November 2021 Hike List

Thursday, November 4th, Potosi Climbers Alcove- Strenuous, 5-6 miles, 8 AM-  We will hike into the deep Potosi Canyon #3 until we reach the strenuous climb up to Climber’s Alcove. The trail leaving the canyon bottom is very steep, may have some minor exposure. Elevation gain will be around 2000 FT. We will leave from the Chevron gas station at 159/160 by 8 AM. If we have HCV's or 4X4's, we can cut off over a mile along with elevation. RSVP- Limit of 15- Coordinator- David Hardy 


Sunday, November 7th, Spring Mountain Ranch Overlook- Moderate out and back- We drive up SR 60 just beyond Mountain Springs Summit and at the town's fire station we'll take the road to the right. If we have 4x4's we can go about a half mile further up. Following the trail about 4 miles takes us to the overlook. Along the way we are in the pinyon zone, the pine nuts should be ready to eat. It's an out and back trek. Meet the coordinator at the Chevron gas station at 159/160 7:30 AM. RSVP- Limit- 15- Coordinator- David Hardy 


Tuesday, November 9th, Brownstone Canyon Loop via Upper Gateway- Strenuous with 7.5 miles of Class II/III scrambling over challenging terrain that includes up 1850 FT of elevation gain, 8 AM. We'll begin the trek from Calico Basin, the Kraft Mountain (Gravel) Parking Lot TH heading up 5-Stop, then Upper Gateway. From the redstone, we veer left to enter up and through the Three-Sided Canyon to the Plateau above. Locate the two rock humps landmark, continue on to our left along the ridegline to the Crack. It's a hard climb down to the colorful pictographs, about a 1,000 years old. This is our break point. Then we'll head up again to cross the yellow sandstone in front of us, then drop back to the redstone and the Upper Gateway. Coordinator- David Gray- 


Friday, November 12th, Blue Diamond Tertiary Ridge- This 6.5 mile moderate loop hike begins in the community of Blue Diamond. The group will make their way up the Tertiary Ridge behind the community following a trail along the top that leads toward Bonnie Springs. After dropping back to the valley floor near the western end of the ridge, the route loops to the north and returns to Blue Diamond. Red Rock Casino will be used for the early meeting point, with a departure at 7:35 AM, and those participants should proceed to Blue Diamond. After crossing the wash bridge on the main entrance into the community there will be a parking area next to the county park on the left. Step off time is 8 AM. The coordinator will be at this location. South side participants may drive directly to Blue Diamond. RSVP- Limit of 15 hikers- Coordinator- David Hardy


Saturday, November 13th, Rattlesnake Canyon/Red Rock Canyon- Moderately strenuous, 4 miles, all Class II/III, 8 AM- This out and back route is located at the south side of the Willow Springs Parking Lot. We scramble until we top the 30 to 40-foot waterfall, terrace area which is somewhat at the base of the ridge leading to the sandstone North Peak on the escarpment, north wall of Icebox Canyon. Meet the coordinator at the Willow Springs Trailhead/Picnic Area by 8 AM. Allow 40 minutes from the fee booth to reach the TH by 8 AM. Coordinator- David Gray 


Sunday, November 14th, Back Hills Lawn Mower Route- Moderate, distance of 6 miles, 600 FT total elevation gain- Meet-up- It's the large parking area on the south side of Hwy 160 about 2 miles west of the Chevron gas station at 159/160. The route will follow the Landmine Trail and then onto the Rubber Ducky Trail. We will check the ducky tree for rubber ducks. A little beyond we connect with the Old Spanish Trail for a short distance followed by picking up the Lawn Mower Trail. We will follow this over a ridge, switchbacking down into a canyon, then we head for the cars. This is to be a moderate paced hike. We leave from the Chevron gas station on 159/160 at 8 AM- RSVP- Limit- 15- Coordinator- David Hardy   


Tuesday, November 16th, Turtlehead Peak O&B/Red Rock Canyon- Strenuous/Moderately strenuous- 5 miles up/down, some exposure, 8 AM- This is the traditional route heading up on the right side, which offers more rugged terrain with scrambling over loose rock, up through small rocky washes and bluffs. Meet-up- Red Rock Canyon's Sandstone Quarry by 8 AM. Total elevation is some 1900 FT. Pace will be determined by the terrain. Coordinator- David Gray 


Wednesday, November 17th, Potato Knoll- Easy/Moderate, 5 miles, 600 FT- The partial loop hike will start from the gravel parking lot at the exit of Red Rock's Scenic Loop Drive on Highway 159. Climbing to the top of the 500-foot hill from the back involves some scrambling, but is optional, and we will be crossing Oak Creek several times. Our pace will be such to keep the group together. Depart the Red Rock Casino by 8:00 AM or be at the Scenic Loop exit parking lot for an 8:20 hike start. RSVP/Limit- 12- Coordinator- John Ward


Thursday thru Saturday/Sunday, November 18th - 20th/21st- Death Valley Camping- We will leave Las Vegas about 7 AM, arriving at Texas Spring Campground around 9. After setting up camp we will determine where our hike will be. The Golden Canyon Loop will be a good one for Day 1. Need a minimum of 6 people to sign up for this to go. Sunday, November 21st, Liberty Bell Arch- Moderate/Moderately strenuous, 5 miles, 1100FT of gain, 8 AM-  Trailhead is the White Rock Canyon lot at MM4 on US93 (it’s the first left after the new bridge). Hiking at a pace to keep everyone together. We go down the canyon thru some narrows then take the trail which passes an old mine and then the wonderful arch and then continue to our beautiful break spot overlooking the river, then it’s the same trail back to the cars. We will meet at the Railroad Pass Casino Travel Center(exit 15A on US93/95) for carpooling with an 8 AM departure and a hike start time at 8:30. RSVP/limit 15- Coordinator- John Ward


Tuesday, November 23rd, Calico Hills Loop via 5 Stop Hill/Calico Basin- Moderately strenuous, 8 miles, 1000’ gain, 7:30AM -This hike begins at the Red Spring TH/Picnic Area parking, hiking over 5-Stop Hill, up Gateway about 10 minutes then over to the Sandstone Quarry via Rattlesnake Trail. From there we follow the Grand Loop Trail/route past Calico #2 and #1 back to Red Spring. There will be some Class II/III scrambling here and there. Meet the Coordinator at Red Spring in Calico Basin at 7:30 AM. Coordinator- David Gray


Thursday, November 25th, Thanksgiving, Fern Canyon/Pine Creek/Red Rock Canyon- This moderately strenuous 5.5 mile hike will whet our appetite for that Thanksgiving turkey! Lot of Class II/III scrambling and pools of clear, clean water running through this colorful boulder canyon. Elevation gain of 900 FT. Trailhead- Pine Creek Trailhead/Red Rock Canyon NCA-  Moderate pace. We step off at 8 AM- Be through the fee booths by 7:10 AM or so so that you have time to get over to the trailhead, get that parking spot. Coordinator- David Gray


Friday, November 26th, Guardian Angel Trail- Moderately strenuous, distance of 5 miles, 1000 FT, 8 AM- Starting from Red Spring we will take the Guardian Angel Trail up a steep route to a pass, then down the other side with lots of scrambling. Be sure to look for the Guardian Angel. When we reach the trail below Calico #2, we swing around below Calico #1, and back to Red Spring. Meet at the Red Spring TH/parking lot at 8 AM. Sunday, November 28th, Hamblin MT/Lake Mead- Moderately strenuous, 7-mile loop, 1400 FT gain, 8 AM- It's an extinct volcano in an area of volcanic rock. It offers great views of Lake Mead area, the Pinto Valley, Anniversary Mine, the redstone area to the east, the Muddy Mountains to the north, as well as, into Arizona. Our route follows a series of washes, ridges, and drainages to the base of the peak. The climb up steepens as you approach the peak (break point), which is jagged and has some exposure. On return we'll drop into Rainbow Canyon. Meet in the parking lot area at the back of the CVS store in the Albertson’s shopping center off of Lake Mead Blvd at Hollywood by 8 AM. From there we'll caravan out to Mile Marker 18.2 Trailhead off of Northshore Road. Coordinator- David Gray  


Tuesday, November 30th, Foundation Hill/Peak/Exploratory- Strenuous/Moderately strenuous, about 4 miles, elevation gain of 500 FT plus, for sure a lot of Class II/III scrambling with some limited exposure at times, 8 AM- Bring gloves- This begins a series of exploratory treks to take on the challenges of this dark redstone mountain that ties the Calico Hills together in the Calico Basin. (Unofficial Name- One website called it Foundation Peak for the abandoned home foundation at the base of it. Long time hiker/scrambler Steve Allen noted the name Foundation Hill.) Meet at the Kraft Mountain parking lot off of Sandstone Drive in Calico Basin by 8 AM. Coordinator- David Gray
