5.0 miles, 1600 FT gain, Class III scrambling at times, 8:00 AM. These are two of our favorite spots in our archives of hikes. Our initial meet-up will be at Traffic Circle Trailhead across from the Spring Mountains Visitor Center, Kyle Canyon Road. Directions at the Traffic Circle- (Go/Yield right, then make an immediate right onto the service road up to the vaulted toilets.) From there we'll carpool to the trailhead along Deer Creek Road. Shuttle required- To get our drivers back to the cars so that they can pick the rest of us up, we'll leave a vehicle at the North Loop Trailhead. Be there by 8 AM-  No limits/No RSVP required- Coordinator- David Gray 


Wednesday, June 16th, Cockscomb Ridge OB - Moderate/Moderately Strenuous, 5 miles, 1800 feet of gain, 8:00 AM - Our day begins at Trail Canyon trailhead. Trail Canyon makes it way up through the Aspen and Pine trees and it is a steady uphill climb up to the saddle, 1400 feet of gain. After a short break, the hike continues along the ridge where there is some exposure on the spine. Our destination is the base of Cockscomb Peak. After a break, we retrace our steps back to the car. My pace will be slow and steady with pauses as needed. Carpoolers meet at the Rancho Santa Fe at 7:15AM or drive to Trail Canyon at 8:00AM. No RSVP. Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez 


Thursday, June 17th- 


Friday, June 18th, Showgirl to Stepladder Extended/Shuttle- Moderately Strenuous, 8 plus miles, loss of 1700 FT, 8AM. This will be a fun trek that takes us through the heart of the Lower Deer Creek area starting at the Showgirl/Juniper Trailhead. We’ll initially head counterclockwise down the Gypsy Trail onto Old Deer Creek Road Trail over to Robbers Roost. From there we’ll hike the Pixie and Hike A Bike Trails, which will take us onto the Trough Trail, the new extended route to Telephone Canyon Road. Here we turn up this road a bit to begin the final leg of the hike on the following paths: Upper Cowboy Washington, Old Deer Creek Road, and finally, Stepladder. The shuttle vehicle will be parked at the Stepladder or Traffic Circle Trailhead. Our initial meet-up point will be at the Traffic Circle/Stepladder Trailheads. At 8 AM we'll caravan up the Deer Creek Road to the Juniper Trailhead which is off of Angel Peak Road. No limit/No RSVP- Coordinator- David Gray


Friday thru Thursday, June 18th to the 24th- Escalante River Backpack Excursion/Utah- This trip will be in the narrow canyons of Harris Wash, Escalante River, Neon Canyon, Choprock Canyon, and more, covering about 37 miles round trip with the packs; additional hiking with day packs. Expect a lot of wading with this moderately strenuous backpack hike. We will fill out a permit at the trailhead. Saturday, June 19th, Macks Canyon Road - Easy Moderate; 4.5 miles; 800' elevation gain; 8:30am - Meet at the Santa Fe Casino for an 8:30am departure. The hike begins at the Sawmill Trailhead where we will make our way up to Macks Canyon Road. The turnaround point on the dirt road is a campground on the Sisters Spur Road. No RSVP needed. Tuesday, June 22nd, Trail Canyon / Upper Fletcher Canyon via TCT/Shuttle- Trail Canyon is a difficult climb for 2.15 miles gaining over 1500 elevation feet. We will climb at a slow and steady pace to adjust to the altitude. At the Junction with the North Loop Trail, we will start back like we’re going over to Raintree, but in within 30 yards, we begin dropping down a somewhat steep faint game trail that leads into the beauty of Upper Fletcher Canyon and the flowing spring. It’s a challenging descent of 2300’ through a wash surrounded by forest and limestone cliffs, bluffs, pour overs, and slots. Our goal is the Rabbit Hole so that we can complete the route via the Lower Section of Fletcher. Distance- Less than 6 miles, 1600’ of elevation gain vs the 2300’ of elevation loss. Meet-up/TH- Traffic Circle TH across from the visitor's center by 8 AM.  Directions at the Traffic Circle- (Go/Yield right, then make an immediate right onto the service road up to the vaulted toilets.) Wednesday, June 23rd, Cave Springs OB - Moderate/Moderately Strenuous, 5.5 miles, 1700+ feet of gain - This hike starts at Trail Canyon and steadily climbs up 2 miles to the saddle where the North Loop trail intersects. After a brief pause, we hike up the North Loop to our destination, Cave Springs. After our break, it’s back to the cars. My pace will be slow and steady with pauses as needed. Carpoolers can meet at the Rancho Santa Fe at 7:15AM. No RSVP. Coordinator - Lettie Gutierrez

Saturday, June 26th, Little Falls - Easy; 2 miles; 800' elevation gain; 8: 30 am - Meet at the Santa Fe Casino for an 8:30 am departure. The hike begins at the Echo Trailhead. Expect a hike that is short in distance but long in elevation gain. We will go slow with several stops. Although the falls may be only trickling, it is a cool place to go in the summer. You may stay at the bottom of the slot or to get to the bottom of the falls, I will lead you up a small scramble through debris. Bring sticks and gloves for this part. No RSVP needed. Monday, June 28th-


Tuesday, June 29th, Brownstone Canyon O&B/Calico Basin- Strenuous, 7-8 miles, 850 FT elevation gain, Class 3 scrambling, 7AM. It will be the standard route starting up and over 5-Stop Hill, into Upper Gateway, then across the west  canyon wall of the Brownstone. Our goal, main break point will be the historic landmark pictograph wall site. The pace will be moderate with numerous breaks along the way. Meet-up- Kraft Mountain Trailhead parking lot. Step-off time- 7AM- No limit/No RSVP required- Coordinator- David Gray-
